The WACA receives distributions from the activities of cricket in Australia as part of its historical relationship with Cricket Australia (and previous names of that same governing entity it has been known as since its formation in 1905). Up until its October 2012 Annual General Meeting, Directors to the Board of Cricket Australia were Member based appointments from each State Association. The two appointees from Western Australia from 1 July 2012 until the time of the 2012 CA Annual General Meeting were Mr WJ Edwards and Mr DJ Williams. Changes to the Cricket Australia constitution enacted at its 2012 AGM, altered the size of the CA Board from 14 to 9 Directors, the first six of whom were nominated by each of the Member States. The remaining three Directors were appointed from the wider business community after the processes of a Nominations Committee. Mr Edwards was the nominee from Western Australia and he was subsequently elected Chairman of the CA Board until 2015. Their skipper, Justin Langer, had recently retired. A crucial part of Australia’s all-conquering side of the 2000s with 23 Test centuries, Langer was a legend of the game. He joined Somerset in 2006 and became club captain a year later. And he went on to have a wonderful career at Taunton. He scored more than 3,000 first-class runs for the club at an average of 51.23, including a record-breaking knock of 342 against Surrey in July 2006. It remains the highest first-class score by a Somerset player. Yet Langer was not just about the runs. Alongside director of cricket Brian Rose and head coach Andy Hurry, he transformed the club. Influenced by his time playing in one of cricket’s greatest teams, he made Somerset winners, instilling a culture of working tirelessly to become the best you can be. Under his leadership, they rose from the foot of the second tier in 2006 to third in Division One in 2009. The county also became a force in white-ball cricket, finishing as runners-up in the final edition of the Pro 40 17 KINGS IN WAITING League and losing the Twenty20 Cup Final to Sussex in 2009.

    HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 379 – March 2019 (1) MEETINGS NEXT MEETING – WEDNESDAY 27 MARCH 2019 The final meeting of the winter, at the Ageas Bowl, and at which the speaker is the former England player, CHRIS LEWIS, will start at 8.30 pm (instead of 8pm) to enable members of the Society to attend the Hampshire members’ AGM beforehand on the same evening. DAY AT THE CRICKET The Society’s Day at the Cricket, now an annual feature of our programme, will be held on Saturday 13 July, which is the first day of the Championship match against Kent. Wednesday 6 March 2019 – Meeting The Society is delighted to welcome CHARLOTTE EDWARDS to this evening’s meeting. Since the first Women’s Test in Brisbane in December 1934, England have produced a number of players who have entered the national consciousness (even if the public would not normally have recognised them). In the 1930s, there was Myrtle Maclagan, Molly Hide and Mary Duggan. There was then a gap until the 1960s when Rachael Heyhoe Flint became an iconic figure. Her career overlapped with that of Enid Bakewell, still England’s best all-rounder, in the next decade. Apart possibly from Flint, none enjoyed a higher profile than this evening’s speaker. For the best part of two decades Charlotte Edwards was the English game’s most emblematic figure: an inspiration to every budding young woman cricketer throughout the land. We know from the appearance of Charlie Dean and Emily Windsor last year that she was the cricketer that all young girls aspired to be.
