Diese unabhängige Einheit bestand aus etwa 100 freiwilligen Griechen und ihre offizielle deutsche Bezeichnung lautete "Jagdkommando Schubert", wobei sie in einer Großzahl griechischer Quellen SH und Zeugenaussagen als "Schuberites" bezeichnet werden. BB Archeio-Marxisten on1_2309 Es handelt sich um einen Flügel der KKE, welcher sich in der Zwischenkriegszeit (1919-1934) von ihr abspaltete. BB Yad Vashem on1_2592 Institution für die Verewigung der Erinnerung an die Opfer und Helden des Holocausts, für die Ehrung von Nicht-Juden, die sich während des Holocausts für Juden einsetzten und für die Förderung der Holocaustforschung. Wurde 1953 in Jerusalem gegründet und stellt ein wichtiges Museum und Forschungszentrum des Holocaust dar, mit Aktivitäten, die Publikationen, Gedenkzeremonien, SH Bildungsseminare und die systematische Dokumentation von Belegen umfassen. Against prevailing views that such violence is either the product of impenetrable madness or a simple way to achieve strategic objectives, the book demonstrates that the logic of violence in civil war has much less to do with collective emotions, ideologies, cultures, or “greed and grievance” than currently believed. Stathis Kalyvas distinguishes between indis- criminate and selective violence and specifies a novel theory of selective violence: it is jointly produced by political actors seeking information and indi- vidual noncombatants trying to avoid the worst but also grabbing what oppor- tunities their predicament affords them. Violence is not a simple reflection of the optimal strategy of its users; its profoundly interactive character defeats sim- ple maximization logics while producing surprising outcomes, such as relative nonviolence in the “frontlines” of civil war. Civil war offers irresistible opportu- nities to those who are not naturally bloodthirsty and abhor direct involvement in violence. The manipulation of political organizations by local actors wishing to harm their rivals signals a process of privatization of political violence rather than the more commonly thought politicization of private life. Seen from this perspective, violence is a process taking place because of human aversion rather than a predisposition toward homicidal violence, which helps explain the para- dox of the explosion of violence in social contexts characterized by high levels of interpersonal contact, exchange, and even trust.

Gorgopotamos and After: Tom Barnes’ Gree Are, 42–45 Katherine Barnes Cecil dward (Tom) arnes took part in the famous sabotage operation of the Gorgopotamos Bridge in November 1942 as leader of the demolition party. Remaining in Greece after the attack, he rose to become one of two Area Commanders for the Allied Military Mission in Greece. The archive he left behind at his death in 1952 includes over 1000 photos, war diaries, letters and reports, mainly relating to his experiences in Greece. The user has requested enhancement of the downloaded file. “The other Parthenon” 307 “The other Parthenon”: Antiquity and National Memory at Makronisos Yannis Hamilakis Abstract Makronisos, the small, uninhabited island off the Attica coast, was the location of the most notorious concentration camp set up by the Greek government during the Civil War (1946–1949). It was a place of brutality, torture, and death, but its distinctive feature was its role as an indoctrination center for many thousands of political dissidents (mostly left-wing soldiers and citizens, but also ethnic and religious minorities) who, after they were “re- educated” in the national dogmas, were sent to fight against their ex-comrades. Classical antiquity was one of the main ideological foundations of this “experiment,” the audience for which was the whole of Greece and the international community. In the island, still known as “The New Parthenon,” the “redeemed” inmates were encouraged to build replicas of classical monu- ments, and the regime’s discourse emphasized the perceived incompatibility of the inmates’ “destiny” (as descendants of ancient Greeks) with left-wing ideologies. Paradoxically, many of the counter-discourses of the Makronisos inmates and their supporters also subscribed to the essentialist discourse of continuity and ancestral glory.
