Women's and Gender History in Central Eastern Europe, 18Th to 20Th Centuries
Forthcoming in: Irina Livezeanu, Arpad von Klimo (eds), The Routledge History of East Central Europe since 1700 (Routledge 2015) Women‘s and Gender History1 Krassimira Daskalova and Susan Zimmermann Since the 1980s, historians working on East Central Europe, as on other parts of the world, have shown that historical experience has been deeply gendered. This chapter focuses on the modern history of women, and on gender as a category of analysis which helps to make visible and critically interrogate ―the social organization of sexual difference‖2. The new history of women and gender has established, as we hope to demonstrate in this contribution, a number of key insights. First, gender relations are intimately related to power relations. Gender, alongside dominant and non-dominant sexualities, has been invoked persistently to produce or justify asymmetrical and hierarchical arrangements in society and culture as a whole, to restrict the access of women and people identifying with non-normative sexualities to material and cultural goods, and to devalue and marginalize their ways of life. Second, throughout history both equality and difference between women and men have typically resulted in disadvantage for women. Men and women have generally engaged in different socio-cultural, political and economic activities, and this gender-based division of labor, which has itself been subject to historical change, has tended to put women in an inferior position. Even when women and men appeared as equals in one sphere of life, this perceived equality often resulted in drawbacks or an increased burden for women in another area and women‘s contribution was still devalued as compared to men‘s. -

Slovenian authors who contribute to the feminist and later lesbian discourse are often also the po- ets and writers. As far as the feminist and lesbian theory tradition is concerned, the connection to western theories is present. Slovenian women writers and their female characters think about the options of a female subject position, they reflect their own dilemmas and issues in the creative pro- cess. While the character of a heterosexual feminist is still marginal in modern Slovenian literatu- re, the character of a lesbian realizing the demands of radical feminism has become a self-evident part of the Slovenian literary production with the works of Suzana Tratnik and Nataša Sukič. Their texts brought new, feminist1 ideas into the Slovenian literary tradition, especially in their breaking away from the existing literary models of female characters: the woman in the role of a love object and the self-sacrificing mother. -
The Social History of the Soča/Isonzo Region in the First World War
89 Petra Svoljšak The social history of the Soča/Isonzo region in the First World War The Slovene soldiers1 Slovenian participation in the Great War (1914–1918) is a classical case study of how an ethni- cally defined community experienced and survived this war. The inhabitants of the provinces of Carniola, Styria, Carinthia, and the Littoral served (mostly) in the Austro-Hungarian army and assumed various roles characteristic of life in uniform – on all four fronts they became prisoners of war, deserters, and rebels. The Slovenes from the Slavia Veneta, citizens of the Kingdom of Italy, were mobilised into the Italian army, which also brought them to the Soča/Isonzo battlefield. Slovenian soldiers for many reasons also joined so-called volun- teer forces: Austro-Hungarian citizens of Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian nationality joined the Serbian army during the Balkan Wars to support the Serbian cause, and later, during World War I, to prevail in the struggle for the creation of a new Yugoslav state. In order to undermine Austria-Hungary’s strength both militarily and as a state, volunteer military units were gathered on the Italian-Austrian front under the command of the Slovenian Reserve Lieutenant Ljudevit Pivko, and for the same reason Slovenian (Yugoslav) volunteer troops were organised in North America. With 7.800.000 to 8.000.000 drafted men during World War I, Austria-Hungary ranked fifth among the belligerent countries, which had conscripted a total of 70 million soldiers. In peacetime, the Austro-Hungarian army kept 36.000 officers and 414.000 soldiers on the active list. -

It examines key works in the field and the inclusion of materials from women’s literary studies in academic programs of Slovene literature and literary theory, as well as how baccalaureate, M.A., and Ph.D. theses reflect on the materials. Research achievements and projects focusing on women authors and portrayals and representations of femininity are also reviewed. Key words: feminist literary studies, women writers, gender studies 1 Introduction This article builds on “Feministične literarnovedne raziskave – tukaj in zdaj” (Research in women’s literary studies—here and now), which appeared in the an- niversary issue of Jezik on slovstvo in 2005. In that article, I first put forth certain difficulties in describing research on the texts of women writers, the portrayals of femininity and female characters, and also with terms for theoretical studies of the concepts and problems that arise when the crux of the matter is how gender dif- ferences are entered into literary texts. FF UK, Prague Original scientific article The Genealogy of the 20th Century South Slavonic Novel: Zofka Kveder and Julka Chlapec-Djordjević The paper investigates different narrative strategies of two epistolary novels: Hanka (1915, 1917) by the Slovene-Croatian writer Zofka Kveder, (1878-1926), who lived before the First World War in Prague, and Jedno dopisivanje. Fragmenti romana (A Correspondence. Fragments of the Novel, 1932) by Julka Chlapec-Djordjević, (1882-1969), the Serbian author and feminist and ex-“monarchical” author, who was also in Prague after the First World War. Both women were feminists and writers who belonged to the Central European literary society. In addition, both of them were mediators between different cultures. Influenced by Zofka Kveder, Chlapec-Djordjević wrote her novel in a dialog with Kveder´s Hanka. Keywords: Zofka Kveder, Julka Chlapec-Djordjević, Slavonic women writers in Prague, literature in Prague. SREČKO KOSOVEL AND THE HYBRIDITY OF MODERNISM Marko Juvan The Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Sciences, Scientific Research Centre of the SASA, Ljubljana,Slovenia The Distribution of Texts and the Aporias of Kosovel’s Reception The revolutionary idea that history is a narrative construct, an interpretation, has in the last thirty years become all but a truism, appearing even a little worn-out in the vulgata of the human sciences, and resting comfortably in the “common sense” of literary historians. In essence, they are nowadays well aware of the importance of the forms, practices and institutions of dis- tributing literary works for the interpretation and histori”al contextualisation of literature (cf. Dolinar - Juvan, eds., 2003). In other words, the cognitive sensibility for the mechanisms of representation of the past, for the channels and media through which it is observed and judged, is today a part of Kuhn’s “normal science”. The systemic approach also fits the general epistemologi- cal framework – with its perspective which captures texts amidst their liter- ary life, attached to the social and cultural circumstances of their production, distribution, reception and discursive processing through media, criticism, science or education (cf. Dović 2004). If we recognize these principles of literary history, a different aspect of the Srečko Kosovel paradox opens up:1 the incredible diversity of his poetic texts, condensed into a very short pe- riod of time, has been baffling the narratives of literary history and consist- ently outwitting any and all tools of periodisation. If we apply constructivist or systemic epistemology to the actual exam- ple of Srečko Kosovel, we might better explain the conflicting classifica- tions of his poetry within literary history, the aporias of his reception and canonisation, and the difficulties in shaping the poet’s cultural icon – the not so negligible reasons for this are precisely those anomalies in the his- torical processes of publishing and distribution of his work. -

Basic facts: 1 Population (number, ethnic differentiation) Slovenia is the most western nation among the Slavic nations and located at the important geographical crossing between Romanic, Slavic and German nations. Slovenes have thus had to provide for their survival under the pressure of Germans and Romans. Christianity came to Slovenia from Aquilea and Salzburg through Irish-Scottish monks. The Germans in particular hindered the autonomy of the Slovene people and thus prevented the missionary work of Cyril and Methodius, imprisoning Methodius in Ellwangen (Germany), because they sought to exploit the missionary work for imperial purposes. As a result, the Slovene people had to establish their political framework within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The time of national growth deepened the pressure of the dominant nations of Germany and Austria on other nations. Slovenes, Croats, Serbs in the South and the Czechs and Slovaks in the East decided during the First World War to separate themselves form the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The Slovene politicians Anton Korošec (1872-1940) and Janez Evangelist Krek (1865-1917) worked toward the separation of these nations and their subsequent reunion with the Serbian Monarchy in the Monarchy of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, also known as the First Yugoslavia (1918). The new state could not solve the problem of nationalism and the leading nation, Serbia, oppressed the other nations so that the state could fall. Around this time, the king was assassinated and the Second World War started. The communist revolution occurred during the war. There are about 46,000 victims of the revolution in Slovenia. -

Developments since then, however, have not yet been researched in a synthetic manner. The article analyzes three aspects of Hemingway’s presence in Slovenia: literary-critical reception of his works in Slovenia after 1990; his position in Slovenian popular culture; and the statistical data about the number of book loans for his books in Slovenian libraries. The analyses confirm that Hemingway’s posi- tion in Slovenia has not changed dramatically and that he remains recognized as one of the foremost 20thcentury American writers. In some European countries, his name and even translations began to appear in the 1920s (e.g., Heller 1992: 27, Winther 1992: 20, Lundén 1992: 51), not long after his first works were published in English (see Reyn- olds 2000). Slovenian readers, on the other hand, first encountered his name in 19321, when the literary monthly Dom in svet reviewed Jack London’s novel The Valley of the Moon. Although the reviewer Boris Orel primarily focused on Lon- don’s novel, he also mentioned several contemporary American writers, including Hemingway.
