We were even led to believe that the respective owners of the Sox and Yankees once made a late-night swap while in a drunken haze. The alleged trade was called off by dawn’s early light. Remember when the Sox had Carlton Fisk and the Yanks had Thurman Munson? New York’s grumpy catcher was a league MVP before his career was tragically cut short when he crashed his plane in 1979. Fisk went on to become a Hall of Famer. Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs were rivals of sorts in the 1980s and who can forget those early years of this new century when Nomar Garciaparra vs. Derek Jeter was a real debate. Now we have Judge and Benintendi. Big Poison and Little Poison. It’s 6 feet 7 inches and 282 pounds vs. 5-10 and 170. It’s not about Rookie of the Year anymore. Even though he is playing as badly as anyone can play at the moment, Judge pretty much retired the rookie trophy with his ridiculous first half.

    The Boston Red Sox Saturday, June 27, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB’s pandemic rules mean big changes for Red Sox TV and radio coverage Chad Finn In Major League Baseball’s packet of rules and regulations for restarting the season even as the COVID-19 virus refuses to yield the field, the effects the pandemic will have on the way media members do their jobs may as well be footnotes. That’s understandable given the wholesale changes required to the schedule and the implementation of complex protocols just to get a 60-game season started. Still, the changes with the media are significant, and will have a noticeable effect on what viewers and listeners receive for a game broadcast. A few notable rules: Only 35 media members per game will be allowed in the ballpark, including photographers but not including broadcasters; interviews with players and other personnel will be done via video conferencing; reporters must leave the ballpark within an hour of the end of postgame interviews. The rules for the television and radio teams are unlike anything that has been done before. Home teams will provide a “neutral” feed for each game, with instructions to show players on both teams equally; television commentators will not be in the ballpark for road games, instead calling them off a feed, but radio announcers will be permitted in road booths. The Red Sox broadcast teams for WEEI radio and NESN are in the process of figuring out their approaches, but some groundwork has already been laid for the targeted July 23 or 24 restart.

    The Boston Red Sox Friday, April 3, 2020 * The Boston Globe Here are the best ballplayers I’ve covered, position by position Peter Abraham My first game as a beat writer was Aug. 6, 2002. The New York Mets played the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park and I was there working for the Journal News, a newspaper based in White Plains, N.Y. Two future Hall of Famers, Roberto Alomar and Mike Piazza, were in the lineup for the Mets that night. With Alomar on first base, Piazza homered off Ben Sheets in the top of the first inning and the Mets went on to win the game, 5-1. Looking up that box score led to this thought: Who are the best players I’ve covered in 18 years on the baseball beat? I had the Mets from 2002-05, the Yankees from 2006-09, and the Red Sox since 2010. For the purposes of this list, only players from those teams are eligible, and it’s based on how they played at the time I was covering the team. Here is my list: First base Mark Teixeira I covered one year of Mo Vaughn with the Mets when he was still good, and that was a lot of fun. But Teixeira had a .948 OPS for the Yankees in 2009 and finished second in the MVP voting for a World Series champion. He also won a Gold Glove. Mike Napoli had an outstanding 2013 season for the Sox. Adrian Gonzalez hit .321 with an .895 OPS in two seasons with the Sox.
