American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon v. Verizon Northwest Inc., United Tele- WWW.ACLU-OR.ORG phone Company of the Northwest dba Sprint, and Qwest Corporation [email protected] UM Docket 1265 Dear Commissioners: As you know from our Complaint of May 24, 2006, the ACLU of Oregon is deeply concerned about allegations reported in USA Today and other major media outlets that various telecommunications companies have provided the National Security Agency (“NSA”) with the personal calling details of customers, including telephone numbers called, time, date, and direction of calls. If these reports are true, telecommunication companies have systematically and flagrantly violated the privacy rights of their custom- ers by sharing information that reveals their associations, interests and a host of personal details about their lives. We are not alone in that concern. Since ACLU complaints were filed with various public utility commissions across the country, the public utilities commission of Vermont has launched investigations regarding phone companies disclosing customer records to the NSA. The state of Washington’s public utilities commission is holding public hearings on the subject and Maine is considering a full-scale investigation, as well. In other states, such as California and Illinois, there are court actions pending regarding the release of phone company records to the NSA. In addition to actions by regulators and courts, individuals are raising their voice to de- mand a full and fair accounting of what telecommunications companies have done with their phone records. The ACLU has been contacted by tens of thousands of individuals nationwide. In Oregon, to date, 1,774 individuals have asked us to share their name with you and let you know that they support the ACLU of Oregon’s Complaint and want the Oregon Public Utility Commission to fully investigate the matter. • ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015
ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date.

March 2007 Newsletter ----------------------------------- Yesterday & Today Records 255A Church St Parramatta NSW 2150 phone/fax: (02) 96333585 email: [email protected] web: www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------------ Postage: 1 cd $2.00/ 2cd $3/ 3-4 cds $5.80* (*Recent Australia Post price increase.) Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

The guitarist, composer and loops magician is a quiet but ubiquitous force on stages around his hometown. With fearsome chops and a keen ear for odd beauty, Pirog has helped expand the possibilities of jazz, rock and experimentalism in a city formerly known for its straight-ahead tradition. Pirog performs regularly in a broad spectrum of venues (and musical contexts) across DC – jazz and rock clubs, the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, art galleries and museums, the annual Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music, and much more. DC has a rich legacy of brilliant guitarists and gifted composers – Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, John Fahey, and Duke Ellington come to mind for key roles they played in the city’s 20th Century musical past. In the cutting-edge cultural and technological mecca that is the new, 21st Century Washington, Anthony Pirog is DC’s leading guitarist/composer and fast rising star. Palo Colorado Dream—recorded with the all-star trio of Michael Formanek on bass and Ches Smith on drums—is Pirog’s Cuneiform Records debut as a bandleader, and it marks the young innovator’s entrance onto the national stage.

  • Don Rich-Bakersfield Guitar Don Rich Was the Guitarist for Buck Owens' Band, the Buckaroos, from 1961 up to His Death in 1974
Don Rich-Bakersfield Guitar Don Rich was the guitarist for Buck Owens' band, the Buckaroos, from 1961 up to his death in 1974. He helped to define 'Chicken Pickin' and was one of the earliest guitarists to use the scratchy staccato playing. He spent his entire career playing either with Buck Owens or with the Buckaroos (which was just Owens' backing band). Along with guitar he played the fiddle, which he did really well on a lot of Buck Owens songs. Don used a Telecaster and Fender amps. This article isn't really gear heavy, but to get the sound use a clean tone on the edge of breakup. Thin strings work well and just a bit of reverb. Listen closely to hear the picking technique. He some times pulls the strings to give it a slappy sound. In this installment of Getting Deeper with Country, I'm going to look at a few of Don Rich's signature licks. As a student of the music you might want to take these licks to different parts of the neck, or just use a technique from them to create your own licks. Three of these come from Rhino's The Very Best of Buck Owens Vol 1. "Buckaroo" is from The Instrumental Hits of Buck Owens. All four of the songs are very common and easy to find on YouTube or anywhere else! Make sure to check out some of the live recordings, Live at Carnegie Hall and Live in Japan are two of the best. There is also a collection of instrumental songs of Don Rich and the Buckaroos, definitely worth checking out.

  • Brent Mason's a Lot About Livin' Licks Brent Mason Is One of the Most Recorded Guitarists of All Time
Brent Mason's A Lot About Livin' Licks Brent Mason is one of the most recorded guitarists of all time. Just about every major country recording artist has had Brent as the guitarist on their record, and he has played on tons of #1 songs, won Grammy's, and has won Guitarist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music 14 times! He's prolific and an amazing guitarist. This lesson is based on licks gleaned from the Alan Jackson recording, A Lot About Livin' (and A Little About Love). Brent's work with Alan Jackson is some of the coolest chicken pickin' and country guitar on record. She's Got the Rhythm The first lick we'll check out is the ending lick from “She's Got the Rhythm.” The lick happens at 2:11 in the song. Country and blues players have some great endings. This is definitely one to put in your back pocket. It's in A, and is comprised of thirds moving down what many call the country hybrid scale. It's basically a combination of the blues scale and mixolydian mode. Much of this stuff lays out easily on the guitar, and this is no exception. He combines fourths and thirds in the lick, but it's all right where it would land under the fingers. The lick ends with a typical blues move-a 9 chord on b2 resolving a half step below. I Don't Need the Booze The next lick we'll check out is a fill from “I Don't Need the Booze.” He snaps the strings using a thumb pick and fingers.

There are Literally hundreds upon hundreds of great titles. If you would like to order from this newsletter you can email, phone or post an order. If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life.
