Updated on May 12, 2010, this fact sheet provides information on the FIVB and the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour. The US$6.83-million SWATCH FIVB World Tour is scheduled over an eight-month period starting in April in Brazil and ending in November in Thailand. The US$600,000 Foro Italico Beach Volley Grand Slam is the third of 12 double gender events on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar. · The SWATCH FIVB World Tour will visit to the Rome for the second-straight season as the international circuit stages its first of six Grand slam events in 2010. Rome will also host the 2011 SWATCH FIVB World Championships June 17-26 at the Parco del Foro Italico. The Foro Italico Beach Volley Grand Slam is one of two new SWATCH Grand Slam stops in 2010 along with Stare Jablonki, Poland. The $3.6-million SWATCH FIVB World Tour Grand Slam series will also return to Austria (Klagenfurt), Norway (Stavanger), Russia (Moscow) and Switzerland (Gstaad). The 2010 will mark the 15th men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Italy while the women will be competing in the European country for ninth-time with the last event being in 2006 at Modena. Roma

· The Foro Italico Beach Volley Grand Slam will be the 246th men’s and 205th women’s event on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain.

· MEN’S SEASON OPENING EVENTS - Reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States won the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour season opening event April 25 in Brasília by defeating Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego of Brazil 21-16 and 21-12 in the 38-minute finale. With Dalhausser and Rogers finishing fourth in the second 2010 event in China after losing in the bronze medal match to Alison and Emanuel, Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado reunited to win their third Shanghai gold medal together in the last four years by defeating Germany’s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann 21-15, 13-21 and 17-15 in the 62-minute title match on May 8. · WOMEN’S SEASON OPENING EVENTS- For the fifth-time in the last six years, Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca netted the title at the season’s first SWATCH FIVB World Tour event by capturing the gold medal April 24 in Brasília by defeating Germans Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig in the finals 21-15 and 21-19 in 41 minutes. After placing fourth in the season opener, 2009 world champions Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States rebounded to win the women’s Shanghai stop by scoring a 15-21, 21-16 and 15-12 victory in 56 minutes over Juliana and Larissa on May 9. · After the Rome stop, the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar when Seoul (women) and Myslowice (men) stage single-gender events May 25-30. After a week break, Moscow hosts the second grand slam event on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour June 7-14 followed by a men’s-only event in Prague June 15-20. · A new Mikasa ball, the VLS 300, will be used after being introduced at 2009 season-ending events in Sanya and Phuket.  The television coverage for the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour will feature 55 broadcast companies across the world. The coverage covers six macro-regions ( Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and the, Middle East) with IMG the FIVB’s partner for TV distribution and production. A total of 134 “live” matches and 21 highlight programs have been and will be produced and distributed throughout the season offering increased access to each SWATCH FIVB World Tour event. The 2009 international Beach Volleyball season saw an increase in international broadcasters from 24 in 2008 to 39 in 2009 when more than 1,600 total hours of primary footage of events were broadcast around the world. Each site has hosted the SWATCH FIVB World Championships (Klagenfurt in 2001, Gstaad in 2007 and Stavanger in 2009). · The opening event on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar was a double gender event in Brasília as the Brazilian capital celebrated its 50th anniversary on the third day of competition. Brazil has staged a SWATCH FIVB World Tour event every year since the start of the international circuit for men in 1987 and women in 1992. · China and Norway join Poland in each staging two SWATCH FIVB World Tour stops in 2010. · Mariehamn in the Finnish islands of Åland and The Hague in The Netherlands are also on the 2010 calendar. Here are 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour highlights. · The total prize money for 2009 was US$7.2-million. · The calendar featured 18 sites in 15 countries within three FIVB confederations (Asia, Europe and South America). · The 2009 calendar included 12 double gender events. · Italy (Rome) and Poland (Myslowice) hosted men’s only events. · Japan (Osaka), Korea (Seoul), Spain (Barcelona) and Thailand (Phuket) hosted women’s only events. · The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships were held June 25-July 5 in Stavanger, Norway. It marked the fifth-time that a European country has hosted the event. · The 2009 calendar included four SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events with total prize money of $2.4-million. The Swiss Alps village of Gstaad, which hosted the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships, was the first Grand Slam event followed by stops in Moscow, Marseille and Klagenfurt. · The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar featured three new sites, including Brasília (Brazil), Rome (Italy) and The Hague (Netherlands). · The Finnish event in Aland returned to the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar after not being held in 2008 due to the Beijing Olympic Games. · Myslowice hosted a men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour stop in 2009 after staging a women’s event in 2008. · Barcelona hosted a women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour in 2009 after staging a double gender stop in 2008. · The FIVB sanctioned two world championships for players under the age of 21.
