SPANISH IMMERSION In March, the Prime Stage Theater Company will put on a dramatic rendition of In the Time of the Butterflies, a work of historical fiction by Julia Alvarez. Her novel dramatizes the lives of the four Mirabal sisters during the time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. It is a bilingual play. On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, we will take a field trip to see In the Time of the Butterflies. After the play, we will go to Casa Reyna for lunch. The cost of this trip is $30. Check with Mrs. Lombardi to see if any spots remain. NASH students and staff have a unique opportunity to learn about the Mirabal sisters when we th host Minou Mirabal, the daughter of one of the “butterflies” on Friday, March 8 from 11:30 – 12:15 in the NASH Library Multipurpose Room. (That’s period 7/8). Join us to learn from Ms. Mirabal--a dynamic speaker, writer, and politician. Her presentation will cross curricular areas including history, Spanish language, politics, literature, and social justice issues. Please turn in a permission form to attend this lecture. THREE RIVERS GERMAN DAY This event will take place on March 7, 2019. Sign up with your German teacher. WRITING, ART, VIDEO, & PHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS AND OPPORTUNITIES The GOAL Office is a great hub for writers, artists, and creative people! We research and publicize all kinds of opportunities for you, and we support you in the writing process. We have flyers for current contests, and these flyers share specific details and deadlines. Calling all K-12 students--bring your creativity to life in a doodle of the Google logo, using any medium you choose. The winner’s artwork will be featured on the Google homepage, and several finalists will win some great scholarships. This year’s contest opens January 7, 2019. YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST 2018-19 This contest is in its 19th year, and we’ve had several winning playwrights over the years! This is a truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Students in grades 7 - 12 submit a one-act play by March 31, 2019. New this year! Every student who submits a play will receive written feedback from City Theatre’s Literary Committee, along with two free tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates regular season home game! Winning playwrights will have their plays produced as a part of the 2019 Young Playwrights Festival! Selected students will receive the unique opportunity of having professional actors, directors, designers, and dramaturgs collaborate with them to make their voices heard. There are 30 days in April. You’ll get a new prompt each day. Write 30 poems in one month--selecting the best to publish online or share with our group. Sign up in GOAL or at this link: https://goo.gl/forms/6bWoff3nPJXdXWwo2 2 15 MINUTES OF FAME Actors and singers are invited to audition for Prime Stage Theatre’s Annual Talent Competition and Showcase called “15 Minutes of Fame.” The auditions will be on Sunday, Feb 17th from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Prime Stage Studio at 840 Saw Mill Run Blvd., lower level, Pittsburgh, PA 15220. A panel of judges composed of Pittsburgh theater and music professionals will select singers and actors from three different age groups to perform in a talent showcase during the evening of Monday, March 11th at 7:00 PM at the New Hazlett Theater Center for the Performing Arts on the North Side. Finalists could receive a recording session and time with a casting agent. CLEVELAND CLINIC DISTANCE LEARNING SESSIONS Through videoconference and live streaming, you can meet with surgeons, professionals, and experts from The Cleveland Clinic for lectures, interactive discussions, and career exploration. If the topics or careers below interest you, then please stop in the GOAL office, sign up for a session, and pick up a permission form. PA COMPUTER FAIR (now called PA Media and Design Competition) The High School Computer Fair is an annual event that highlights students’ application skills and computer knowledge. Students unleash their creativity, learn how to convey information more dynamically, and enhance the learning process. Students must register WITH a GOAL teacher in 249A. There is no fee for this event. The Regional Computer Fair will be held on March 20, 2019 at the Heinz History Center. If you qualify for the state competition, you’ll need to provide your own transportation to Dickinson College on Tues. May 21, 2019 from 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Categories include 3D design, animation, digital movie, logo & graphic design, 3 programming, and web page design. Below is the information you need to register with a GOAL teacher: MATH TEAMS - TRAVEL We host schools from other teams on March 4. Would you like to try? Sign up in the GOAL office. You should be taking / have taken pre-calc or beyond before signing up for this. MATH TEAMS - MAIL IN Mail In Math will meet again on Tuesday, March 19. See Mrs. Volpe or Mr. Solenday to find out if you are eligible for extra credit -- but you are definitely eligible for the test either way. PITT HUMAN ENGINEERING RESEARCH Friday, March 29 at 1:30 PM (a no school day) interested students will be meeting at the University of Pittsburgh Human Engineering Research Lab for a tour. Students must provide their own transportation to this activity. The Pitt HERL mission is “to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and rehabilitation” by “creating a world where all people with disabilities have unencumbered mobility.” Permission slips are now available in the GOAL office; we are limited to 12 spaces. FAIRCHILD CHALLENGE: Video “Urban Garden Infomercial” For individuals or small groups (2-5 students). Entries will be considered for the Patti Burns 4 Prize for Excellence in Communication and Media but will not be awarded points towards the 2018-2019 Fairchild Challenge.
