Our mission is to raise awareness of its role and powers, of how political differences within it are played out and of how decisions taken by its Members affect the UK. These decisions have a huge impact on everyday life and it makes a big difference who decides on our behalf. Since journalists and the media in the UK play a key role in informing citizens about how the work of the European Parliament affects them, we hope that you will find this guide useful. 4 The European Parliament Information Office in the UK Our Role: We do our best to reach as broad a spectrum of society as we can – both face to face, online and in print. Our dedicated media team is there to answer your enquiries, direct you to information sources and arrange interviews with MEPs or the spokesperson's team. We organise media seminars on EU policy topics and thematic visits for journalists to Strasbourg and Brussels. More generally, our outreach includes lots of events here at Europe House, in our office in Edinburgh and nationwide, bringing stakeholders and the public together with their MEPs, academics and think-tanks. Journalists are welcome to attend these. The team builds links with trade bodies, professions, organisations, NGOs and anyone else interested in European affairs and the role of the EP. We work closely with teachers, educationalists and bodies involved in active citizenship to produce free and neutral resources about the EP and EU, and each year, we answer thousands of enquiries and distribute publications. We welcome interaction from the media and the public through our digital channels and are very active on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. Our comprehensive website provides you with information about what the EP does, how it works and who's who, including contact details of UK MEPs. 5 Press visits to the European Parliament Journalists are welcome to visit MEPs at work in committee or plenary sessions to keep citizens and taxpayers informed about the work of their elected representatives. We have a journalist visitors' programme which helps cover the cost of travel and accommodation for journalists visiting the Parliament when it meets in session in Brussels or Strasbourg.     European Union launches full scale war against internet privacy with #ChatControl (ePrivacy Derogation) On July 6, 2021, the European Union voted on the new “ChatControl” proposal. With a shocking number of 537 Members of the European Parliament voting in favor, 133 voting against and 20 abstentions, it was approved. The proposal was put forward under the banner of “emergency measures” and it allows internet companies to scan users’ private messages for material containing child sex abuse. This controversial decision is supposed to fix problems with the European Electronics Communications Code, which came into force last December. The so called “e-Privacy Interim Regulation” (2020/0259(COD)) requires online messenger and email service providers to automatically scan private message content in real time for suspicious text and image content using error-prone artificial intelligence. All cases identified by AI would be automatically disclosed to investigative authorities in the EU, without the individuals concerned knowing about it. This is intended to counter the spread of child pornography on the internet, at least that is the story behind it. But the EU’s plans for ChatControl have beenconfirmed to violate fundamental rights by a former judge of the European Court of Justice. The delegation of the European Pirate Party inserted in the Greens / EFA group has strongly condemned what it considers automated mass surveillance, which as they say means the end of privacy in digital correspondence. German Pirate Party Member of the European Parliament Patrick Breyer plans to take legal action against the regulation and is looking for victims of abuse who would file such a complainant.

    OPENING PANDORA’S BOX David Cameron’s Referendum Gamble on EU Membership Credit: The Economist. By Christina Hull Yale University Department of Political Science Adviser: Jolyon Howorth April 21, 2014 Abstract This essay examines the driving factors behind UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to call a referendum if the Conservative Party is re-elected in 2015. It addresses the persistence of Euroskepticism in the United Kingdom and the tendency of Euroskeptics to generate intra-party conflict that often has dire consequences for Prime Ministers. Through an analysis of the relative impact of political strategy, the power of the media, and British public opinion, the essay argues that addressing party management and electoral concerns has been the primary influence on David Cameron’s decision and contends that Cameron has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s box that could pave the way for a British exit from the European Union.     Dear President of the European Parliament, Dear President of the European Council, Dear President of the European Commission and Dear President of the French Republic, We all have a responsibility for the shared future of Europe. In this time of crisis, it is high time to re-evaluate some of the rules we have upheld till now and focus on the most important aspects of the European project, which will help us move forward. An unprecedented health crisis is currently affecting millions of people in Europe and tragically taking thousands of lives. However, this is not the end. The economic crisis will crush the hopes and dreams of generations of Europeans. We sincerely hope that we will all do whatever is in our power not to leave anyone behind. We firmly believe that the European Parliament needs to take on its responsibility and share the burden since it is the highest European directly elected body. We need to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. If we want the people to have confidence and trust in the European project, we need to show them that we are also ready to make concessions. Therefore, we would like to ask you to do everything in your power to change the treaties in order to have just a single seat of the Parliament in Brussels. This call has again gained a large majority of support in the 2018 Parliament discharge resolution adopted on 13 May 2020 and shall now be taken into account and acted upon. The financial and environmental costs of moving the Parliament are, especially in these times of digitally connected Europe, extremely high and hard to justify.
