GRI Index 80 1 CEO’s Message Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) constitutes one of the founding principles of Aegean Motorway. All our key Activities since the establishment of the company have been constructed and put in operation on the basis of CSR. Profitability and Social Accountability constitute parallel Processes of our business practice towards our Vision and Mission. The Management of the Company is firmly orientated towards identifying the needs and detecting the expectations of the wider Social Environment, in which it operates. Particular emphasis is given to Employees, Permanent Contractors and Suppliers, local Agencies, Municipalities and Regions, as well as the wider Environment the Motorway crosses, the Shareholders and the State. The main scope of the Company is the constant upgrade of road safety, which we promote via focused interventions and actions for our employees and the wider society. One of the key elements of our corporate philosophy is to ensure that drivers on the Motorway are satisfied with the services provided by Aegean Motorway. Of course, there are more to do, however we are confident we are moving in the right direction having developed and installed integrated management systems, including – among others - services quality management and motorway safety management systems. We included them in the corporate strategy of Aegean Motorway primarily because they benefit societies in the area the company is active in, as well as all stakeholders. By basing our actions on human values, applying processes for the continuing development of our personnel, giving the proper attention to the protection of the environment and the preservation of the ecosystem, and furthermore, by taking into account the needs of the local societies that the motorway crosses, we put in place the proper conditions for its operation and use.     Neolithic society in Northern Greece: the evidence of ground stone artefacts Volume I Christina Tsoraki Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology, University of Sheffield October 2008 to (j3en ABSTRACT Analysis of ground stone technology from the Neolithic of Greece rarely goes beyond incomplete descriptive accounts to focus on the activities performed with these tools and the contexts of their use. Ground stone products are seen as mundane static objects devoid of meaning and lacking significance. The aim of this thesis is to move away from incomplete accounts of ground stone technology and static typologies. Drawing upon the concepts of the chaine operatoire and 'object biographies' this thesis investigates ground stone technology as a social practice focusing on the life-cycle of artefacts from raw material selection to final deposition. The underlying premise is that a contextual approach can contribute to understanding the ways in which the production, consumption and discard of ground stone artefacts were structured within different forms and scales of social practice and the manner in which these differences articulated different meanings and social understandings. The aims of the thesis were materialised through the study of the rich ground stone assemblage from the LN settlement of Makriyalos, Greece. The analysis of the chaine operatoire of the Makriyalos ground stone assemblage revealed diverse technological choices expressed throughout the cycle of production and use. Established traditions existed according to which specific materials were considered to be appropriate for the production of different objects. Furthermore, detailed analysis suggests that the resulting objects were far from mundane artefacts but were instead active media for expressing choices informed by cultural understandings of appropriateness.

    SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN RURAL THessALY, 1850–1940 Fenia Lekka, Dina Moustani and George Gassias Abstract: This article is part of a research project on the transformations that took place between 1850 and 1940 in the province of Thessaly, an extensive rural region of the Balkan Peninsula. It focuses on the changes in the economic, social and demographic levels, highlighting the interrelation of these changes in rural Thessaly from the promulgation of the Land Law (1858) under the Ottoman Tanzimat reforms to the annexation of Thessaly and the implementation of extensive land reforms in the 1920s by the Greek state. Studies concerning the – predominantly rural – province of Thessaly during the nineteenth century mostly consider its annexation in 1881 by Greece as a milestone in the transfer of landed property from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek Kingdom, the acquisition of Ottoman landed estates by capitalists from the Greek diaspora from 1878 to 1881 being an essential element in this narrative. This article shall focus, firstly, on this transition, suggesting that the annexation was – in fact – a process that lasted for over a decade in terms of the province’s demographic transformation, which concluded with – as well as brought about – the gradual religious homogenisation of the population of Thessaly. Secondly, we shall study the role and profile of landowners, a process that led us to the realisation that even when the 1917 land reform was announced, a significant number ofM uslims were still among the owners of Thessalian estates, whereas Greek landowners belonging to or descending from the circle of capitalists of the Greek diaspora were relatively few in number.
