Moore in America: Monumental Sculpture at The New York Botanical Garden May 24 – November 2, 2008 Backgrounder: The New York Botanical Garden’s Legacy of Natural and Designed Landscapes The New York Botanical Garden, a 250-acre site that has been designated a National Historic Landmark, offers a wealth of beautiful landscapes, including a hardwood Forest, ponds, lakes, streams, rolling hills with dramatic rock outcroppings carved by glaciers, and New York City’s only freshwater river, which runs through the heart of the Forest in a magnificent rock gorge. These picturesque natural features have been further enhanced by more than a century of artful plantings, gardens, and landscapes designed by the nation’s leading landscape architects and garden designers. As a result of both its natural and human legacies, the Botanical Garden today offers an exceptional setting for outdoor sculpture. Scenic beauty and stunning natural features Following the New York State Governor’s approval on April 28, 1891, of The New York Botanical Garden Act of Incorporation, a site needed to be selected for the location of this new educational and scientific institution. Selection turned to an undeveloped park in the central Bronx. In 1887, a published description of this area notes, “it would be difficult to do justice to the exquisite loveliness of this tract without seeming to exaggerate…gigantic trees, centuries old, crown these summits, while great moss and ivy-covered rocks project here and there at different heights above the surface of the water, increasing the wildness of the science.” An 1893 newspaper account describes the romantic vistas of an old stone house, snuff mill, and other artifacts of previous land use, while surrounded with “almost every tree known to the American forest in the Northern clime.” The underlying bedrock, dark gray Fordham gneiss, shapes many rock outcrops, rolling hills, and steep slopes, ranging from 20 to 180 feet above sea level. -

Agriculture and the Future of Food: The Role of Botanic Gardens Introduction by Ari Novy, Executive Director, U.S. Botanic Garden Ellen Bergfeld, CEO, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America The more than 320 million Americans alive today depend on plants for our food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and other critical resources. Plants are vital in today’s world just as they were in the lives of the founders of this great nation. Modern agriculture is the cornerstone of human survival and has played extremely important roles in economics, power dynamics, land use, and cultures worldwide. Interpreting the story of agriculture and showcasing its techniques and the crops upon which human life is sustained are critical aspects of teaching people about the usefulness of plants to the wellbeing of humankind. Botanical gardens are ideally situated to bring the fascinating story of American agriculture to the public — a critical need given the lack of exposure to agricultural environments for most Americans today and the great challenges that lie ahead in successfully feeding our growing populations. Based on a meeting of the nation’s leading agricultural and botanical educators organized by the U.S. Botanic Garden, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America, this document lays out a series of educational narratives that could be utilized by the U.S. Botanic Garden, and other institutions, to connect plants and people through presentation -

Majestic buildings, park, views, unseen meridian and a wealth of history form a unified whole of international importance. The maintenance and management of this great place requires sensitivity and constant care.’ ROYAL PARKS REVIEW OF GREEWNICH PARK 1995 CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD Greenwich Park is England’s oldest enclosed public park, a Grade1 listed landscape that forms two thirds of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The parks essential character is created by its dramatic topography juxtaposed with its grand formal landscape design. Its sense of place draws on the magnificent views of sky and river, the modern docklands panorama, the City of London and the remarkable Baroque architectural ensemble which surrounds the park and its established associations with time and space. Still in its 1433 boundaries, with an ancient deer herd and a wealth of natural and historic features Greenwich Park attracts 4.7 million visitors a year which is estimated to rise to 6 million by 2030. We recognise that its capacity as an internationally significant heritage site and a treasured local space is under threat from overuse, tree diseases and a range of infrastructural problems. I am delighted to introduce this Greenwich Park Conservation Plan, developed as part of the Greenwich Park Revealed Project. The plan has been written in a new format which we hope will reflect the importance that we place on creating robust and thoughtful plans. -

They have an intrinsic value as well as the much stated economic value, (estimated at £691 million per year to the UK economy). Our members, volunteers and staff are united around the shared purpose of ensuring their existence and conservation. But we need more people to understand, enjoy and cherish our bumblebees, that’s why at the AGM in December I urged everyone in the room to ‘Bee the Revolution’. Reversing the Buff-tailed bumblebee trend in their declines, needs a concerted effort by all of us who (Bombus terrestris) are passionate about them. “ Please help by asking friends and family to join the Trust. This results in 137 species, which is 41% of all species that occur in the Netherlands. The species of priority are: Andrena rosae, A. labialis, A. wilkella, Bombus jonellus, B. muscorum and B. veteranus. Potential species of priority are: Andrena pilipes, A. gravida Bombus ruderarius B. rupestris and Nomada bifasciata. Threats to bees are: scaling up in agriculture, eutrophication, reduction of flowers, pesticides and competition with honey bees. -

Pollinator Garden Plant Suggestions - Perennials Heart of Uwchlan Project Tips for Planting a Pollinator Garden • Assess your location. Is it dry? Often wet? Is soil clay or loamy? How much sun or shade? Select plants appropriate to the conditions: “Right plant in the right place.” • Plant so you have blooms in every season. Don’t forget late summer/autumn bloomers; migrating butterflies need that late season pollen and nectar. • Plant for a variety of flower color and shape. That’s prettier for you, but it also appeals to a variety of pollinators. Some bees and butterflies prefer specific plants. • Plant in groups of at least three . easier for pollinators to find and browse. • Don’t forget the birds. Plant tubular flowers for hummingbirds, bushes with berries for birds (see related Plant List for Shrubs). • Finally, do minimal cleanup in the fall. Leave the leaves, dead stems and flower heads. Beneficial insects like miner bees lay eggs in hollow stems, finches will eat the echinacea seeds. Many butterflies and moths overwinter as pupae in dead leaves. Spring Blooming Golden-ragwort (Packera aurea) – mid to late Spring – Damp location, shade Grows freely and naturalizes into large colonies. Yellow flower heads, blooms for over 3 weeks in mide- to late spring. Dense ground cover. Prefers partial sun, medium shade. Prefers moist, swampy conditions. Cut back bloom stalks after flowering. Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea) – blooms May-June – prefers wet habitats but will tolerate dry Attractive bright yellow flower which occurs from May – June, looks like dill in shape. An excellent addition to a wildflower garden because it provides accessible nectar to many beneficial insects with short mouthparts during the spring and early summer when such flowers are relatively uncommon. -

Location of work: Santa Rosa Plain, Sonoma County, California 2. Background: Burke’s goldfield (Lasthenia burkei), a small, slender annual herb in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), is known only from southern portions of Lake and Mendocino counties and from northeastern Sonoma County. Historically, 39 populations were known from the Santa Rosa Plain, two sites in Lake County, and one site in Mendocino County. The occurrence in Mendocino County is most likely extirpated. From north to south on the Santa Rosa Plain, the species ranges from north of the community of Windsor to east of the city of Sebastopol. The long-term viability of many populations of Burke’s goldfields is particularly problematic due to population decline. There are currently 20 known extant populations, a subset of which were inoculated into pools at constructed sites to mitigate the loss of natural populations in the context of development.
