    Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs A discographical survey by Ralph Moore I consider forty-six recordings of the Vier Letzte Lieder here, which is a goodly number, but by no means the total of all of those released in the nearly seventy years since their premiere in 1950. A survey cannot hope – or even want – to encompass every version but I have tried to include the most notable and have deliberately missed out a few which I know to be less than premium quality but have also reviewed one or two in the “caveat emptor” category as best avoided (see also MWI review index). These songs feature frequently in lists of personal nominations for favourite recordings, such as in the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs”. They are not a cycle as such, but all deal with the readiness for death and emanate a sense of calm, resignation and even transfiguration; I quote unashamedly from Wikipedia: “Towards the end of Im Abendrot, after the soprano's intonation of ‘Ist dies etwa der Tod?’ (‘Is this perhaps death?’), Strauss musically quotes his own tone poem Death and Transfiguration, written 60 years earlier. As in that piece, the quoted seven-note phrase (known as the ‘transfiguration theme’) has been seen as the fulfilment of the soul through death.” They are amenable to successful performance by a range of soprano voice-types, from the mezzo- tinged soprano falcon of Jessye Norman to the light, lyric sopranos of Lucia Popp or Anneliese Rothenberger, and although one or two sopranos have come a cropper in attempting them, there are many more admirable and even superlative recordings than failures.

After her first Nozze di Figaro in Bern in January 1988 many Contessas were to follow in numerous new productions (Hamburg 1990/94, Aix-en-Provence 1991, Bordeaux 1995, Amsterdam 1993 and Dresden 1995, Vienna and, with the Wiener Staatsoper, in Japan 1994). Her Mozart roles include Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito (Aix 1988, Salzburg 1991), Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte (Amsterdam 1988, Aix 1989), Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (Bordeaux 1992), Aminda in La Finta Giardiniera (Parijs 1991) and, her favourite, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (with John Eliot Gardiner in Parma, Amsterdam, London, Ludwigsburg 1994). In addition to these Mozart-roles Charlotte Margiono is gradually building a wide lyrical repertoire: Marie in Die Verkaufte Braut, Mimi in La Bohème, Agathe in Der Freischütz (role debut in Hamburg 1999), Desdemona in Otello (role debut in Paris and Amsterdam, 1994), Rusalka (role debut in the Netherlands 1998), Marguerite in a concert performance of La Damnation de Faust to close the Bernard Haitink Festival in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (1999), and Eva in Meistersinger (role debut in Amsterdam 2000). Last spring our print shop ran an issue of Wagneriana in color by mistake, and we realized how T much better the photos (and the newsletter in general) looked. At its annual meeting this year, the Board of Directors decided to purchase a color printer so we can do our own printing, which will be very economical in the long run. Having our own printer will also enable us to print color flyers and posters. Survey of Favorite CDs and DVDs/Videos Thanks to all who sent in their surveys on favorite CDs and DVDs or videos. About 5 percent of the membership responded. To see the results, please see page 12. The Wagner Journal Is Launched Barry Millington and Stewart Spencer, two British Wagnerian scholars, have launched a new publication titled The Wagner Journal, which will be issued three times a year (March, July, and November) . Barry Millington is the author/editor of seven books on Wagner, including The Wagner Compendium ; he also wrote the entries on Wagner and his operas for the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the New Grove Dictionary of Opera . Stewart Spencer is a translator. The first issue of The Wagner Journal , which just came out, contains an article with the following: an “intriguing unpublished Wagner letter to a Milanese couturier adding fuel to the theory that Wagner may have exhibited cross-dressing tendencies.” This copiously annotated article has already received considerable media attention in the U.K.’s Guardian and the New York Times.

    Dichter bij Da Ponte en Mozart dichter bij ons -Over twee trilogieën- Hoogtepunt van het theaterseizoen 2006/2007 en van het Mozartjaar 2006 was – misschien ook internationaal – de Mozart-Da Ponte-trilogie bij de Nederlandse Opera, geregisseerd door Jossi Wieler en Sergio Morabito. In Nederland heeft niemand de vergelijking gemaakt met dezelfde trilogie, zoals die een kleine twintig jaar geleden is geregisseerd door de Amerikaan Peter Sellars. Max Arian doet een poging; de grote, maatschappijkritische lijnen van Sellars tegenover de psychologische benadering tot op de millimeter van Wieler en Morabito. Max Arian In Nederland raakten de recensenten vooral in de war toen ze in november 2006 de drie opera's die Mozart maakte op libretto's van da Ponte op drie achtereenvolgende avonden in een zeer ongebruikelijke vorm te zien kregen bij de Nederlandse Opera. Ze hadden vooral moeite met de volstrekt tegendraadse Don Giovanni van regisseurs Jossi Wieler en Sergio Morabito. Kasper Jansen had het in NRC Handelsblad over "de merkwaardigste, maar ook meest intrigerende Don Giovanni" die hij ooit heeft gezien. Roland de Beer sprak in de Volkskrant over een "meesterlijke Mozart". Maar ze konden niet goed uitleggen wat er zo goed aan was, en maakten zich er van af door uitgebreid in te gaan op het boegeroep van het premièrepubliek. In Duitsland werden meer en langere stukken geschreven over de Amsterdamse trilogie, maar al in de koppen lees je dat ze daar zo moe waren van het Mozartjaar 2006 ("Mozart zonder einde") dat het experiment door hen bij voorbaat als megalomaan en mislukt werd beschouwd. In Oostenrijk en Zwitserland daarentegen waren de critici opgetogen, vooral Peter Hagmann in de Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "Een kapitale operaprestatie, waar maar weinig theaters op kunnen bogen.
