PRESIDENT HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES THE BRITISH ASIAN TRUST – INDIA DIRECTOR RECRUITMENT The British Asian Trust is seeking to recruit a dynamic leader to grow and lead our work in India. The successful candidate will work closely with our Chief Executive and Indian Advisory Council to substantially scale up the programmes, profile and influence of the Trust in India. This role will be based in Mumbai or Delhi but will involve travel around India and occasional travel to the UK. We are looking for someone who is entrepreneurial, who will be able to grasp and develop a range of creative financial instruments and approaches, but who also has a passion for social development and improving the world for disadvantaged and marginalised people. You will be highly adaptable – able to network with credibility at the highest levels of government and business and also able to build strong relationships with grassroots organisations. If this is you, we look forward to hearing from you by 28 June 2016. Richard Hawkes Chief Executive THE BRITISH ASIAN TRUST The British Asian Trust is the main international organisation linking the British Asian Diaspora to programmes supporting and empowering the poorest communities in South Asia. We were founded in 2007 by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, together with some of the most influential Asian business leaders and entrepreneurs in the UK. Our main programmes are in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and the thematic areas in which we work are anti-trafficking, education, livelihoods and mental health. We partner with local organisations that address these issues in practical and sustainable ways to make a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people. This is an incredibly exciting period for the Trust. Having successfully established a strong brand and reputation across key sections of the South Asian Diaspora and supported some tremendous grassroots organisations in South Asia, we are now at a point of transition and major growth. This growth will be driven by the impact we seek to make in South Asia, so our programmes in the region will scale-up substantially. We will be taking a unique approach. We will be a disruptive player in the international space, finding new ways of working and playing a role in transforming the way organisations “do international development”. In addition to NGOs, we will support entrepreneurs, social enterprise and the private sector. We will develop a range of financial instruments for supporting these partners – social investment, impact investing, bonds, equity as well as grants. We are the only organisation in the UK that works with all members of the South Asian Diaspora to support positive change across the whole of South Asia. This enables us to develop strong British Asia Trust India Director recruitment 1 relationships with individuals and organisations from all the different communities, nationalities and religions and ensure that the work we do is strengthened by all of these inputs. Our programmes in the region benefit enormously from this cross-community knowledge and interest that we are able to convene. This, in turn, ensures that our programmes are not only country-specific but also have a regional dimension to them – whether that be learnings from the different countries, sharing expertise or focussing on issues such as anti-trafficking for which national borders do not exist. Over the next three years it is our intention to transform the Trust into an ambitious and dynamic organisation supporting larger and more impactful programmes across South Asia, supported by people and organisations from the Diaspora and beyond. We will become an organisation that is ambitious, agile and innovative, that has a strong team which delivers and that is a dynamic and exciting organisation that is a great place to work. For more information, please visit http://www.britishasiantrust.org/ BRITISH ASIAN TRUST IN INDIA As the organisation and our programmes scale up we will remain true to the key principle that has guided the organisation to date – we will never impose plans and programmes from the UK, we will be driven by our partners and our work in-country. We do not want to do things in the UK that can be achieved far more effectively in India and we will seek to ensure that all decisions in India are driven by in-country need and solutions. Eventually this will mean that we have a strong presence in-country (small team, strong Advisory Council, key groups of friends and ambassadors). Direct project delivery will always be done through partner organisations, but to support and convene that, add value, secure funding, raise profile etc we need a small and dynamic team. This team will be led by a new India Director who will work closely with our India Advisory Council: Mukesh Ambani - Chairman & Managing Director Reliance Industries Ltd S Ramadorai - Chairman of National Skill Development Agency and Corporation Neeraj Kanwar - Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Apollo Tyres Ltd Harish Salve – Former Solicitor General of India, eminent lawyer in India Ranjit Barthakur – Chair, Balipara Foundation. An entrepreneur & adviser to private and not-for-profit sector Suhel Seth - Managing Partner of brand marketing consultancy, Counselage India Our work in India: We will focus our programmes in three areas: education, livelihoods and child welfare. We will develop and implement a programmatic approach that focuses on the outcomes and impact we want to achieve. We will work with a diverse range of partners and our programmes will include financial investment, strengthening partnerships, influence and advocacy, thought leadership and research. We will work in partnerships with philanthropists, foundations and investors. We will select project partners that have both scale and depth of impact in our chosen thematic areas of work. Our portfolio will include social enterprises and for profit players focused on social good. We will partner with the private sector and government where required to meet our objectives. In addition to grant funding we will consider other financial instruments. We do not intend to replicate impact investment vehicles that already exist and function well, instead we will partner with appropriate intermediary organisations. British Asia Trust India Director recruitment 2 Current plans for the year ahead: In 2016-17 our intention is to invest more than £650,000 in programmes in India. In our Education Fund we will develop 5-6 key partnerships that help us reach ‘in-school’ children in India who are enrolled but not learning. We are keen to understand the best levers/models that enable quality education outcomes for children. Over the course of this year we will work on 3 or 4 different approaches and then evaluate which approaches have the greatest impact and are most relevant to us. In our Livelihoods Fund we have secured a substantial amount of funding that will enable us to launch the ‘Rural Livelihoods Fund’ in India that will aim to link the farmer with markets and increase the value of their produce. In the first instance we have to establish 3-4 new partnerships and recruit a highly credible Indian Patron. In our Child Welfare / Anti-Trafficking Fund we are keen to establish a major partnership with ChildLine India to establish its credentials as an anti-trafficking helpline for India. We will also select 4-5 key project partners focussing on different areas of work in this sector. We will use our work in India to test frugal and innovative solutions to many of the problems we see across South Asia in our programme areas. Building on our experience we can use this approach to deliver a programme of work that is cutting edge and useful to development players across the world.
