In The Star, a naked maiden with long, flowing hair pours water from two pitchers. One stream of water flows to a pool. This signifies the stirring of new concepts and ideas. The other falls on the dry earth. In the background, a bird perches in a tree. Above the maiden, eight stars shine brightly. These are the stars of hope, ascending above her. The concept of "wishing upon a star" is the essence of The Star tarot card. The universe is not the unjust, senseless place it can sometimes appear to be. The Star tarot card tells us there is always something else, even when the going is tough. The Star can represent a gesture of goodwill and affection - possibly a gift. Her left hand is raised to signify recognition and generosity. She is a woman who has suffered great loss - possibly a widow or divorcee. This card is associated with materialism at its worst. The Devil symbolises tyranny of the senses and physical body. He is the bearer of the inevitable, often of misery and disaster. The Devil tarot card represents lust and greed - the refusal to value anything except pleasure for pleasure's sake. The Devil is ruled by the Capricorn zodiac sign. As with The Emperor tarot card, the High Priest is often representative of a paternal figure. The triple cross and three tiers of his crown represent the physical, intellectual and divine worlds. In Christian terms they represent the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. It is associated with comfort and forgiveness, the power of the conscious mind and the influence of established faith.
