  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

Over the past seventeen years this format has grown leaps and bounds and is very keenly watched by all stakeholders involved with the game. The popularity and the growth of T20 has led to cricket boards taking this format with uttermost seriousness and every major cricket playing nation has its own international team and domestic league. Over the past seventeen years the strategies involved in succeeding in this format have also evolved and teams at the international, franchise and domestic level are trying to evolve their playbook to gain a comparative advantage. Seventeen years since T20 cricket started, preparation for matches globally have changed from casual chats in team meetings. For coaches and captains, dossiers of 25 pages are common; these dissect the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, suggest set-plays, which are the optimum ways that a bowler can set up a batsman, and explain the best parts of the ground to target and which end might suit each bowler best This research paper will delve into a potential winning strategy for a T20 side.

  • British Asians and the Myths of Yorkshire Cricket.I
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository “All Yorkshiremen are from Yorkshire, but some are more ‘Yorkshire’ than Others”: British Asians and the myths of Yorkshire cricket.i This paper explores the contemporary relationship between Yorkshire cricket and South Asian communities through oral testimonies with white and British Asian cricketers within the region. The paper documents how the myths and invented traditions surrounding Yorkshire as an insular county have extended to all levels of Yorkshire cricket culture. Evidence is presented to argue that, despite the growing representation of British Asians within the Yorkshire leagues and within the structure of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, cultural and institutionalised forms of racism continue to be intrinsic to the sport. The paper presents evidence to suggest that, regardless of being committed to Yorkshire and their ‘Yorkshireness’, white Yorkshire people may never fully accept British Asians as ‘one of us’. Finally, Yorkshire cricket’s (alleged) commitment to ‘colour-blindness’ is deconstructed by presenting evidence that British Asians continue to feel marginalised by, and on the fringe of, mainstream cricket culture in Yorkshire. Yorkshire and Yorkshire cricket: An introduction There exists in England a curious cult of Northern-ness, sort of Northern snobbishness. A Yorkshireman in the South will always take care to let you know that he regards you as an inferior … the North is inhabited by 'real' people … The Northerner has 'grit', he is grim, 'dour', plucky, warm-hearted, and democratic; the Southerner is snobbish, effeminate, and lazy - that at any rate is the theory.

Celebrating our students’ achievements and acknowledging their commitment to learning takes pride of place on our school calendar. This week is Book Week and, as is our custom, the Junior Campus staff and students enjoyed the opportunity to dress up as a book character to celebrate our love of reading and literature. Between thirty to forty senior campus students with a passion for writing participated in our annual Writers Workshop under the guidance of our teacher of English Ms Pippard and via skype with Eileen Chong who is a published poet. The genre is poetry and we again look forward to publishing the students’ poems in the Caroline Chisholm School Literary Journal 2015. It also gives me great pleasure to make special mention of 2 Junior Campus students who have been recognised this week for their outstanding commitment to reading: Congratulations Samantha Underwood and Cerys Wells from 1H on your 200 Nights of Reading Award.
