How crucial is experience when con testing the Nürburgring 24 Hours? Experience is irreplaceable. You need to be able read the traffic perfectly, particularly as there are a lot of different cars and drivers, from slow to ultra- fast; from professional drivers to rank amateurs. It takes time to acclimatise to such situations.”

You have become a regular on the Nordschleife. Do you still experience the unexpected? „Yes, always. In every race there are high speed situations where you come across a gaggle of slower cars embroiled in their own battles. That is when you may have to overtake with two wheels on the grass, which looks extremely adven turous. But that is all part of racing on the Nordschleife.”

What was your most important experience in Team BMW Motorsport in 2010? “The most important realisation was that it really is about people. I was afraid before that working with a large manu- facturer meant that you would only ever be someone who has a specific function to fulfil. Actually, it’s completely the opposite. So many different people are involved in giving us drivers a car that can compete for victories. Everyone is pulling together. When the set-up is like that, it makes it easy for us in the cockpit to want to give our absolute all for the team.”

You have a huge fan base at the Nürburgring. Do you feel that support when you’re on the track? “Definitely. I think it’s similar for me as it is for Uwe Alzen: we both have lots of fans at the Nürburgring who really like us and have supported us for years. And, of course, the BMW fanbase is huge.“
