Spring 2015 Newsletter USM Women & Gender Studies CONTENTS Hello all, 1 Director’s A signature program at USM—the first and still the most robust Welcome Women’s Studies program in the state—USM WGS prides itself on our scholarly excellence and our contemporary relevance: 2 Major/Minor as a capstone project, students either write a thesis supervised & Core by a team of interdisciplinary scholars, or spend a semester working with one of our many community partners, of which we 3 GSSO have over fifty. Our program, moreover, is deeply embedded in Update movements for regional and national social justice, a stance embodied in this year’s Women’s History Month keynote 3 Student Life speaker, Alicia Garza. Update Ms. Garza is co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter; she describes the 5-6 Alum Blacks Lives Matter movement as “an affirmation of Black folks’ Updates contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.” WGS partnered with USM 7 Affiliated Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity, Multicultural Student Scholars Affairs, Gender Studies Student Organization, Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, Southern Program Maine Workers’ Center, NAACP Portland Branch, Black 8-10 Fall 2014 Education & Cultural History, and the King Fellows to bring her here on March 27. We were honored by the crowd who turned Courses up at Hannaford Hall on that special night. We’re also happy to report that our program continues to add Fall 2015 majors. That good news, however, brings with it the departure of several students, who will be graduating in May.

  • Better Than Normal: a Broadcast Highlighting Grit, Grace, and Gratitude in the Face of COVID-19
Better than Normal: A Broadcast Highlighting Grit, Grace, and Gratitude in the Face of COVID-19 Saturday, January 30, 2021 • 7pm on Fox 61, NBC CT, WFSB, WTNH Sponsorship Deadline: Friday, January 8, 2021 Funds raised through Better than Normal will advance Hartford HealthCare’s commitment to addressing health disparities. As the World Health Organization defines it, health equity implies that everyone should have a fair opportunity to obtain their full health potential. But when systematic inequities arise and affect the health status of groups of people, the human, social, and economic costs are significant. There is no shortage of evidence that social factors—including education, employment status, income level, gender, and ethnicity—greatly influence how healthy a person is. Indeed, a person’s zip code can be just as important as their genetic code when it comes to living a long healthy life. In Connecticut, inequities contribute to some disturbing health disparities: • Greater Hartford’s average life expectancy of 79.9 years masks a dramatic difference within the region. Life expectancy in one part of Northeast Hartford is just 68.9 years, more than 19 years lower than that of the neighborhood with the highest life expectancy—Avon at 88.1 years. • While only 3 percent of white adults are uninsured, 10 percent of Black adults, 11 percent of Latino adults, and 9 percent of adults with incomes under $30,000 lack health insurance. Almost a quarter of the region’s adults reported postponing potentially necessary medical care, citing numerous barriers. • Black mothers face a four times higher likelihood than white mothers of their child dying before their first birthday.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, August 21, 2017 * The Boston Globe The pick here is Andrew Benintendi over Aaron Judge Dan Shaughnessy Aaron Judge vs. Andrew Benintendi. Forget 2017 American League Rookie of the Year. I’m asking . which guy would you rather have on your team for the next 15 seasons? We love these Yankee-Red Sox mano-a-manos. It’s as old as the rivalry itself. Joe DiMagggio came to the bigs in 1936. Ted Williams burst on the scene three years later. Throughout the 1940s, it was a raging argument. We were even led to believe that the respective owners of the Sox and Yankees once made a late-night swap while in a drunken haze. The alleged trade was called off by dawn’s early light. Remember when the Sox had Carlton Fisk and the Yanks had Thurman Munson? New York’s grumpy catcher was a league MVP before his career was tragically cut short when he crashed his plane in 1979. Fisk went on to become a Hall of Famer. Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs were rivals of sorts in the 1980s and who can forget those early years of this new century when Nomar Garciaparra vs. Derek Jeter was a real debate. Now we have Judge and Benintendi. Big Poison and Little Poison. It’s 6 feet 7 inches and 282 pounds vs. 5-10 and 170. It’s not about Rookie of the Year anymore. Even though he is playing as badly as anyone can play at the moment, Judge pretty much retired the rookie trophy with his ridiculous first half.

  • Versatile Fox Sports Broadcaster Kenny Albert Continues to Pair with Biggest Names in Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Erik Arneson, FOX Sports Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 [email protected] VERSATILE FOX SPORTS BROADCASTER KENNY ALBERT CONTINUES TO PAIR WITH BIGGEST NAMES IN SPORTS Boothmates like Namath, Ewing, Palmer, Leonard ‘Enhance Broadcasts … Make My Job a Lot More Fun’ Teams with Former Cowboy and Longtime Broadcast Partner Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston and Sideline Reporter Laura Okmin for FOX NFL in 2016 With an ever-growing roster of nearly 250 teammates (complete list below) that includes iconic names like Joe Namath, Patrick Ewing, Jim Palmer, Jeremy Roenick and “Sugar Ray” Leonard, versatile FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert -- the only announcer currently doing play-by-play for all four major U.S. sports (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) -- certainly knows the importance of preparation and chemistry. “The most important aspects of my job are definitely research and preparation,” said Albert, a second-generation broadcaster whose long-running career behind the sports microphone started in high school, and as an undergraduate at New York University in the late 1980s, he called NYU basketball games. “When the NFL season begins, it's similar to what coaches go through. If I'm not sleeping, eating or spending time with my family, I'm preparing for that Sunday's game. “And when I first work with a particular analyst, researching their career is definitely a big part of it,” Albert added. “With (Daryl Johnston) ‘Moose,’ for example, there are various anecdotes from his years with the Dallas Cowboys that pertain to our games. When I work local Knicks telecasts with Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier on MSG, a percentage of our viewers were avid fans of Clyde during the Knicks’ championship runs in 1970 and 1973, so we weave some of those stories into the broadcasts.” As the 2016 NFL season gets underway, Albert once again teams with longtime broadcast partner Johnston, with whom he has paired for 10 seasons, sideline reporter Laura Okmin and producer Barry Landis.
