Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of musicians working feverishly through the late ’70s and early ’80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.

H-Midwest CFP: Prince and the Minneapolis Sound Discussion published by Molly Reinhoudt on Monday, May 22, 2017 Type: Call for Publications Date: August 7, 2017 Subject Fields: African American History / Studies, Black History / Studies, Music and Music History, Popular Culture Studies In spring 2016, Dr. Shannon Cochran and I put out a call for manuscripts for a special issue of the Journal of African American Studies examining the life and legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson. The response was overwhelming and we are happy to report that the special issue will be published fall 2017. While it is too late to submit entries to the special issue we’d like to encourage you to submit your work to an edited book on which we have embarked. Although this edited book will consist mainly of scholarly articles, we welcome opinion pieces, interviews of appropriate figures, reflections, poems, and the like. In addition to papers specifically about Prince, writers are also encouraged to consider, but of course not limit themselves to, other figures and topics such as Andre Cymone, Sheila E., Dez Dickerson, Morris Day, Morris Day and The Time, Flyte Time, The Family, Vanity, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, The Original 7ven, Prince and the Revolution, The Revolution, Prince’s impact on Mint Condition, Jill Jones, Joni Mitchell and her impact on Prince, The Minneapolis Sound, Carmen Electra, Tamar, The John Nelson Trio, Stokely of Mint Condition, and Prince and the New Power Generation. This list is by no means exhaustive. Writers are encouraged to be as creative with their ideas as Prince was with his songwriting, music, and performances.

INDIE ROCK SUBCULTURE: HAMILTON AS MICROCOSM INDIE ROCK SUBCULTURE: HAMILTON AS MICROCOSM By KATHLEEN DAVIES, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Kathleen Davies, April 2006 MASTER OF ARTS (2006) McMaster University (Music Criticism) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Indie Rock Subculture: Hamilton as Microcosm AUTHOR: Kathleen Davies, B.A. (McMaster University) NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 123 11 ABSTRACT In recent years, interest in the indie rock subculture has exploded, both in the popular press and among popular music scholars and culture theorists. This is an ethnographic study of the indie rock scene in Hamilton, Ontario. Hamilton represents a microcosm of what is happening in other local indie scenes. The geographical, historical and cultural locality of Hamilton creates a sense of shared identity among individuals connected by the common interest in indie rock. This study focuses on how independent rock's network of social practices and economic institutions works to locate subjects within Hamilton's local network while connecting them to the larger framework of interlocal scenes. Aspects of the local and interlocal are explored through narratives of indie aesthetics, style, fashion, institutions, cultural practices, authenticity and investment. Cultural practices, including the production and consumption of indie rock are examined through the lens of Bourdieu' s concept of cultural capital, which exposes constructions and configurations of class, generation, ethnicity, and gender. 111 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thank you to: Dr. Susan Fast for her encouragement to pursue my Masters degree. Dr. Christina Baade. As my supervisor of research, her guidance and encouragement helped ensure this project came to fruition.

  • Purple Rain”—Prince (1984) Added to the National Registry: 2011 Essay By: Eddie Santiago (Guest Post)*
“Purple Rain”—Prince (1984) Added to the National Registry: 2011 Essay by: Eddie Santiago (guest post)* “Purple Rain” Original label Prince Film soundtracks are usually an afterthought--mere companion pieces designed to exploit the revenue potential of a movie. This makes “Purple Rain” (1984) truly exceptional. While it is intimately connected to the film of the same name, “Purple Rain” stands on its own as the profound statement of its author--Prince. Prince had been laying the foundation for “Purple Rain” since his debut album in 1978. He looked and sounded otherworldly to the audiences that first encountered him. In truth, his originality was infused with the influences of Sly Stone, James Brown, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Tower of Power, Steely Dan, Curtis Mayfield, Fleetwood Mac, and George Clinton. Yet, Prince was not at all derivative. In fact, his music was ahead of its time. Unapologetically provocative, he pushed past the culturally imposed limitations of musical genres, gender roles, and religious symbolism with each successive album, video, and tour. Buoyed by boundary breaking airplay on the nascent national jukebox—MTV--he reached the crossover threshold with “1999” (1982). That album sold millions of copies off the top ten hits “1999” and “Little Red Corvette.” In conceptualizing his next album, Prince wanted to do more than outsell the previous one. He was now in a position to share his gifts and his worldview with a global audience. As revealed in the song “Baby I’m a Star,” the film “Purple Rain” served as his vehicle for inviting people into his world (“Hey, look me over/tell me, do you like what you see?”) without having to compromise his vision (“before the night is through you will see my point of view/even if I have to scream and shout”).

Roise December 2015 Hess, Roise and Company The Foster House 100 North First Street Minneapolis, Minnesota 55401 Note: The building that housed the Union Bar is located at the intersection of East Hennepin and Central Avenues Northeast. Both street names are used interchangeably in primary sources that refer to this site, but the address of the Union Bar is most commonly 507 East Hennepin. For the sake of consistency, this account will use East Hennepin for the building numbered 505–507 and Central Avenue Northeast for the building numbered 509–513, even though the name “East Hennepin” was not adopted until 1913. 1852 James Sargent Lane, age nineteen, settles in Saint Anthony. There, he joins his older brothers Silas and Isaac, who had arrived in 1848. The brothers work in the lumber business.1 The Lane brothers were born in New Brunswick, Canada, although both their parents are natives of Maine. Their father, Silas Nowell Lane, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a lumberman, moved to Canada, continuing to harvest the pine forest across a national border.2 1855 The Lane brothers are joined in Saint Anthony by their parents, Silas and Velona (or Velma in some sources), and younger brother, Leonidas.3 1856 By this year, the entire family lives on a parcel of land at the corners of Fifth Street, Bay Street (present-day East Hennepin), and Mill Street (present-day Central Avenue Northeast).
