Sobre todo, es conocido como el revisor y editor de la primera traducción castellana de la Biblia desde los originales. Fue condiscípulo de Arias Montano, mientras estudiaba en Sevilla. Al terminar seis años de estudios de Filosofía, y con el grado de Bachiller, ingresó en el Monasterio Jerónimo de San Isidoro del campo, próximo a Sevilla, desde el que huyó, con otros, en 1557, a Ginebra para librarse del Tribunal de la Inquisición, que llegó a quemarlo en efigie ("por luterano") en 1562 y le colocó en el "Índice de Libros Prohibidos", como autor de primera clase. De Ginebra pasó a Londres, al subir al trono Isabel I, y allí residió el resto de sus días, menos el tiempo que le llevó en Amsterdam la impresión de la segunda edición, notablemente revisada por él, de la traducción castellana de la Biblia, que había publicado su compatriota y compañero de monasterio Casiodoro de Reina, en Basilea (1569). En Inglaterra fundó una familia, enseñó en las universidades de Cambridge y Oxford y publicó varios libros. De sus obras originales, la primera que vió la luz fue Dos Tratados. El primero el del Papa y su de autoridad, colegido de su vida y doctrina, y de lo que los doctores y concilios antiguos y la misma Sagrada Escritura enseñan.

    't WERD KAMPEN door J. van Gelderen De Theologische School (1854-1864) Een verhaal gaat over een hoogleraar in Utrecht uit het midden van de vorige eeuw dat toen, ondanks zijn verzet, de student en maar bleven vragen om afschaffing van het latijn als voertaal op de colleges,hij hen plechtig aanzei, dat zij op de jongste dag rekenschap van hun handel• wijze zouden moeten geven. Hoe aardig het ook was dat de hoogge• leerde je aansprak met 'commilitones ornatissimi' (geachte strijdge• noten), toch merkte de student van dat 'medestrijders' niet veel meer dan het 'scribatis' (schrijf maar), gevolgd door een slaapverwekkend gedicteer uit een veelal vergeeld schriftje. De lange tijd, die het duurde voordat het latijn als taal der geleerden geheel bij het lesgeven was afgeschaft - in 1817 werd het eerste verzoekschrift tot afschaffing ingediend, in 1874 kwam er vergunningafvoortaan in het nederlands te promoveren - laat zien hoe behoudend de Universiteit kan zijn, hoe star haar tradities, ook al staat een nieuwe tijd te dringen. Tegen het midden van de vorige eeuw zijn er onmiskenbare tekenen dat een nieuwe tijd in aantocht is. Tussen neus en lippen door gezegd beleeft Nederland dan de overgangvan vroeg-naar modern-kapitalisme, Dat vooruitstrevende Hollanders - opgewekt uit brave middelmatigheid en zelfgenoegzame dommel - bijna zonder slag of stoot de liberale grondwet veroverden (1848) was daar een zeker teken van. Hier en daar brak het besef door dat de oude rijkdom bleek 'weggesmolten tot wijd• verspreide armoe' om een beeld van de historicus prof dr. L.J. Rogier te gebruiken, Rogier die de 1ge eeuw heeft getypeerd als de tijd van 'verscheurdheden', van tegenstellingen tussen Kerk en Staat, tussen Kapitaal en Arbeid, Geloof en Wetenschap, Kunst en Techniek.

    KWARTIERSTATENBOEK VAN DE AFDELING GOOI EN EEMLAND VAN DE NGV ter gelegenheid van het 40-jarig jubileum 1989 Voorwoord Op 30 maart 1989 bestond de afdeling Gooi en Eemland van de Nederland- se Genealogische Vereniging veertig jaar. Om enige kleur aan dit jubileum te geven, heeft het bestuur besloten om in het kader van dit jubileum eem kwartierstatenboek uit te geven. In dit boek staan de 31 kwartieren van een groot aantal leden van de afde- ling, die door deze leden de afgelopen jaren aan het bestuur gezonden zijn. De pretentie van dit boek is om aan de leden onderling te laten zien waar- mee men bezig is en niet het vormen van een genealogisch hoogstandje. Que es, LOS SACROS LIBROS DEL VIEIO Y NVEVO TESTAMENTO de Cipriano de Valera, impresa en Ámsterdam en la casa de Lorenço Iacobi el año 1602.
