Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval England
ABSTRACT “She Should Have More if She Were Ruled and Guided by Them”: Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval England Laura Christine Oliver, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Beth Allison Barr, Ph.D. This thesis argues that while patriarchy was certainly present in England during the late medieval period, women of the middle and upper classes were able to exercise agency to a certain degree through using both the patriarchal bargain and an economy of makeshifts. While the methods used by women differed due to the resources available to them, the agency afforded women by the patriarchal bargain and economy of makeshifts was not limited to the aristocracy. Using Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe as cases studies, this thesis examines how these women exercised at least a limited form of agency. Additionally, this thesis examines whether ordinary women have access to the same agency as elite women. Although both were exceptional women during this period, they still serve as ideal case studies because of the sources available about them and their status as role models among their contemporaries. “She Should Have More if She Were Ruled and Guided By Them”: Elizabeth Woodville and Margery Kempe, Female Agency in Late Medieval England by Laura Christine Oliver, B.A. A Thesis Approved by the Department of History ___________________________________ Jeffrey S. Pidgeon Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 15 December 2011 ii iii ABSTRACT Who were the Wydeviles? The family arrived with the Conqueror in 1066. As followers in the Conqueror’s army the Wydeviles rose through service with the Mowbray family. If we accept the definition given by Crouch and Turner for a brief period of time the Wydeviles qualified as barons in the twelfth century. This position was not maintained. By the thirteenth century the family had split into two distinct branches. The senior line settled in Yorkshire while the junior branch settled in Northamptonshire. The junior branch of the family gradually rose to prominence in the county through service as escheator, sheriff and knight of the shire. -

Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) is the strong-willed young Princess of Spain, who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her ladies-in-waiting Lina (Stephanie Levi-John) - a Spanish noble of African Iberian descent - and the sweet and free-spirited Rosa (Nadia Parkes). When her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine until she devises an audacious plan and sets her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII. -

Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York As Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow
Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres Memòria del Treball de Fi de Grau Rewriting Historical Characters: Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York as Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow Maria Antònia Llabrés Font Grau d'Estudis Anglesos Any acadèmic 2018-19 DNI de l’alumne:43472881Y Treball tutelat per José Igor Prieto Arranz Departament de Filologia Espanyola, Moderna i Clàssica S'autoritza la Universitat a incloure aquest treball en el Repositori Autor Tutor Institucional per a la seva consulta en accés obert i difusió en línia, Sí No Sí No amb finalitats exclusivament acadèmiques i d'investigació Paraules clau del treball: reversal gender roles, historical discourse, power, recognition, fantasy Abstract This essay examines the relationship between the historical figures Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and the fictional characters Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen from the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Through the analysis of the similarities between their lives, this project attempts to prove how both fictional characters are based and influenced by Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Moreover, there is very little previous literature about the life of Elizabeth of York, obscuring and undermining her important role in putting an end to the Wars of the Roses. Thus, besides proving the relationship between these historical characters and the fictional ones, the aim of this paper is also to emphasise the historical importance given to Elizabeth of York in Game of Thrones by means of using her as a main source of inspiration for two of the most important an relevant characters of the series. As a result, this work also intends to prove how Game of Thrones demolishes gender boundaries by using characteristics of both Henry VII and Elizabeth of York to shape the characters of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. -
