Beth Ditto, Danny Brown, Black Lips and Satellite Stories added to the Flow Festival lineup Flow Festival's lineup just keeps getting bigger and better, with great additions slated all through May. The international press has heaped praise on Flow's programming, The Guardian, Esquire, The Independent, Vogue and The Telegraph, among others, mentioning the event in their lists of the best festivals around The amazing Beth Ditto is a true 2000s indie rock icon. The artist who sprang to prominence fronting Gossip is coming to Flow Festival as a solo act. Her debut album is coming out June 16th and she already made a splash with her first single Fire. The lead single's strong rock and blues vibe promises a whole new direction for the singer with the immaculate pipes. Ditto, who has thus far publicized only one other European show for the summer, will be performing in Finland for the first time. Flow Festival's stage will also host hip hop visionary and iconoclast Danny Brown. Known for his brilliant lyrics, the American rapper deals with personal and sometimes controversial themes, with a self-reflective and ironic touch. Atrocity Exhibition, Brown's latest album, is a painfully honest account of the artist's past and present. Critics loved it. US-based garage and indierock band Black Lips hits Flow as a part of their August tour of Europe. The group is infamous for its extreme shows, so this is sure to be one of the most memorable spectacles of the summer. The band has a history of working with top producers like Mark Ronson and Sean Lennon, and will release their new album Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? on Friday. Satellite Stories hail from Oulu, Finland and will be performing at Flow. The band will release a new album, Young Detectives, on May 12th. It will be the Scandinavian group’s first album released on a major record label. For their fourth album the band took matters into their own hands fully producing the material themselves. The album was mixed by Grammy award-winning engineer Fernando Lodeiro, known for his work with Vampire Weekend and Regina Spektor, among others. Acts announced for Flow Festival earlier include Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, The xx, Aphex Twin, London Grammar, Ryan Adams, Flume, Moderat, Young Thug, Goldfrapp, Death Grips, The Afghan Whigs, Sparks, Car Seat Headrest, Sampha and Angel Olsen. Flow Festival takes place in Helsinki's Suvilahti area on August 11–13 2017. To explore this field, we used an online quantitative survey (N= 761) followed up by 60 in-depth interviews, asking questions about musical preferences. Both the survey and the interviews disclose strongly gender-specific patterns of musical preference, the women preferring rock and alternative genres while the men tend to prefer pop and more commercial genres. While the sexual orientation of the musician is not very relevant to most participants, they do identify certain kinds of music that are strongly associated with lesbian and/or gay culture, often based on the play with codes of masculinity and femininity. Our findings confirm the popularity of certain types of music among Flemish lesbians and gay men, for whom it constitutes a shared source of identification, as it does across many Western countries. The qualitative data, in particular, allow us to better understand how such music plays a role in constituting and supporting lesbian and gay cultures and communities.

Rachel Gillett 2018 ABSTRACT This thesis undertakes a discursive analysis of the 1980s Gainesville punk subculture. As such, it performs a semiotic analysis and close reading to both the textual and visual discursive production of the scene, in the form of flyers, fanzines and liner notes, in order to, on the one hand, examine the ways in which such production was made to signify disorder, and, on the second hand, to illuminate the identity representations that ultimately constructed the Gainesville punk identity. For this reason, it employs the concept of intersectionality in an effort to consider identity representations of gender, race and class as interconnected and overlapping rather than isolated. Finally, it investigates the links between Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection and Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque, on the one hand, and the bodily performativity and corporeal manifestations of the Gainesville punk identity, on the other. Stevens Copyright by Lindsay Marie Bernhagen 2013 Abstract This dissertation centers on the role of musical experience in the production and maintenance of intimate, interpersonal relationships. Music acquires meaning in its ability to enable and amplify personal relationships among participants who share musical experience—not only through the semiotic decoding of lyrics and musical sounds that characterizes much music scholarship. Because there is scant language available for describing musical experience without reference to non-sonic elements such as lyrics, communal identity, or performers’ personae, this research relies on textual and ethnographic methods to examine how human experiences of musical sound are understood via racialized and gendered discourses of embodiment, intimacy, pleasure, and danger. Specifically, this project consists of textual analyses of music censorship discourse and ethnographic analyses of female musicians and listeners who seek out shared musical experiences in explicitly gendered contexts including a feminist punk movement, a girls’ rock music camp, and a long-standing women’s music festival. The introductory chapter offers an overview of the scholarship and theory that has influenced this project and sets up the theoretical framework I have developed through my own research. To establish the stakes of this project, the second chapter focuses on discourses of musical danger to reveal ii a persistent and anxious fascination with music’s relationship to the body and intimacy in the American imagination.
