In the Bible God judges individuals, and families, and churches, and cities, and even nations… I would assume He also judges businesses, and labor unions, and school systems, and civic groups, and athletic associations - all of life is God’s domain. Starting in Isaiah 13, God launches a series of judgments against the Gentile nations of his day. Making Isaiah’s list are Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Tyre, and Syria. Tonight we’ll study God’s burden against the nations. ! Isaiah 15 begins, “The burden against Moab…” Three nations bordered Israel to the east - Moab, Edom, and Ammon. Today this area makes up the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - a pro-Western monarchy with its capitol city of Amman - or Ammon. ! Today, it’s fashionable to research your roots - track down the family tree. Websites like Ancestry.com utilize the power of the Internet to uncover your genealogy. For some folks this is a fun and meaningful pastime. For me, I’ve always been a little leery… I suspect I’m from a long line of horse thieves and swindlers. I’m not sure I want to know my ancestry. This is probably how most Moabites felt regarding their progenitors… ! The Moabites were a people with some definite skeletons in the closest! Their family tree had root rot. Recently, I read of a Michigan woman who gave her baby up for adoption. Sixteen years later she tracked him down on FB… only to get romantically involved. She had sex with her son… Obviously this gal is one sick pup.

Isa 1:1-2:1 1:1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand." This vision concerns Judah and Jerusalem which by no means says it has nothing to do with us today. First of all, Jerusalem is an earthly city as well as a heavenly one according to Galatians 4, therefore, all who come to believe upon Jesus are graphted into the natural olive tree. Though Isaiah’s primary audience was the tribe of Judah, his message still applied to all 12 tribes and us today. Isaiah, or Yeshayahu is said to be the son of Amoz which some translate Amos., however, these are two different people. The Jews believed Amoz to be the brother or son of King Amaziah from Judah. This would make Isaiah of royal birth. Verse 2 tells the heavens and the earth to hear and listen. This means that even the principalities, the created angels are told to hear this message. That makes me want to listen up even more. When God speaks we should give full attention and that sets the stage for our attitude as we begin this study. These aren’t words of Isaiah, but of the Lord Himself who created the heavens and the earth.

Isaiah 15-21 Kings 18 & 19
Israel now and is between Israel and Egypt. Egypt is in danger and Cush comes right after Egypt. The last king of Israel, Hosea, had been a vassal of Assyria, but reneged on that deal and tried to ally himself with Egypt. (See 2 Kings 17.) That’s what this passage is about. Instead of trusting in God, the northern 10 tribes of Israel trusted in Egypt. But Egypt is about to be deeply shamed—a shame so deep that God demonstrates it by having Isaiah walk around naked! Isaiah Chapter 15
Isaiah Chapter 15 “The burden of Moab” is aimed at Israel’s enemies in the eastern Trans-Jordan. The prophet reminds his readers of the fall of Ar, the capital of Moab, and Kir, their chief fortress. Bajith, Dibon, Medeba, Heshbon and so on, form a list of Moabite cities that will be overrun by the coming Assyrian invasion. Zoar was the city to which Lot fled after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Nimrim was a Moabite oasis near the Dead Sea. Verses 15:1 - 16:14: The demise of Moab taught Israel not to depend on that nation any more than others, but to depend on the Lord. Isaiah 15:1 "The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, [and] brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, [and] brought to silence;" Moab was a country about 30 miles square, east of the Dead Sea, South of the Amon River, and North of the Zered River. Ar and Kir were the two major cities of Moab. We decided that "burden" probably was a prophecy speaking against (in this case) Moab, who had been enemies of God's people on the east. The two cities mentioned here are no longer in existence, and it is believed that they were attacked at night and destroyed. Isaiah 15:2 "He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads [shall be] baldness, [and] every beard cut off." Moab chose the temple of the Moabite god Chemosh, (they were three miles North of the Arnon), as the place of weeping because that god had failed to deliver the nation.
