  • Women's and Gender History in Central Eastern Europe, 18Th to 20Th Centuries
    Forthcoming in: Irina Livezeanu, Arpad von Klimo (eds), The Routledge History of East Central Europe since 1700 (Routledge 2015) Women‘s and Gender History1 Krassimira Daskalova and Susan Zimmermann Since the 1980s, historians working on East Central Europe, as on other parts of the world, have shown that historical experience has been deeply gendered. This chapter focuses on the modern history of women, and on gender as a category of analysis which helps to make visible and critically interrogate ―the social organization of sexual difference‖2. The new history of women and gender has established, as we hope to demonstrate in this contribution, a number of key insights. First, gender relations are intimately related to power relations. Gender, alongside dominant and non-dominant sexualities, has been invoked persistently to produce or justify asymmetrical and hierarchical arrangements in society and culture as a whole, to restrict the access of women and people identifying with non-normative sexualities to material and cultural goods, and to devalue and marginalize their ways of life. Second, throughout history both equality and difference between women and men have typically resulted in disadvantage for women. Men and women have generally engaged in different socio-cultural, political and economic activities, and this gender-based division of labor, which has itself been subject to historical change, has tended to put women in an inferior position. Even when women and men appeared as equals in one sphere of life, this perceived equality often resulted in drawbacks or an increased burden for women in another area and women‘s contribution was still devalued as compared to men‘s.

Poznań 2016. Publishing House of the Poznań Society for the Advancement of the Arts and Sciences, pp. 143–156. ISSN 2084-3011. Slovenian authors who contribute to the feminist and later lesbian discourse are often also the po- ets and writers. As far as the feminist and lesbian theory tradition is concerned, the connection to western theories is present. Slovenian women writers and their female characters think about the options of a female subject position, they reflect their own dilemmas and issues in the creative pro- cess. While the character of a heterosexual feminist is still marginal in modern Slovenian literatu- re, the character of a lesbian realizing the demands of radical feminism has become a self-evident part of the Slovenian literary production with the works of Suzana Tratnik and Nataša Sukič.     REDATELJ KOJI VLADA SCENOM BRANKO GAVELLA I MODERNIZACIJA SLOVENSKOG KAZALIŠTA Primož Jesenko Uloga Branka Gavelle (1885. – 1962.) na prostoru nekadašnje Jugo­ slavije, u Ljubljani, Zagrebu i u Beogradu, glavnim kazališnim središtima u tadašnjoj zajedničkoj državi, velika je, i bila je u zapisima Dušana Moravca i Filipa Kalana, Nikole Batušića i Georgija Para, već i znanstveno objašnjena. U godinama između 1920. i 1926., prijelaznim godinama između amaterskih nastojanja i umjetničkog kazališta, umjetnička razina slovenskog kazališta nije bila zavidna. Publika je tražila svoje i ako to nije dobila, u sve se većoj mjeri otuđivala, piše Moravec. Tako danas znamo da je Gavellin sistem režije bio ključan za idejno-estetsku i stilsku europeizaciju jugoslavenskog kazališta, za »prijelom iz romantičnog klasicizma u plemeniti realizam«.1 U Ljubljani je, u međuratnom razdoblju, utjecaj na stil slovenskog kazališta i njegov repertoar kao izvedbeni uzor imao Narodni divadlo iz Praga, a slabije su tragove ostavila kazališta iz 1 Lojze Filipič, Doktor Branko Gavella (Spominske reminiscence njegovega učenca). U to je doba Gavella isprva bio gostujući redatelj u Narodnom gledališču u Ljubljani, zatim redovni član redateljskog zbora, a poslije oslobođenja nakratko i pedagog za režiju na ljubljanskoj Akademiji za igralsko umetnost (AIU). Odobrenje Ministarstva za prosvjetu u Beogradu 1930. godine, koje se odnosilo na Gavellino »povremeno« režiranje u Ljubljani, osigurao je dopis Otona Župančiča, ondašnjeg ravnatelja Drame i Opere Narodnog kazališta u Ljubljani. (Zbog šestojanuarske diktature 1929. Gavella napušta Beograd.) Razlog za Župančičev prijedlog bio je manjak redatelja u Narodnom kazalištu u Ljubljani, jednako kao i stagnirajući estetski monopol dotadašnjih nositelja dramske režije Osipa Šesta, Cirila Debevca ili Milana Skrbinšeka, što je dovelo do inflacije raznovrsnosti u repertoaru.

It examines key works in the field and the inclusion of materials from women’s literary studies in academic programs of Slovene literature and literary theory, as well as how baccalaureate, M.A., and Ph.D. theses reflect on the materials. Research achievements and projects focusing on women authors and portrayals and representations of femininity are also reviewed. Key words: feminist literary studies, women writers, gender studies 1 Introduction This article builds on “Feministične literarnovedne raziskave – tukaj in zdaj” (Research in women’s literary studies—here and now), which appeared in the an- niversary issue of Jezik on slovstvo in 2005. In that article, I first put forth certain difficulties in describing research on the texts of women writers, the portrayals of femininity and female characters, and also with terms for theoretical studies of the concepts and problems that arise when the crux of the matter is how gender dif- ferences are entered into literary texts. FF UK, Prague Original scientific article The Genealogy of the 20th Century South Slavonic Novel: Zofka Kveder and Julka Chlapec-Djordjević The paper investigates different narrative strategies of two epistolary novels: Hanka (1915, 1917) by the Slovene-Croatian writer Zofka Kveder, (1878-1926), who lived before the First World War in Prague, and Jedno dopisivanje. Fragmenti romana (A Correspondence. Fragments of the Novel, 1932) by Julka Chlapec-Djordjević, (1882-1969), the Serbian author and feminist and ex-“monarchical” author, who was also in Prague after the First World War. Both women were feminists and writers who belonged to the Central European literary society. In addition, both of them were mediators between different cultures. Influenced by Zofka Kveder, Chlapec-Djordjević wrote her novel in a dialog with Kveder´s Hanka. Keywords: Zofka Kveder, Julka Chlapec-Djordjević, Slavonic women writers in Prague, literature in Prague. In my paper I focus on different narrative strategies of two epistolary novels: Hanka (1915, 1917) by the Slovene-Croatian writer Zofka Kveder, (1878-1926), who lived before the First World War in Prague and Jedno dopisivanje.     REVIEWS Irena Avsenik Nabergoj. Mirror of Reality and Dreams: Stories and Confessions by Ivan Cankar. Translated by Jason Blake. Frankfurt: Peter Lang, 2008. 309 pp., $74.95 (cloth). ISBN: 978-3-631- 57812-4. In Aravind Adiga’s recent international bestseller The White Tiger, the impoverished and brutalized countryside of India is referred to as “the Darkness.” From out of this brutalized and brutalizing space emerges Balwal, the book’s anti-hero. In the Ivan Cankar short story “Jakobovo hudodelstvo,” which is one of the dozens of stories analyzed in this new book by Irena Avsenik Nabergoj, the main character, the perpetrator-cum- victim named Jakob, also ventures forth from a place “where the sun does not shine” and where humanity is a long “procession of the unfortunate and the humiliated.” This story, one of Cankar’s very best in the eyes of this translator and reviewer, is an appropriate spot to begin a review of Avsenik Nabergoj’s book because its themes typify the aspects of Cankar’s oeuvre that concern her and because the abbreviated treatment the story receives points to some of the methodological challenges she faces in her book. By analyzing myriad examples of Cankar’s short and long fiction and plays, the author confronts us with the details of Cankar’s trips to the “lower depths of the human spirit” (25). Avsenik Nabergoj categorizes the kinds of suffering and injustice in Cankar’s corpus under subheadings such as abused children, suicide, alcoholism, political corruption, laziness, conceit, ignorance, apathy, lust, murder, and philistinism. 63 64 REVIEWS Whether in the teeming proletarian districts of Vienna or in the rural reaches of the St.
