Este crecimiento se ha visto reflejado en la aparición de un importante número de trabajos, monografías y libros en las más diversas disciplinas, desde tratamien- tos sistemáticos y filogenéticos, hasta análisis de faunas regionales, ecología de comunida- des, estudios moleculares, fisiológicos y comportamentales, entre otros. A éstos se suma la creación y consolidación de grupos regionales de investigación y de sus sociedades, como la Sociedad Argentina para el Estudio de los Mamíferos (SAREM), Sociedade Brasileira de Mastozoologia (SBMz), Asociación Mexicana de Mastozoología (AMAC), Asociación Venezolana para el Estudio de los Mamíferos (ASOVEM), la reciente Asociación Bolivia- na de Investigadores sobre Mamíferos (ABIMA), revistas científicas como Mastozoología Neotropical, Chiroptera Neotropical y la creciente interacción e integración entre éstas y la comunidad científica internacional. La elaboración de una “Lista formal de Especies” ha sido un anhelo de la SAREM, casi contemporáneo a su nacimiento en 1983. Esta Sociedad ha realizado múltiples reuniones científicas en las que se han expuesto los resultados de diversas líneas de investigación nacional, y siempre ha estado en el “aire” la intención de hacer realidad una publicación “global” impulsada por ella misma. Con el transcurrir del tiempo, la intensa vida académica de sus miembros, los resultados de sus proyectos, la descripción de nuevas especies, nuevos registros de distribución, mayores datos sobre historia natural y otros estudios, han generado una voluminosa información, que estimábamos importante volcar en una obra de la naturaleza de este libro, con la valiosa cooperación de los especialistas de los distintos taxa. Los mamíferos de Argentina: sistemática y distribución tomó su impulso definitivo gra- cias a conversaciones mantenidas entre los editores quienes, en noviembre de 2002, duran- te las Jornadas Argentinas de Mastozoología en Mar del Plata, concretaron el acuerdo de convocar a diversos autores para dar inicio al proyecto. Esto se hizo efectivo en abril de 2003, cuando la comisión directiva de SAREM estaba a cargo de Noemí Gardenal y de Carlos Borghi. Desde entonces se desarrolló el proceso de discusiones e intercambios de ideas para concretar la lista de mamíferos de la Argentina que se ofrece en este trabajo. El objetivo original de la obra fue poner a disposición de la comunidad científica, el estado actual del conocimiento de los mamíferos de Argentina, desde la óptica y conoci- miento de los especialistas nacionales, quienes debían resumir la información de las espe- cies reconocidas hasta el momento, la taxonomía que debe utilizarse y las distribuciones de cada una. Este trabajo fue pensado para servir de base conceptual actualizada para futuras investigaciones y para proyectos de investigadores y jóvenes que deseen desarrollar sus estudios de tesis o becas. La meta principal del plan fue cumplida con algunas variantes respecto del proyecto original, ya que los especialistas invitados eligieron a colaboradores que consideraron ade- cuados. Así la lista de autores se amplió a expertos de otros países, vinculados estrecha- mente al conocimiento de la situación de las especies de Argentina. De este modo se fue conformando la lista final de autores, en número mayor que la de los invitados inicialmen- te, lo que contribuyó al enriquecimiento de la información brindada para las especies. 8 Mamíferos de Argentina Los autores de cada capítulo han abreviado la información disponible sobre las especies reconocidas hasta el momento en Argentina, definiendo los nombres que deben utilizarse y las distribuciones actualizadas de cada una. Esto está respaldado en la experiencia con los grupos, el contacto permanente con la “problemática”, relevamientos en el país, además del conocimiento de citas bibliográficas locales poco difundidas, que contienen indiscuti- ble valor y cuya ignorancia puede inducir a erróneas conclusiones sobre la identidad de especies, biogeografía, evolución y otros aspectos. La obra reúne datos precisos y breves, ofreciendo información orientativa y la literatura imprescindible para cada especie. Este compendio de conocimientos no plantea una revi- sión sistemática de cada grupo, sino la expresión experta de los autores, quienes han actua- do con independencia de criterio y son responsables de las opiniones emitidas. Es nuestra aspiración que este volumen sirva de punto de partida y base sobre la cual proyectar el desarrollo de futuras investigaciones, tanto para investigadores como para estudiantes de postgrado interesados en los distintos aspectos

Montaldo Received: 23 July 2010 / Accepted: 15 July 2011 / Published online: 24 July 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract In this paper we summarize for the first time the effects of agriculture expansion and intensification on animal diversity in the Pampas of Argentina and discuss research needs for biodiversity conservation in the area. The Pampas experienced little human intervention until the last decades of the 19th century. Agriculture expanded quickly during the 20th century, transforming grasslands into cropland and pasture lands and converting the landscape into a mosaic of natural fragments, agricultural fields, and linear habitats. In the 1980s, agriculture intensification and replacement of cattle grazing- cropping systems by continuous cropping promoted a renewed homogenisation of the most productive areas. Birds and carnivores were more strongly affected than rodents and insects, but responses varied within groups: (a) the geographic ranges and/or abundances of many native species were reduced, including those of carnivores, herbivores, and specialist species (grassland-adapted birds and rodents, and probably specialized pollinators), sometimes leading to regional extinction (birds and large carnivores), (b) other native species were unaffected (birds) or benefited (bird, rodent and possibly generalist pollinator and crop-associated insect species), (c) novel species were introduced, thus increasing species richness of most groups (26% of non-rodent mammals, 11.1% of rodents, 6.2% of birds, 0.8% of pollinators).

HAFNER' Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 The native rodent fauna of the Galapagos Archipelago consists of seven species belonging to the generalized Neotropical rice rat (oryzomyine) stock of the family Cricetidae. These species comprise three rather distinct assemblages, each of which is varyingly accorded generic or subgeneric rank: (1) Oryzomys (sensu stricto), including 0. galapagoensis [known only from Isla San Cristobal] and 0. bauri [from Isla Santa Fe] ; (2) Nesoryzomys, including N. narboroughi [from Isla Fernandina], N. swarthi [from Isla Santiago], N. darwini [from Isla Santa Cruz] , and N. indefessus [from both Islas Santa Cruz and Baltra] ; and (3) Megalomys curioi [from Isla Santa Cruz]. Megalomys is only known from subfossil material and will not be treated here. Four of the remaining six species are now probably extinct as only 0. bauri and N. narboroughi are known cur- rently from viable populations. The time and pattern of radiation, and the phylogenetic relationships of Oryzomys and Nesoryzomys are assessed by karyological, biochemical, and anatomical investigations of the two extant species, and by multivariate morpho- metric analyses of existing museum specimens of all taxa. These data suggest the following: (a) Nesoryzomys is a very unique entity and should be recognized at the generic level; (b) there were at least two separate invasions of the islands with Nesoryzomys representing an early entrant followed considerably later by Oryzomys (s.s.); (c) both taxa of Oryzomys are quite recent immigrants and are probably derived from 0.

Opazo2 Received: 19 July 2019 / Accepted: 23 January 2020 © Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde 2020 Abstract We reviewed the alpha taxonomy of the genus Ctenomys Blainville, 1826 in southernmost South America, with emphasis on those nominal forms previously associated with C. magellanicus Bennett, 1836. We integrate distinct lines of evidence, including variation of mtDNA sequences, and the assessment of quantitative and qualitative traits of skins and skulls; when available, karyotypic data was also considered. Phylogenetic analysis of molecular markers shows low levels of divergence among specimens from southern South American mainland and the island of Tierra del Fuego (ca. 0.4%). This evidence plus the results of the multivariate analysis of metric data suggest that the nominal forms C. colburni J. A. Allen, 1903, C. fueginus Philippi, 1880, C. osgoodi J. A. Allen, 1905, C. m. dicki Osgood, 1943, and C. m. obscurus Texera, 1975 are subjective junior synonyms of C. magellanicus. In addition, we reviewed the status of C. fodax Thomas, 1910, a nominal form that have been alternatively considered as a valid species or related to C. magellanicus by previous researchers. Based on quantitative and qualitative morphological traits, we preliminarily regard C. fodax at the species level while citing it for the frst time to Chile. Texas, USA, E-mail: [email protected]. *Corresponding author Although the Galápagos Islands are recognized for their contribution to our understanding of evolutionary theory and have received the attention of scientists for over 185 years, our understanding of the native rodents there has been minimal relative to many other groups of organisms. Much of what we knew through most of the 20th century was based solely on species descriptions. Chromosome data has been limited to only Nesoryzomys narboroughi (2n = 32, FN (number of autosomal arms) = 50) and Aegialomys galapagoensis (2n = 56; FN = 58). We present the karyotypes of the only remaining extant species in the genus, N. swarthi (2n = 56; FN = 54) and N. fernandinae (2n = 44; FN = 54). Chromosomal banding reveals that extensive rearrangement has occurred within Nesoryzomys, including Robertsonian fusion and tandem fusion events but these alone cannot account for the diverse diploid numbers found within the genus. We propose that 1) N. swarthi repre- sents the ancestral karyotype for the genus, similar to A. galapagoensis, 2) N. swarthi and N. fernandinae share the same fundamental number, suggesting divergence by Robertsonian fusions, and 3) N. narboroughi has the most derived karyotype, based on banding morphology and low diploid number.

Revised checklist of mammals from Argentina. We present a revised checklist of the mammals of Argentina, incorporating recent taxonomical changes and new records of mammals for the country produced since the publication of a previous list in 2006.
