This approach was less than successful, and ultimately was abandoned in the early 1960s. The Munich company instead began to focus on the mainstream appeal, only with a bias towards luxury and sportiness that they had earlier developed. This shift was embodied by the “New Class” 2000CS coupe, which debuted in 1965 with a two-liter four-cylinder mill and a rather funny face. In response to critics, a new “New Six CS” was appeared in 1968 with a longer nose and a truly beautiful front-end treatment that became the BMW standard for many years. At the same time a 2.8-liter, 170-hp six replaced the old four. The car had a top speed of 128 mph while still featuring luxury accoutrements like power windows, leather seats, air conditioning, and rear level control, and it carried a price around $10,000 new. This list price put it squarely in line with other European luxo models, as Mercedes-Benz’s 1968 280SE six-cylinder coupe cost more than $9,100. In 1972, BMW bored out the six to a nominal displacement of three liters and added rear disc brakes, at which point the car became known as the 3.0CS. The Bosch D-Jetronic injected version became the 3.0CSi and a lightweight version was known as the 3.0CSL. The latter was a highly successful European Touring Car racer in the mid-1970s. Neither of the latter two cars were officially imported into the U.S. Gray market examples abound. The last two model years in the U.S. were afflicted with large and unsightly bumpers. The E9 coupe, as it is known today by its internal designation, has become a highly sought after car that is essentially the post-war standard for an understatedly elegant coupe. Unfortunately, the car’s lovely body is also its undoing. Karmann built the body shells for BMW and the car is essentially one of the prettiest ways to creatively trap moisture ever devised. Rust-free and well-restored examples are rare. The other Achilles heel of the E9 coupe is overheating and resultant cylinder head cracking. Many E9s have had 3.2- or 3.5- liter engine transplants from later E24 coupes. Interestingly, this seems to have little effect on values. The visual image is of the best vehicle, in the right colors, driving onto the lawn at the finest concours. Perfectly clean, the vehicle has been groomed down to the tire treads. Painted and chromed surfaces are mirror-like. Dust and dirt are banned, and materials used are correct and superbly fitted. The one word description for #1 vehicles is "concours." #2 Excellent $125,000 #2 vehicles could win a local or regional show. They can be former #1 vehicles that have been driven or have aged. Seasoned observers will have to look closely for flaws, but will be able to find some not seen by the general public. The paint, chrome, glass and finishes will all appear as excellent. No excessive smoke will be seen on startup, no unusual noises will emanate from the engine. The vehicle will drive as a new vehicle of its era would. The one word description for #2 vehicles is "excellent." #3 Good $71,000 #3 vehicles could possess some, but not all of the issues of a #4 vehicle, but they will be balanced by other factors such as a fresh paint job or a new, correct interior where applicable. #3 vehicles drive and run well, but might have some incorrect parts. These vehicles are not used for daily transportation but are ready for a long tour without excuses, and the casual passerby will not find any visual flaws. "Good" is the one word description of a #3 vehicle. #4 Fair $37,900 #4 vehicles are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the body has a minor dent. Split seams or a cracked dash, where applicable, might be present. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or other non-stock additions might be present. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 vehicle. • BMW Group Classic Presents the Completely Restored Roadster of the “King of Rock’N’Roll” for the First Time in Public at the Popular Classic Car Show in California
Corporate Communications Press Release 04 August 2016 Elvis’ BMW 507 lives on: Comeback at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach. BMW Group Classic presents the completely restored roadster of the “King of Rock’n’Roll” for the first time in public at the popular classic car show in California. Munich. The glittering comeback is now following one of the most spectacular classic-car discoveries of recent times. The BMW 507 was driven by US musician Elvis Presley, famous already at that time as the “King of Rock’n’Roll”, while he was doing his military service in Germany. After that it disappeared for nearly 50 years and was believed to have been lost before returning to the limelight. After almost two years of exacting restoration work, BMW Group Classic is presenting the roadster for the first time in a public arena. Restored to its original condition, it will be exhibited on 18 August 2016 at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California. The BMW 507 with chassis number 70079 will be on view for visitors to the popular classic car show exactly as it was when soldier Elvis Presley took delivery of the car on 20 December 1958: with paintwork finished in Feather White, the 150 hp V8 aluminium engine under the bonnet, centre-lock rims, black-and-white interior and a Becker Mexico radio. “The opportunity to bring back the BMW 507 owned by the King of Rock’n’Roll to us here in Munich for purposes of restoration in accordance with the wishes of the previous owner, Jack Castor, was a dream come true for all those involved,” commented Ulrich Knieps, Head of BMW Group Classic.

For those in the southern hemi- sphere we leave behind the heat of summer, and the festive season is a dis- tant memory. Above the equator, memories of cold, wet days may still linger but there is the promise of increased sunshine as days grow longer, and this all means more time to spend riding or driving. Perhaps it is also time to ponder why you are a member of a BMW Club – for two wheels or four, or maybe you are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy both types of vehicle. Nevertheless, when was the last time you sat back and asked yourself why you are a member of a club? Every now and then I like to get back to the funda- mentals. In relation to club membership, the reason for being a member has probably not changed from the basic reasons why clubs were founded in the first place. This might be to enjoy the BMW experience with fellow owners, to share the road or the track, or just share the knowledge that comes from being a BMW owner. And in its simplest form, these are arguably the fundamentals we need to re-focus on from time to time.

  • BMW Strategic Positioning
BMW Strategic Positioning Prepared by: Dora Hui Melissa Kinckle Candace Neff History Who is BMW? Founded in 1913 in Germany, Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works in English, puts “the motor” at the core of both their history and innovation. In the beginning, BMW built aircraft engines. Unfortunately, in 1919 after World War I, the Allies banned BMW from building aircraft engines, forcing the company to build in secret. In 1920, the logo we know so well as the trademark of BMW was created. Visually, it represents the motion of an airplane propeller, and the blue and white color scheme harkens back to its roots in Bavaria. In 1922, the first BMW factory was built in Germany to expand production. Meanwhile, BMW was back in the aeronautical industry and doing quite well with their aircraft engines. In 1928, BMW became a car company. The 1936 creation of the 328 Roadster, a car known in racing history as one of the “best and most beautiful cars” ever built, made BMW a household name. The company ran into production issues again after World War II but rallied and was back to building cars, engines and motorcycles by 1949. Throughout the ‘50s, BMW’s reputation as a creator of fast and beautiful automotives continued to grow despite financial struggles. It was with the creation of the BMW 700 that BMW began its ascent to its former glory. By 1971, BMW was enjoying commercial success and began the building of its headquarters in Munich, Germany. In 1972 during the summer Olympics in Germany, BMW strategically created “BMW Motorsports” to secure its place in the racing community.
