Studies in Avian Biology No. 19:272-280, 1999. SEASONAL MOVEMENTS AND CONSERVATION OF SEEDEATERS OF THE GENUS SPOROPHZIA IN SOUTH AMERICA Jose MARIA CARDOSO DA SILVA Abstract. Small seed-eating finches of the genus Sporophila, commonly called seedeaters, are among the most characteristic elements of South Americas’ grassland avifauna. Twenty-three species of Spa- rophila seedeaters were classified into three groups according to their seasonal movements. Fourteen species make long-distance movements between at least two major ecological regions in South Amer- ica, four species make intermediate to long-distance movements within a single ecological region, and five species make short-distance movements between adjacent habitats. The grasslands in the Cerrado region seem to be the most important wintering sites for most of the long-distance migrant Sporophila. Mapping the ranges of all threatened or near-threatened Sporophila species identified seven critical areas between southern coastal Colombia and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these seven areas would protect at least one population of 23 Sporophilu species. Mapping the ranges of all species and well-marked subspecies with restricted ranges (350,000 square kilometers or less) identified nine critical areas (five of which were also identified by mapping threatened or near-threatened species) between northern South America and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these nine areas would protect populations of 29 species or well-defined subspecies of Sporophila.The conservation of South American grasslands needs urgent action. The areas identified here are important grassland habitats that should be priority areas for organizations and agencies interested in grassland conservation. Welcome to the Ornithological Congress of the Americas! Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, from 8–11 August, 2017 Puerto Iguazú is located in the heart of the interior Atlantic Forest and is the portal to the Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area surrounding Puerto Iguazú, the province of Misiones and neighboring regions of Paraguay and Brazil offers many scenic attractions and natural areas such as Iguazú National Park, and provides unique opportunities for birdwatching. Over 500 species have been recorded, including many Atlantic Forest endemics like the Blue Manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata), the emblem of our congress. This is the first meeting collaboratively organized by the Association of Field Ornithologists, Sociedade Brasileira de Ornitologia and Aves Argentinas, and promises to be an outstanding professional experience for both students and researchers. Rivadavia 1917, CP C1033AAJ, Cdad. de Buenos Aires, Argentina http://japr.oxfordjournals.org/ Primary Audience: Flock Supervisors, Researchers, Veterinarians SUMMARY We experimentally assessed the effect of controlling vegetation height along farm perimeters at Sistema de Bibliotecas y Información Universidad Buenos Aires on August 6, 2015 on the abundance of rodents in 2 broiler poultry farms in central Argentina. We carried out an experimental design based on the before-after–control-impact method. After vegetation treat- ments, there was a significant decrease in rodent abundance at the perimeter of the farm with control of vegetation height because of the reduction of the Pampean grassland mouse Akodon azarae. In poultry houses, there was a significant decrease in rodent abundance on nonaffected farms because of the reduction of the commensal house mouse Mus musculus domesticus, pos- sibly because of a major collocation of rodenticide. Our results indicate that both the control of vegetation growth at the perimeters and the appropriate timing of rodenticide applications are effective measures for rodent control on broiler poultry farms when both control measures are applied simultaneously. We achieved effective rodent control through an understanding of the habitat use and population dynamics of the species involved and the characteristics of the area where the control program would be applied. -

The ecology of the jaguarundi is poorly known, so I reviewed the literature for all original data and remarks on jaguarundi observations, ecology, and behaviour, to synthesize what is known about the species. 2. Jaguarundis occupy and use a range of habitats with dense undergrowth from northern Mexico to central Argentina, but may be most abundant in seasonal dry, Atlantic, gallery, and mixed grassland/agricultural forest landscapes. 3. Jaguarundis are principally predators of small (sigmodontine) rodents, although other mammals, birds, and squamate reptiles are taken regularly. 4. The vast majority of jaguarundi camera-trap records occurred during daylight hours (0600 h-1800 h); jaguaurndis are also predominantly terrestrial, although they appear to be capable tree climbers. 5. Home range sizes for jaguarundis vary greatly, but most are .25 km2; females' territories may be much smaller than or similar in size to those of males. Males may concentrate movements in one area before shifting to another and, as with other felids, intersexual overlap in habitat use appears to be common. 6. Interference competition may be important in influencing the distribution and ecology of jaguarundis, although their diurnal habits may somewhat mitigate its effect. 7. Conflict between humans and jaguarundis over small livestock may be widespread among rural human communities and is likely to be underreported. -

Althought it has low population density and is remote from big cities, in the past it received well-deserved attention from researchers. This was probably due to the presence of many interesting species, among them some threatened, with taxonomic singularities, and/or endemism. -

Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species are brood parasites. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -
