2010 Schedule and Results LAST WEEK: at Northwest (W 3-1), at Evergreen State (W 3-0)

Date Opponent Time/Result COMING UP: vs. No. 12 Southern Oregon, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. Oregon Tech, Saturday, 7 p.m.

8/27 ! Azusa Pacific L 3-0 LIVE STATS / LIVE VIDEO: Both weekend matches with Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech will have ! Westminster L 3-2 Live Video and Live Stats available for fans at home. Westminster W 3-1 accessed online at http://yotestats.i8.com/vball/xlive.htm. ! Azusa Pacific L 3-0 CLASH OF TITANS IN CALDWELL: To say that Friday’s Cascade Conference match-up between 9/3 * NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN W 3-0 the Lady Yotes and Southern Oregon is huge – might be an understatement. The two schools have 9/4 * CORBAN W 3-0 combined to win the last seven CCC titles and are the only two CCC schools to advance to the NAIA 9/10 * Oregon Tech W 3-0 National Tournament in the last decade (SOU in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009; C of I in 2005, 2006, 2008, 9/11 * Southern Oregon L 3-0 2009) – with the sides combining for a 241-68 record (C of I 127-33, SOU 114-35) over the last five years, including a 171-17 record in the CCC (C of I 86-8, SOU 85-9). 9/17 * WARNER PACIFIC W 3-0

9/18 * CONCORDIA W 3-0 BEST VOLLEYBALL RIVALRY IN NORTHWEST?: The Lady Yote-Raider volleyball match has been 9/21 Northwest Nazarene W 3-0 one of the top tickets in small-college volleyball in the Northwest, as evident by the over 1,000 fans that 9/24 * EASTERN OREGON W 3-2 have watched the match in Ashland, and the over 500 fans that have witnessed the last four meetings in 10/1 * Northwest W 3-1 Caldwell. Winning on the others’ home court has been a tough thing for the opposition, as The C of I last won a match at McNeal Pavilion (SOU’s home) in 2006, while Southern has not defeated the Yotes in 10/2 * Evergreen State W 3-0 Caldwell since 2005 – including playoff losses in 2006, 2008, and 2009. 10/8 * SOUTHERN OREGON 7 p.m. 10/9 * OREGON TECH 7 p.m. TITLE HOPES REST WITH WIN: If the Coyotes are to contend for their fifth-straight CCC title, a 10/15 * Corban 7 p.m. PT victory is imperative on Friday night – with a straight-set win even more important. The C of I currently sits a game back of Southern in the loop standings – the difference, SOU’s three-set sweep of the Lady 10/16 * Northwest Christian 7 p.m. PT Yotes in September. A win by The C of I would tie the two teams in the standings, however, if the 10/19 NORTHWEST NAZARENE 7 p.m. Coyotes do not win in three sets, Southern would claim all tiebreakers in the event of a tie in the standings 10/22 * EVERGREEN STATE 7 p.m. – as the third tie-break is sets won among tied teams. If the Coyote do win in three, the next tiebreak 10/23 * NORTHWEST 7 p.m. would be sets won vs. sets lost among all CCC teams (SOU currently holds a four-set edge in the 10/29 * Eastern Oregon 7 p.m. PT category).

11/5 * Concordia 7 p.m. PT THE HIGH-FLYING RAIDERS: Southern (12-2, 9-0 CCC) is a potent team, led by All-America setter 11/6 * Warner Pacific 7 p.m. PT Lindsey Stone (10.49 a/s, 1.54 d/s), the CCC’s leader in assists. Josh Rohlfing’s bunch has a multi-faced 11/9 CCC Tournament (Qtrs) TBA attack, paced by Sarah Holgen (3.91 k/s, 2.93 d/s, .265 attack percentage), the CCC’s leading hiter, blocker 11/12-13 CCC Tournament (Finals) TBA Megan Bartling (2.70 k/s, 1.07 b/s, .308 attack percentage), and outside hitter Leanne Stennett (2.31 k/s, 11/20 NAIA Opening Round TBA 3.55 d/s). It is the 75th meeting between the teams, with the Raiders holding a 55-19 all-time series edge.

11/30-12/4 NAIA Tournament TBA CAN THE WIN STREAK REACH 50?: On the line Friday night is the Lady Yotes 49-match Home Games in Bold and CAPS conference home win streak – a record that stretches back to the 2005 season. In 2009, The C of I ! NAIA Tournament of Champions notched their fourth-straight perfect season in conference play at home – having not lost a league tilt at * Cascade Conference Match home since September of 2005, recording an undefeated mark at home each of the last three seasons (9-0 in 2006 and 2009 and 10-0 in both 2007 and 2008). Overall, the Yotes have won 64 of their last 65 home

matches – and have an all-time record of 155-37 in the facility, including a 103-13 record in the Activities Center under head coach Liz Mendiola. A year ago, The C of I and SOU played a five-set thriller in the

regular-season, one of only three five-set matches at home during the current streak. Cascade Conference Standings DON’T FORGET ABOUT OREGON TECH: Also headed to the Gem State this weekend is Oregon Tech, looking to break out of a slump in which the Owls (10-11, 2-7) have lost 4-of-5 and six of their last School CCC Overall eight matches. OIT is led offensively by Megan Christensen (.267 k/s, 1.28 d/s, 0.67 b/s) and Mikayla Southern Oregon 9- 0 12- 2 Morgan (1.91 k/s, 0.88 b/s), with Sarah Svedin running the attack (6.15 a/s, 2.09 d/s), and Hannah Brewster College of Idaho 8- 1 11- 4 (3.91 d/s) leading the defense. It is the 53rd meeting between the teams, with the Lady Yotes holding a 34- Concordia 7- 2 12- 6 18 all-time series lead.

Northwest 5- 4 10- 6 SINGLE-POINT SETS: With the 25-5 victory in Set 2 on Saturday vs. Evergreen State, it marked the Eastern Oregon 5- 4 9- 6 second time in 2010 that the Lady Yotes had held an opponent to fewer than ten points in a set. Since Corban 4- 5 6- 5 collegiate volleyball went to rally-scoring in 2001, The C of I has held an opponent to single-digits in a set Oregon Tech 2- 7 10-11 (not including a fifth-set) on 17 occasions – including seven times during the 2009 season. It was the Warner Pacific 2- 7 4-11 second time that the Coyotes have held a team to five points, while they have held a team to six points four times. Conversely, the fewest points scored by the Lady Yotes in a rally-scoring set is 11, against Biola Evergreen State 2- 7 3-10 in 2007. Northwest Christian 1- 8 5-12 - more -

C OF I RANKED NO. 17 IN LATEST NAIA POLL: The C of I remained at No. 17 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll for the third-straight week, released by the national office in Kansas City, Mo. The Lady Yotes received 309 voter points in the poll, the 61st-straight week that the squad has received votes in the national poll. GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, NORTHWEST 1: Ciciley Fox had 20 of 64 total kills by The C of I, as the Lady Yotes ran their win streak to five with a 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22 victory at Northwest University, Friday in Kirkland, Wash. Set 1 saw the Lady Yotes break an early 8-8 tie with five consecutive kills from senior Sarah Harris, to earn a 1-0 set lead. In Set 2, The C of I used a six-point push midway through the frame to grab a 16-15 lead, but NU responded, taking advantage of four Coyote hitting errors and two ball handling miscues to even the match. Fox took control in Set 3 for the Yotes, smashing seven kills in the period, to put C of I back on top, while in the clincher, the Coyotes jumped out to a 9-3 lead to claim the match. Fox added nine digs and three blocks in the win, with Harris adding 12 kills and five blocks and Lauren Bourgeau providing 11 kills for The C of I. Both setters logged double-doubles, with Madie Machurek recording 31 assists and 13 dig, and Naomi Reimer logged 15 assists and 12 digs. Whitney Owen led the Yotes with 22 digs, with freshman Janel Porter (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) recording a career-high 18 digs. The Eagles got ten kills and 13 digs from hitter Anu Akamine, while setter Lauryn Ernster had 23 assists and 11 digs. Blocker Sarah Stoker had just two kills, but led all players with 12 blocks, while libero Heather Shulke notched 21 digs.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, EVERGREEN STATE 0: Forcing 27 hitting errors and recording a season-high eight aces, The C of I ran their win streak to six games with a 25-21, 25-5, 25-11 victory over The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. The Coyotes used a five-point push in Set 1 to erase an Evergreen 8- 7 lead – started by a combo block from Liz Myers and Madison Curtis and aided by a pair of Geoduck hitting errors. The hosts would get within 24-21 on the strength of three-straight Yote miscues, but The C of I closed out the opener, thanks to a ball handling error by Caitlin Swift. Set 2 was all Lady Yotes, as The C of I tied a school record for the fewest points allowed in a rally-scoring set. Lauren Bourgeau had four kills in a 9-0 run early in the period that got the lead out to 13-3, then saw the squad score the final 11 points on the serve of Naomi Reimer, who logged four aces in the run. Sarah Harris set the tone in the final set, smashing three kills in a 10-1 run to open the period, as the Coyotes defeated the Geoducks (3-8, 2-7) for the 13th straight time. Bourgeau led the Coyote attack with nine kills, with Harris adding eight kills and four blocks. Madie Machurek had 18 assists in the win, Myers had a match-high seven blocks, and Whitney Owen recorded a match- high 19 digs. The Geoducks were led by seven kills from Jasmine Horton, while the Yotes limited ESC’s top hitter, Jazzmin Garcia, to just one kill. Erin Mitchell recorded a team-high 18 assists and Chantal Petkus had 14 digs in the loss.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her tenth season as The C of I head volleyball coach. During her first nine seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to eight consecutive CCC tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Last season, the squad won their fourth-straight CCC title, claimed their fourth-straight CCC Tournament title, and advanced to the NAIA Tournament Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa (where they finished in a tie for ninth) – with Mendiola earning her fourth-straight CCC Coach of the Year honors, while being ranked as high as No. 6 in the national poll. During her career, she has amassed a record of 222-82, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history. In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors. The Yotes won their first CCC championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss. The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships – with that team setting a school-record with 22 straight wins. Her 2010 club will take a 44-match CCC home win streak into the season and have won 61 of their last 62 home matches. Mendiola was an assistant for the Coyotes on two separate occasions – from 1995-96 and from 1999-2000, before elevating to head coach. She has also coached club volleyball at Emmett High, for the Treasure Valley Volleyball Club, the Boise River Volleyball Club, and various camps in the Northwest. A native of Jerome, Mendiola graduated from The C of I in 1996 with a degree in elementary education, and taught kindergarten in Nampa before becoming head coach in 2001. A two-year member of the Coyotes, Mendiola set school records for kills per game (4.86) in 1994, and holds the school mark for kills per game in a career (4.46). She earned All-CCC honors following her senior season with the Yotes. Mendiola is married to former Coyote baseball standout and current C of I softball coach Al Mendiola. GAME RECAP – CONCORDIA 2, C OF I 0: A pair of first-half goals proved to be the difference, as Concordia University remained unbeaten in CCC play, blanking The C of I, 2-0, at Delta Park on Friday night. In a game that featured 32 fouls, a Matt Caniglia goal in the 15th minute proved to be the winner for the Cavaliers, who won their eighth-straight game. The Cavs added to the margin in the 36th minute, as Jordan Correa scored on a feed from Facundo Dipascuale. CU could have added to the lead, but shots by Jared Brace and Logan Sanchez clanged off the cross bar. The had their opportunities, recording 15 shots on the night - but Cavalier keeper, Claudio Lazar made seven saves to notch the shutout - his fifth-straight to open the conference season.

GAME RECAP – CORBAN 2, C OF I 1: Gus Bermudez knocked home the game winner in the 62nd minute and Corban University’s defense withstood a C of I offensive onslaught late, as the Warriors toppled the Coyotes, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in Salem, Ore. After the two teams battled to a 1-1 deadlock in the opening half, the Warriors nearly took the lead in the 60th minute on a Bermudez header that was redirected over the crossbar by C of I keeper Aaron Reynolds. However, two minutes later, CU keeper James Myrvold played a ball upfield to the waiting Peter Martin, who found Bermudez alone for a rolling shot into the right corner for the game-winner. The Coyotes would pepper the goal throughout the second half – holding a 12-5 shot edge in the stanza, but couldn’t crack Myrvold, who made six saves for the victory. However, it was a team save inside the final five minutes on a Matt Kelly (Klamath Falls, Ore. / Henley HS) header that secured the win – as Ruben Lopez cleared the shot off the goal line. The Yotes jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, as Stephen Frandin headed home a cross from Brad Byers into the lower right corner of the net. However, Corban came back in the 27th minute, as Bermudez was fouled in the box, with Aaron Kinnes knocking home the penalty kick to tie the score. Overall, the Coyotes had a 19-9 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks, but mustered just the one goal.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith is in his seventh season as head coach at The C of I. During his tenure, the Coyotes have posted a 65-43-5 overall record, including CCC co-championships in 2006 and 2008, earning him CCC Coach of the Year honors on both occasions. His clubs have won at least nine games in five of his six seasons, while his 2008 squad became just the second CCC school to complete an unbeaten, untied conference slate, and set a school record with 13 consecutive wins. Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley. He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club, the Les Bois United Soccer Club, and with the Idaho Olympic Development Program - currently serving as a team coach with FC Nova.
