  • Cubed Circle Newsletter 201 – We're Not Dead
Cubed Circle Newsletter 201 – We're Not Dead Given the absence of a newsletter last week following our 200th issue the week prior new readers could be forgiven for thinking that we were on an unannounced extended hiatus. However, as long- time readers will know this newsletter, if anything, is vulnerable to technical difficulties, even ones as trivial as the loss of a laptop charger on holiday. However, after a week off not only are we back with a double issue featuring our last piece of G1 coverage, two weeks of NXT, Mid-South from 1982, and two weeks of RAW featuring Sting, but we also have the debut of a brand new column – the Pro-Wres Digest! The goal of the Digest is to encapsulate the week that was in pro-wrestling in 3-4 pages, providing a TL;DR of sorts for those unable to devote enough time to following every news story that breaks in a given week. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for September 6th - 12th. Ben Carass. On Friday September 4th, John Cena was thought to have suffered an injury during a house show match with Kevin Owens in Hampton, VA. Amazingly, it wasn’t the springboard stunner that went wrong but another move John Cena should not be attempting, the code/infrared. Cena went for the move and Owens kind of just fell down on his chest; imagine an axe-guillotine driver but with Owens losing his balance too. When the report first broke, people were freaking out about Cena possibly suffering a neck injury, since they did stop the match for the referee to check on Cena and they went right to the finish after he was checked out.

  • 2008 OAH Annual Meeting • New York 1
Welcome ear colleagues in history, welcome to the one-hundred-fi rst annual meeting of the Organiza- tion of American Historians in New York. Last year we met in our founding site of Minneap- Dolis-St. Paul, before that in the national capital of Washington, DC. On the present occasion wew meet in the world’s media capital, but in a very special way: this is a bridge-and-tunnel aff air, not limitedli to just the island of Manhattan. Bridges and tunnels connect the island to the larger metropolitan region. For a long time, the peoplep in Manhattan looked down on people from New Jersey and the “outer boroughs”— Brooklyn, theth Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island—who came to the island via those bridges and tunnels. Bridge- and-tunnela people were supposed to lack the sophistication and style of Manhattan people. Bridge- and-tunnela people also did the work: hard work, essential work, beautifully creative work. You will sees this work in sessions and tours extending beyond midtown Manhattan. Be sure not to miss, for example,e “From Mambo to Hip-Hop: Th e South Bronx Latin Music Tour” and the bus tour to my own Photo by Steve Miller Steve by Photo cityc of Newark, New Jersey. Not that this meeting is bridge-and-tunnel only. Th anks to the excellent, hard working program committee, chaired by Debo- rah Gray White, and the local arrangements committee, chaired by Mark Naison and Irma Watkins-Owens, you can chose from an abundance of off erings in and on historic Manhattan: in Harlem, the Cooper Union, Chinatown, the Center for Jewish History, the Brooklyn Historical Society, the New-York Historical Society, the American Folk Art Museum, and many other sites of great interest.

Not many people know this, but I’ve always considered myself an artist of sorts. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. Rob’s passion for art and for professional wrestling struck me immediately as someone that has equally grown to love and appreciate both, and by Adam Pearce truth be told I am extremely jealous of his talents.

  • WWE: Five Burning Questions for Smackdown Heading Into Wrestlemaina 33 After the Elimination Chamber
WWE: Five Burning Questions for Smackdown heading into Wrestlemaina 33 after the Elimination Chamber Author : We just came off the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event for the Smackdown brand. On Sunday night, we saw American Alphas retain their tag team titles in a tag team turmoil match, Naomi and Bray Wyatt both won their first singles title in their WWE careers, and Randy Orton had a match of the night against Luke Harper. However, since all of that was said Smackdown now has no events until Wrestlemania. In all honesty, the next event is Fastlane for the RAW brand, which happens in the beginning of March. So after watching the show on the WWE network, I have compiled a list of questions that I feel Smackdown needs to answer over the next seven weeks leading into Wrestlemania. [Jon] Here are some questions that the blue brand needs to answer prior to Wrestlemania: 1- What do you do with American Alpha? On Sunday night, we saw Jason Jordan and Chad Gable retain their titles over the Usos, the Ascension, Slater & Rhyno, Breezeango, and the Vaudevillians. The Hype Bros were not included in this match as Zack Ryder is nursing an injury and Mojo had a match on the preshow. Since there is no viable opponent for American 1 / 3 Alpha leading into Wrestlemania, I say WWE needs to call up the Revival to the main roster. They are due to get a call-up to the main roster and the Smackdown tag team division needs a dominant heel team. I will not put the Ascension, Breezeango, or the Usos as they have all done badly in recent time.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.
