UniverSoul was founded by singer Kathleen Johnson, who may seem more like The Minneapolis Sound historian when recalling how it all started in the living rooms, basements, schools and streets of North and South Minneapolis. Vibe Fridays is bringing The Minneapolis Sound with a twist of professional networking to posh downtown nightspot, The Tangiers. What is the Minneapolis Sound? The Minneapolis Sound as a hybrid mixture of funk, pop, synthpop and new wave in the late 1970s. Its identifying characteristics were the replacing of horns with synthesizers, drums were processed higher than traditional funk and the rhythm was faster and less syncopated. Thanks to it origins, many musicians’, singers’ and artists’ careers were magnified and amplified in the 80s. Morris Day and The Time, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Ta mara & The Seen, Sheila E., Jesse Johnson, Brownmark, Mazarati and The Family, to name a few. “While the Twin Cities underground music scene is vibrant, extraordinarily talented musicians have faced years of hardship economically. Extraordinary talent and experience does not equate to a good living in the Twin Cities, where the musician pay bar is set below poverty in my opinion”, said Kathleen Johnson. Musicians4Musicians, founded by Kathleen Johnson in 2009, was established to support musicians through the rough times with gigs, health and wellness and even housing. Kathleen tells a story of a city where an all black band led by same, still cannot work in the mainstream clubs, or the private sector. In 2016, racial disparities plague the entertainment industry, even with musicians who come off the road from touring with legendary international artists like The Commodores, Chaka Chan, Cameo and The Pointer Sisters, to name a few. Vibe Fridays at The Tangiers starts this Friday with a unique mix of live music, dining, dancing and professional networking. The music lineup will include new artists mixed with some of The Minneapolis Sound originators. “The night is about bringing innovative and creative minds together to create an extraordinary collaboration of ideas with savvy business professionals that value life and music”, explained Monique Linder, Founder of OMG Media Solutions. Its intersectionality with class, gender, sexuality, age, ability, and more is complex and cannot simply be transcended as if it does not shape our choices, our ideologies, and our cognitive frameworks. And Prince, as a Black man, and as an artist, was no stranger to this. Flirting with the demarcated boundaries of every- thing, including gender and race, Prince presented us with a seem- ingly endless catalogue of musical and performative works that showcase, not “transcend,” the complexity of Blackness, masculinity, and their cultural intersections. This essay will analyze how Prince challenged racial stereotyping, the false equivalence of this with racial transcendence by looking at Prince’s Purple Rain era. In doing so, I push to undermine this interpretation of racial transcendence, articulate how race is in fact inextricable from his artistry, and illus- trate how an awareness of this serves to benefit the legibility of Blackness and Black gender dynamics within not only Prince’s art, but within Western society. Hard time is how life has traditionally been clocked in North Minneapolis; this is the place 'Time' forgot twelve years ago when the magazine's cover trumpeted "The Good Life in Minnesota," alongside a picture of Governor Wendell Anderson holding up a walleye. Though tame and middle-class by Watts and Roxbury standards, the North Side offers some of the few mean streets in town. The old sights bring out more Babbitt than Badass in Prince as he leads a leisurely tour down the main streets of his inner-city Gopher Prairie. He cruises slowly, respectfully: stopping completely at red lights, flicking on his turn signal even when no one's at an intersection. Gone is the wary Kung Fu Grasshopper voice with which Prince whispers when meeting strangers or accepting Academy Awards. Cruising peacefully with the window down, he's proof in a paisley jump suit that you can always go home again, especially if you never really left town.
