Term Three years. Lay Missioner-Evangelist Job Spec 1 ST ANDREW BY THE WARDROBE Supporting Detail Background St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe is a parish church in the City of London. It encompasses the area to the south of St Paul’s Cathedral and north of the river Thames. Two underground & mainline stations are in the parish (Blackfriars & City Thameslink) giving massive throughput of City workers (c. 25 million entries & exits in a year). This is expected to increase yet further as Crossrail comes online. The parish contains the northern end of the Millennium Bridge, which is now the largest entry point into the City (overtaking St Paul’s underground station). In the north of the parish, the Carter Lane / Ludgate Hill area is seeing considerable development as a “go to” destination for night-time socialising, with new bars, restaurants and a five-star hotel. -

Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral
Extract from: Babylonian London, Nimrod, and the Secret War Against God by Jeremy James, 2014. Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral Since London is a Solar City – with St Paul's Cathedral representing the "sun" – we should expect to find evidence of solar rays , the symbolic use of Asherim to depict the radiant, life-sustaining power of the sun. Such a feature would seem to be required by the Babylonian worldview, where Asherim are conceived as conduits of hidden power, visible portals through which the gods radiate their "beneficent" energies into the universe. The spires and towers of 46 churches are aligned with the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, creating 23 "solar rays". I was already familiar with this idea from my research into the monuments of Dublin, where church steeples and other Asherim are aligned in radial fashion around the "sun," the huge modern obelisk known as the Millennium Spire. As it happens, a total of 23 "solar rays" pass through the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, based on the alignment of churches alone . Thus, in the diagram above, two churches sit on each line. If other types of Asherim are included – such as obelisks, monoliths, columns and cemetery chapels – the number is substantially greater. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Their foundation was made in the church of St Giles, close to Picot’s base in Cambridge castle and across the river from most of the developing town. According to the Barnwell chronicle, this foundation for six canons was made with the assistance and assent of both Remigius, bishop of Lincoln (died 8 May 1092), and Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury (nominated March 1093) (Liber memorandorum, I 4 p. 39). The date is given as 1092 (ib. I 18 p. 46). Anselm’s involvement was perhaps an enhancement by the chronicler. At the death soon afterwards of Picot and Hugolina, this inchoate establishment fell into the care of their son Robert, who was disgraced for plotting against King Henry; his forfeit possessions were given by the king to Pain Peverel (ib. -

Hobbes was outed as an athe- ist and discredited almost as soon as the work appeared. Subsequent criticism was seen to be the idle pursuit of a discredited text, an exer- cise upon which young militant churchmen could cut their teeth, as William Warburton observed in the eighteenth century.2 We need to be aware, however, that this was a story that was largely the cre- ation of Hobbes’s intellectual opponents, writers with an interest in sidelining Leviathan from the mainstream of the history of ideas. -

Kevin J. Gardner is Associate Professor of English at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. A Betjeman scholar, he is the author of Betjeman and the Anglican Imagination (SPCK, 2010). He is also the editor of Faith and Doubt of John Betjeman: An anthology of his religious verse (Continuum, 2005) and Poems in the Porch: The radio poems of John Betjeman (Continuum, 2008). ISSN 0968–9761 1 Sister Fanny (1836–1907) Pioneer Church of England deaconess in Bedford* Fanny Elizabeth Eagles was born in Bedford on 10 December 1836 at the family home in Harpur Place1 the youngest of three children. Her father was Ezra Eagles (1803–1865),2 solicitor, Coroner and Clerk of the Peace for the County, and his wife, Elizabeth Halfhead (1804–1866).3 Such was Fanny’s delicate state of health as an infant, she was baptised privately, and afterwards ‘received into the church’ at St Peter’s. Fanny received her first communion at her confirmation in 1852 at Holy Trinity Church, Bedford.4 She is said to have played the organ there.
