  • BRIDGET BELL, Formerly CARROLL, Nee HOPKINS C1833-1915
BRIDGET BELL, formerly CARROLL, nee HOPKINS c1833-1915 TRACING THE LONG JOURNEY OF A YOUNG ORPHAN GIRL FROM COUNTY GALWAY, IRELAND TO BOURKE, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA AUGUST 10, 2018 KAYE SCHOFIELD [email protected] Introduction Bridget Hopkins was one of 230 Irish orphan girls who sailed into Sydney on the ship Digby on 4 April 1849, and one of more than 4,000 orphan girls who came from 118 different Irish workhouses to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide under the Earl Grey Famine Orphan Scheme 1848-1850. She was my maternal great-great-grandmother. While the broad arc of her long and eventful life had been documented, information was quite fragmented, details were scant and their accuracy uncertain. This story reflects my efforts to fill in some details and my continuing interest in understanding the historical context of my family’s history. I had also hoped to find Bridget’s own voice, but she has remained silent throughout. This story builds on and incorporates the efforts of many others who have been researching the Hopkins-Carroll-Bell family history for years, well before I started. In particular I would like to acknowledge the research of some of Bridget’s other descendants: the late Pat Willcox whose 2002 article on Bridget first sparked my interest in finding out more; the late Roy Mitchell, Bridget’s great- grandson, who was passionate about his family tree and genealogy and shared that knowledge freely with so many people; Marie T. Cribbin, Beth Atkinson and Karleen Reilly who, like me, are Bridget’s great-great-granddaughters and who have been so generous in sharing their research, photos and stories with me.

  • WWE: Five Burning Questions for Smackdown Heading Into Wrestlemaina 33 After the Elimination Chamber
WWE: Five Burning Questions for Smackdown heading into Wrestlemaina 33 after the Elimination Chamber Author : We just came off the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event for the Smackdown brand. On Sunday night, we saw American Alphas retain their tag team titles in a tag team turmoil match, Naomi and Bray Wyatt both won their first singles title in their WWE careers, and Randy Orton had a match of the night against Luke Harper. However, since all of that was said Smackdown now has no events until Wrestlemania. In all honesty, the next event is Fastlane for the RAW brand, which happens in the beginning of March. So after watching the show on the WWE network, I have compiled a list of questions that I feel Smackdown needs to answer over the next seven weeks leading into Wrestlemania. [Jon] Here are some questions that the blue brand needs to answer prior to Wrestlemania: 1- What do you do with American Alpha? On Sunday night, we saw Jason Jordan and Chad Gable retain their titles over the Usos, the Ascension, Slater & Rhyno, Breezeango, and the Vaudevillians. The Hype Bros were not included in this match as Zack Ryder is nursing an injury and Mojo had a match on the preshow. Since there is no viable opponent for American 1 / 3 Alpha leading into Wrestlemania, I say WWE needs to call up the Revival to the main roster. They are due to get a call-up to the main roster and the Smackdown tag team division needs a dominant heel team. I will not put the Ascension, Breezeango, or the Usos as they have all done badly in recent time.

PAUL'S CHURCHYARD {87,2 THE PENNSYLVANIA sun UNIVERSITY LIBRARY PREFACE. THE object of this little book is explained by its title. Discovery after discovery has been pouring in upon us from Oriental lands, and the accounts given only ten years ago of the results of Oriental research are already beginning to be antiquated. It is useful, therefore, to take stock of our present knowledge, and to see how far it bears out that ‘ old story’ which has been familiar to us from our childhood. The same spirit of scepticism which had rejected the early legends of Greece and Rome had laid its hands also on the Old Testament, and had determined that the sacred histories themselves were but a collection of myths and fables. But suddenly, as with the wand of a magician, the ancient Eastern world has been reawakened to life by the spade of the explorer and the patient skill of the decipherer, and we now find ourselves in the presence of monuments which bear the names or recount the deeds of the heroes of Scripture.
