The objective of the environmental and social assessment is to examine the environmental, social, economic, physical, and biological impacts in the areas which may be affected by the project, and propose mitigation measures, as well as construction and operation environmental management and monitoring plans. This executive summary is intended to be a self-contained, stand-alone document that can be relied upon to provide major information necessary to understand the environmental and social sensitivities, potentially significant impacts, and mitigation measures to be undertaken under the proposed project. For further information on the ADP and for specific information and details not presented in depth in this summary, and particularly for a description of the existing social and ecological environment as well as relevant baseline data, the reader is referred to the main body of the Integrated Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Report (IESIA) and its associated documents, which include the Social Assessment (SA) report and the Resettlement Policy Framework (RPF). The Project is partly financed by the World Bank and as such will have to comply with World Bank guidelines relative to environmental and social safeguard policies as well as Government of Arab Republic of Egypt applicable laws and regulations. The IESIA report was prepared by an Egyptian Independent Consulting Firm (North South Consultant Exchange) in collaboration with an international firm (Haskoning Netherland BV). The names of the experts in these firms that participated in the preparation of the IESIA report are listed in Annex 1. Introduction Alexandria is one of the oldest cities in the world.
