Insect hotel-cleaning and care Should you clean and care for an insect house yes or no Whilst this question often comes up , please read the following

An insect hotel or home should be made from natural materials without any manmade finish. In nature the choose natural materials without any chemical coatings such as varnish or paint. This is say places that do not have any chemical smell. If you need to clean youur insect hotel use use only clean natural water. In truth you will should not ever need to clean the hotel. In time it will take on a natural grey ,silver patina. If you really want to protect your hotel you can use a natural beewax, olive oil or sunflower oil to keep it natural and not put off any of the insects. The entrance to the insect hotel should not be disturbed, the insects will keep this free themselves Sometimes larvae lay for 6 months before they emerge. So you must not worry about them being in closed space and not being able to survive.

Insect hotel cleaning and keeping it free from spiders webs

Spiders eat insects. For this reason they make spin their webs in the flight path of insects, the entrance to the insect hotel. This means freshly emerging insects can make a ready meal for a hungry spider .To hinder this keep your house free from spiders webs, more is not necessary

As a rule you do not have to change the filling in your insect hotel. However if for one reason or another , the wind or other small animals may take some of the filling, this being the case and it should be topped up.To do this you can also use dry twigs, and the soft inners from the stems of blackberry , raspberry or hedge for your nest
