Here in the heart of winter we welcome you, curious, thoughtful, excited and driven audiences, to experience illuminating stories from around the world. For Big Sky it is a transformative year as we welcome a guest programmer, settle the Institute in an exciting new home, and encounter a profound shift taking place in the modern canon of documentary film. As we enter a new decade we are thrilled to present nearly 150 extraordinary films that explore turning points, tipping points, colliding cultures, dubious power, human resilience, natural wonders and elder wisdom. This year we also welcome two teams of filmmakers for retrospective programs, place-based filmmaker duo Bill Ross and Turner Ross and celebrated documentary veterans Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert. These exciting programs capture a prodigious spectrum of American experience, rights for women and workers, and the remarkable 50-year career of Julia Reichert. We introduce a new event this year, the Big Sky Centerpiece, a mid-festival spotlight on a film at the heart of the festival, which this year will explore the great threat to our public lands. Big Sky artist programs continue to expand as we welcome eight talented artists in the 4th World Indigenous Media Lab and ten films from Indigenous directors and producers.

  • Evidence on the Impact of the Internet on Citizenship and Civic Engagement in the U.S
THE ELECTRONIC REPUBLIC?EVIDENCE ON THE IMPACT OF THE INTERNET ON CITIZENSHIP AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN THE U.S. PHILLIP J. VANFOSSEN Introduction In 1991, Lawrence Grossman wrote that "a new political system is taking shape in the United States. As we approach the twenty-first century, America is tUrning into an electronic republic, a democratic system that is vastly increasing the people's day-to-day influence on decisions of state."l Grossman's forecast implied a sea change in the way citizens would interact with, and participate in, their representative government; a revamping of the way Americans would 'do' citizenship. Thomas Johnson and Barbara Kaye echoing Grossman's forecast, reported that "Internet utopians, writing in advance of the 1996 presidential election, breath- lessly predicted the 'Net would transform the democratic process by both increasing the public's access to government officials and their power over them." Have these forecasts come to be? Has the United States-fueled by citizens' increasing access to the Internet-become an 'electronic republic'? This article will explore the literatUre in several areas (e.g., political science, civic education, social studies education, instructional technology) in order to summarize relevant research on the nature and degree of the Internet's impact on civic engagement and citizenship par- ticipation in the United States. The article will conclude with a re-exami- nation of Grossman's prediction. A Few WOrdsAbout 'CyberCitizenship'and the 'Digital Divide' It should be noted that

  • Kane on Trademark Law a Practitioner’S Guide Sixth Edition by Siegrun D
This is your Release #9 (June 2018) Kane on Trademark Law A Practitioner’s Guide Sixth Edition by Siegrun D. Kane (Kane Advisors LLP) In this release, Siegrun D. Kane updates the text and provides her expert analysis and practical insights regarding a wide range of crucial topics. High- lights of this release include: Product design trade dress and patent claims: In Poly-America, L.P. v. Illinois Tool Works Inc., the TTAB cancelled three trade dress registrations for colored lines at the top of plastic kitchen storage bags that plaintiff had claimed in an expired patent. The patent described the flange as being colored differently than the strips to facilitate identification of the flange and assist in separation of the strips; plaintiff later stated in advertising that the flange “immediately identifies the point of opening.” See § 3:2.1[E], at note 61, and illustration 54 at App. 18–57, depicting the bags. Grumpy cat: The licensees of trademarks related to an Internet icon were found to have violated the agreement when they started selling Grumppuccinos and other coffee products (Grumpy Cat Ltd. v. Grenade Beverage LLC). See § 5:1.7, at note 53. Trademark protection for colors: The yellow used on boxes of Cheerios was not protectable by trademark, according to the TTAB (In re General Mills IP Holdings II, LLC). See § 2:10.2[B], at note 136.1. And the protection granted to Louboutin’s red sole shoe in the United States apparently did not convince the European Court of Justice, which denied protection by holding that the red soles were not a separate entity from the shape of the high heels.
