THE PARISH CHURCH OF

ST JAMES GARLICKHYTHE

Carol Service for The Friends of the City Churches

St James Garlickhythe

St James Garlickhythe is one of the more original Wren churches and has survived the Victorian restorers and two world wars remarkably well. Set beside a delightful garden, it suffers a little from the rush of traffic on Upper Thames Street, a problem it did not have when built, as it was sheltered in quieter side streets before the development of this part of the City’s road network.

The exterior is typical Wren, with one of his later, baroque-style steeples, which some writers have attributed to Hawksmoor. This is a matter of some debate. It has similarities to several of Francesco Borromini’s church steeples in Rome, with which Wren was familiar through a book of engravings by Giovanni Falda, a copy of which he was known to possess from as early as 1675 (when Hawksmoor was still a boy).

Known as Wren’s Lantern, it is flooded with light, as Wren always intended, although this would have been even more pronounced before the east window was filled in and replaced with Andrew Geddes’ painting of the Ascension in the early 19th century.

The interior design of the church is one of Wren’s attempts to create elements of both central and longitudinal planning in a church, with the east-west axis interrupted by a clever breaking of the entablature back to the north and south walls to create the shape of a cross. It is Wren’s highest church interior.

There is much good woodcarving to be admired, though some of this came from the nearby St Michael Queenhythe when that church was demolished in the late 19th century.

The organ is also quite exceptional. Described in most books as being by Father Smith, it is now attributed to Johann Knoppell, who may have worked at one time for Smith and possibly used some parts from a Smith organ. The wood carvings on the case are superb and the instrument looks particularly impressive since its restoration by Noel Mander in 2007, with the help of a grant of £225,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £100,000 raised by the church itself.

Other items of particular interest include the splendid clock over the entrance, surmounted by the figure of St James of Compostela with his Bible in one hand and his staff in the other; the vestibule with its elegant double staircase; the delightful “egg and dart” pattern around the top of the entablature; and the little tables on either side of the altar. These are made from wood taken from the wreckage of the Marchioness pleasure boat, which sank nearby in the Thames in 1989, with the loss of 51 young people’s lives.

In order to comply with the requirements of the , based upon the current restrictions implemented by the government concerning public events in churches, it is mandatory for all members of the congregation to wear a face covering and we must also ask them not to join in with the singing of the music

As is the custom there will be a collection, the proceeds of which will go into the charitable funds of St James Garlickhythe and the Friends of the City Churches. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there are special arrangements this year.

As you leave the church there will be a prominent table at the back with a large and lovely shell collection bowl on it for your donations. This includes Gift Aid envelopes. Gift Aid does make a huge difference to charities and we are most grateful.

If you are a UK resident taxpayer, then please do complete a yellow Gift Aid envelope. There will also be a Trustee by the table with a card reader payment handset if you would like to use this method for your donation.

The Bidding Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson:

The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 9, Verses 2 - 4 and Verses 6 – 7

Read by Tony Zotti

Watcher, The Friends of the City Churches

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The Second Lesson: The Gospel according to St Luke, Chapter 1, Verses 26 – 35, 37 & 38 Read by David Beard Member, The Friends of the City Churches

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David: and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, "Hail thou that are highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever: and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. For with God nothing shall be impossible.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

The Third Lesson: The Gospel according to St Matthew, Chapter 1, Verses 18 - 25 Read by Vanessa Morris Watcher, The Friends of the City Churches

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The Fourth Lesson: The Gospel according to St Luke, Chapter 2, Verses 1 ─ 7 Read by Ben Furnival

Member, The Friends of the City Churches

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was Governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Fifth Lesson: The Gospel according to St Luke, Chapter 2, Verses 8 ─ 16 Read by Jan Fielden Member, The Friends of the City Churches

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

The Sixth Lesson: The Gospel according to St Matthew, Chapter 2, Verses 1 ─ 12 Read by Alan McLean Member, The Friends of the City Churches

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Please stand for the Seventh Lesson

The Seventh Lesson The Gospel according to St John, Chapter 1, Verses 1 to 14 read by Father Timothy Handley

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Blessing

So may Christ, whose glory fills the skies, fill you with his light, scatter the darkness from your path, gladden your eyes, warm your heart, and guide your feet into the way of peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen

The Friends of the City Churches The Friends of the City Churches is a charity dedicated to the care and appreciation of the historic churches of the City of London. Through volunteering, publications and events, the Friends celebrate the rich spiritual, social and historical value of the remarkable medieval, Wren and Georgian churches within the ancient Square Mile. The Friends aim to: • Bring together the many interesting people who love and value the City churches • Assist in the conservation and repair of these historic buildings through small grants and services • Enrich our members’ knowledge through events including walks, talks, visits and tours • Explore the heritage and the modern life of the churches in our quarterly magazine, Skyline • Welcome weekday visitors and worshippers to the churches through the work of our own volunteer Church Watchers Our Church Watching scheme was launched in 1995 – when the City churches were much less accessible than they are today – to receive visitors and worshippers, and encourage more churches to open during the working day. Since then, over 300 volunteers have helped to keep church doors open over the years; before the temporary suspension of the scheme in March 2020, FCC Church Watchers were welcoming visitors to some twenty churches in a typical week. The Friends’ Small Grants Programme offers grants of up to £5000 to churches within the City of London for small-scale repair or improvement projects in or outside the building. Recent examples include repairs to door furniture and roof at , replacement of a damaged poor box at St Benet Paul’s Wharf, repairs to a 17th century bench at , professional movers to relocate a safe at St Martin Ludgate and a grant towards enhanced security equipment at . The FCC also has a designated fund for repairs to textiles such as vestments, banners, kneelers, frontals, falls and fair linen. The Friends’ publications include A Visitor’s Guide to the City of London Churches and Sword Rests of the City, both by City Guide and FCC Trustee Tony Tucker, as well as a map of the churches which is distributed throughout the City, and the monthly City Events listing guide to services, concerts, lectures, exhibitions and performances in the churches.
