www.bmw-clubs-international.com | Council News | 10th year | Edition 2 | May 2012 Council News 2/12 BMW Clubs International Council Newsletter HimALAYA TRIP TECHNO CLASSicA BMW CLUBS CELEBRATE IMPORTERS The world leading 30 years BMW E30 INTERVIEW classic fair BMW Club Jubilees BMW Group Australia EditoRIAL Dear BMW Club Members, It is the season for increased club activity. For those in the southern hemi- sphere we leave behind the heat of summer, and the festive season is a dis- tant memory. Above the equator, memories of cold, wet days may still linger but there is the promise of increased sunshine as days grow longer, and this all means more time to spend riding or driving. Perhaps it is also time to ponder why you are a member of a BMW Club – for two wheels or four, or maybe you are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy both types of vehicle. Nevertheless, when was the last time you sat back and asked yourself why you are a member of a club? Every now and then I like to get back to the funda- mentals. In relation to club membership, the reason for being a member has probably not changed from the basic reasons why clubs were founded in the first place. This might be to enjoy the BMW experience with fellow owners, to share the road or the track, or just share the knowledge that comes from being a BMW owner. And in its simplest form, these are arguably the fundamentals we need to re-focus on from time to time. -
BMW Strategic Positioning
BMW Strategic Positioning Prepared by: Dora Hui Melissa Kinckle Candace Neff History Who is BMW? Founded in 1913 in Germany, Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works in English, puts “the motor” at the core of both their history and innovation. In the beginning, BMW built aircraft engines. Unfortunately, in 1919 after World War I, the Allies banned BMW from building aircraft engines, forcing the company to build in secret. In 1920, the logo we know so well as the trademark of BMW was created. Visually, it represents the motion of an airplane propeller, and the blue and white color scheme harkens back to its roots in Bavaria. In 1922, the first BMW factory was built in Germany to expand production. Meanwhile, BMW was back in the aeronautical industry and doing quite well with their aircraft engines. In 1928, BMW became a car company. The 1936 creation of the 328 Roadster, a car known in racing history as one of the “best and most beautiful cars” ever built, made BMW a household name. The company ran into production issues again after World War II but rallied and was back to building cars, engines and motorcycles by 1949. Throughout the ‘50s, BMW’s reputation as a creator of fast and beautiful automotives continued to grow despite financial struggles. It was with the creation of the BMW 700 that BMW began its ascent to its former glory. By 1971, BMW was enjoying commercial success and began the building of its headquarters in Munich, Germany. In 1972 during the summer Olympics in Germany, BMW strategically created “BMW Motorsports” to secure its place in the racing community. -

BMW History BMW in the 1910S - the Beginning
BMW history BMW in the 1910s - the beginning To better understand BMW today you have to know and understand BMW history. The last century gives the “flavor” of today’s BMW cars, the ingredient that makes them so special. This “special” can be almost seen as the soul of a person. BMW cars have an unmistakably personality and an obsessive care about the feeling of driving, thus their slogan "the ultimate driving machine". This creates a bond between the car and the driver that may last for a lifetime. These three magic letters stand for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works. The "Motor" is the core of this acronym and is the foundation; the key part around which BMW builds every product. BMW Drives invites you to be part in this amazing trip and you will find out the story that lies behind BMW. HOW BMW PROGRESSED FROM THIS TO 1913 The man who started all was Karl Friedrich Rapp in October 1913. Not everybody knows that BMW started as a manufacturer of aircraft with Austro-Daimler, who was unable to meet its demands that of building V12 Aero engines under license. The company expanded too quickly, and by 1916 Karl Friedrich Rapp resigned from the company because of financial troubles. The company was taken over by two Austrians Franz- Josef Popp and Max Fritz backed by a Vienna engines. Rapp establishes "Rapp-Motorenwerke" in a former bicycle factory near Munich. He starts manufacturing his own aircraft engines but unfortunately they suffered form problems with vibrations. Close to Rapp´s factory, Gustav Otto, the son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, sets up a business building small aircrafts. -
