After a couple of decades of the record being out of print, Brent sat down with fellow guitarist Dario Cortese and worked out this transcription lick by lick.It's full of definitive country picking and slick jazz. If you can't find a download of the album there are videos out there of most of the tunes, so you can see Mason's fingers at work.This book shows exactly how he plays all those hot licks.There's something here for every picker who can sit still long enough to dig into it.     ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date.

At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

    Don Rich-Bakersfield Guitar Don Rich was the guitarist for Buck Owens' band, the Buckaroos, from 1961 up to his death in 1974. He helped to define 'Chicken Pickin' and was one of the earliest guitarists to use the scratchy staccato playing. He spent his entire career playing either with Buck Owens or with the Buckaroos (which was just Owens' backing band). Along with guitar he played the fiddle, which he did really well on a lot of Buck Owens songs. Don used a Telecaster and Fender amps. This article isn't really gear heavy, but to get the sound use a clean tone on the edge of breakup. Thin strings work well and just a bit of reverb. Listen closely to hear the picking technique. He some times pulls the strings to give it a slappy sound. In this installment of Getting Deeper with Country, I'm going to look at a few of Don Rich's signature licks. As a student of the music you might want to take these licks to different parts of the neck, or just use a technique from them to create your own licks. Three of these come from Rhino's The Very Best of Buck Owens Vol 1. "Buckaroo" is from The Instrumental Hits of Buck Owens. All four of the songs are very common and easy to find on YouTube or anywhere else! Make sure to check out some of the live recordings, Live at Carnegie Hall and Live in Japan are two of the best. There is also a collection of instrumental songs of Don Rich and the Buckaroos, definitely worth checking out.

    Brent Mason's A Lot About Livin' Licks Brent Mason is one of the most recorded guitarists of all time. Just about every major country recording artist has had Brent as the guitarist on their record, and he has played on tons of #1 songs, won Grammy's, and has won Guitarist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music 14 times! He's prolific and an amazing guitarist. This lesson is based on licks gleaned from the Alan Jackson recording, A Lot About Livin' (and A Little About Love). Brent's work with Alan Jackson is some of the coolest chicken pickin' and country guitar on record. She's Got the Rhythm The first lick we'll check out is the ending lick from “She's Got the Rhythm.” The lick happens at 2:11 in the song. Country and blues players have some great endings. This is definitely one to put in your back pocket. It's in A, and is comprised of thirds moving down what many call the country hybrid scale. It's basically a combination of the blues scale and mixolydian mode. Much of this stuff lays out easily on the guitar, and this is no exception. He combines fourths and thirds in the lick, but it's all right where it would land under the fingers. The lick ends with a typical blues move-a 9 chord on b2 resolving a half step below. I Don't Need the Booze The next lick we'll check out is a fill from “I Don't Need the Booze.” He snaps the strings using a thumb pick and fingers.

Killen, Alabama, March 16, 1943 “David Briggs could play any style, and he had that soul influence coming from Muscle Shoals.” – Mac Gayden, Member of The Nashville Cats David Briggs began playing piano on R&B, pop, and country hits in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in his teens. After a brief stint as a pop singer, Briggs moved to Nashville in 1964 to focus on a career as a studio musician. The following year, Briggs backed Elvis Presley in the studio, an association that continued until Presley’s death. Briggs juggled instruments and genres through the decades, playing piano and organ on country hits by Charley Pride and Jerry Reed, by Alabama and Reba McEntire, and by Kenny Chesney and Shania Twain. On the rock side, Briggs recording with by Eric Andersen, Joan Baez, Beau Brummels, J.J. Cale, the Monkees, and Bob Seger. The keyboardist was a member of the acclaimed band Area Code 615, made up of Nashville studio pros. In 1969, Briggs and bassist-producer Norbert Putnam opened Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville, and the studio became a favorite of visitors from New York, Los Angeles, and other music centers. Briggs also has been an arranger, producer, a songwriter, and a music publisher (including the Academy Award-winning song “Up Where We Belong” and the Steve Winwood hit “Higher Love.”) Kenny Buttrey b. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life.
