Divorced or widowed adults have lost an important source of social support and daily companionship but can and often do remedy this absence of a significant other by establishing a new romantic bond (Carr, 2004). Divorced and widowed men in particular report an interest in getting remarried or living together (Moorman, Booth, & Fingerman, 2006). Many older adults are successful in finding a new partner; some remarry, others cohabit, and some start Living-Apart-Together (LAT) relationships. Repartnering at an older age and living arrangements such as remarriage and cohabitation or LAT have already been the topic of ample research (e.g. De Jong Gierveld, 2002, 2004; Karlsson & Borell, 2002; Régnier-Loilier, Beaujouan, & Villeneuve-Gokalp, 2009). Studies have also been conducted on the role children and stepchildren might play in influencing their parents’ decision whether to move in together (e.g., Graefe & Lichter, 1999; Goldscheider & Sassler, 2006), but are still rather scarce, especially regarding middle-aged and older parents. This is unfortunate because parents remain parents for a lifetime and it seems more than likely that regardless of whether they still live at home, children play an important role in the decision-making about the new family constellation.

In, closing, as Jacquetta abandons her friend Margaret for the house of York, so too, does Philippa Gregory abandon a much defamed Queen to the slanders of history. Consider serving foods from the time period at your book discussion. She brings the era she is exploring to life and always tells the story from such a personal point of view that you feel you are, or at least know, the main character. When Margaret of Anjou is brought over to England to marry King Henry of Lancaster, Jacquetta, as her relative, is retrieved from the countryside to befriend the new Queen. And that was supposedly years after Jacquetta lived. Like some of her characters, she practices alchemy, she spins gold from paper pages. I really got the feeling that the book was more of a chore for PG to write rather than a pleasure. It did start to pick up a little bit better after the half way point.. She is a direct descendant of Melusina, the water goddess of legend, and this lineage gives her some powers that separate her from the everyday people around her. As in Tattooist , the writing itself is workmanlike at best and often overwrought.

												  Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval EnglandABSTRACT “She Should Have More if She Were Ruled and Guided by Them”: Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval England Laura Christine Oliver, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Beth Allison Barr, Ph.D. This thesis argues that while patriarchy was certainly present in England during the late medieval period, women of the middle and upper classes were able to exercise agency to a certain degree through using both the patriarchal bargain and an economy of makeshifts. While the methods used by women differed due to the resources available to them, the agency afforded women by the patriarchal bargain and economy of makeshifts was not limited to the aristocracy. Using Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe as cases studies, this thesis examines how these women exercised at least a limited form of agency. Additionally, this thesis examines whether ordinary women have access to the same agency as elite women. 												  Theological Reflections on Sex As a Cleansing Ritual for African WidowsTheological Reflections on Sex as a Cleansing Ritual for African Widows Elijah M. Baloyi Abstract Violence against women is deeply rooted in human history. The patriarchal gender inequalities, culture, religion and tradition have been vehicles by means of which these structured stereotypes were entrenched. In trying to keep the widow in the family as well as forcing her to prove her innocence, certain rituals were introduced, one of them being the sex cleansing ritual. Besides being both oppressive and abusive, the sex cleansing ritual can also be an instrument of sex-related sicknesses such as HIV and AIDS. Although some widows are willing to undergo this ritual, others succumb because they fear dispossession or expulsion from home, thereby forfeiting the right to inherit their late husbands’ possessions. It is the aim of this study to unveil by way of research how African widows are subjected to this extremely abusive ritual and exposed to HIV and AIDS. Their vulnerability will be examined from a theological point of view and guidelines will be given. The article will highlight how humiliating and unchristian such a ritual is for defenceless widows and their children. Keywords: Sex cleansing, ritual, widow, inheritance, sex cleansers, oppression. Colonial officials and administrators sought to encourage loyalty and obedience on part of Queen Victoria’s subjects around the world through imperial spectacle and personal interaction with the queen’s children and grandchildren. The royal tour, I argue, created cultural spaces that both settlers of European descent and colonial people of color used to claim the rights and responsibilities of imperial citizenship. The dissertation, then, examines how the royal tours were imagined and used by different historical actors in Britain, southern Africa, New Zealand, and South Asia. My work builds on a growing historical literature about “imperial networks” and the cultures of empire. In particular, it aims to understand the British world as a complex field of cultural encounters, exchanges, and borrowings rather than a collection of unitary paths between Great Britain and its colonies. Hedeman Duke John of Berry’s inventories of 1411 and 1413 record the gift of an unusual history that described the fall from power of Richard II, king of England: Item, the Livre de la prinse et mort du roy Richart d’Angleterre (Book of the Capture and Death of King Richard II), written in rhyming French in lettre de court and illustrated in several places, the incipit of the second folio qu’il eust, covered with black silk with two round clasps of gilded silver enamelled with the arms of France, which the departed vidame de Laonnois, formerly the grand maistre of the king’s household gave to the duke. [Item, le Livre de la prinse et mort du roy Richart d’Angleterre, escript en françoys rimé, de lettre de court, et historié en pluseurs lieux; et au commancement du second fueillet a escript: qu’il eust, couvert de drap de soye noir, à deux fermouers roons d’argent dorez, esmaillez aux armes de France; que le feu vidame de Laonnois, en son vivant grant maistre d’ostel du Roy, donna à Monseigneur].1 This gift from John of Montaigu, the vidame of Laonnois, to the duke is the earliest surviving copy of an eyewitness account of Richard II’s deposition in 1399 written by Jean Creton in a mixture of verse and prose. Penned some time between November 1401 and March 1402 at the request of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, it is an important early source for historians curious about the events surrounding Richard’s deposition and demise.2 The account has recently been discussed by Ardis Butterfield as an example of the importance of French as one of two ‘mother tongues’ in England and by both Paul Strohm This was first presented at the British Library Conference, ‘Divers Manuscripts both Antient & Curious’: Treasures from the Harley Collection, that took place 29-30 June 2009.

I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes.
