ALWAYS TOUGH IN THE EAGLES LAIR: The Lady Yotes open up a weekend road swing through the Seattle metro area with a Friday night match at Northwest. The Eagles (9-5, 4-3 CCC) Cascade Conference Standings have played well this season, though it will be just their third match in the tiny Northwest Pavilion,

the loud homecourt of the Eagles. NU is led by the tandem of Lauren Holtz (2.63 k/s, 3.12 d/s) and School CCC Overall Anu Akamine (2.45 k/s, 2.88 d/s), with setter Lauryn Ernster (8.39 a/s, 2.41 d/s) running the offense, Southern Oregon 8- 0 11- 2 and libero Heather Shulke (5.10 d/s) among the top defenders in the league. Northwest 4- 3 9- 5 MUCH IMPROVED EVERGREEN SQUAD: It is safe to say that Saturday’s opponent, Eastern Oregon 4- 3 8- 5 Evergreen State, is the surprise of the CCC, as the Geoducks (3-8, 2-5) have nearly surpassed Corban 3- 4 5- 4 their win total from the last three seasons combined (ESC was 5-69 between 2007-09). GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, EASTERN OREGON 2: Sarah Harris had a career-high 24 kills, as The C of I withstood an outstanding effort from Eastern Oregon, defeating the Mountaineers 19-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11, before over 500 boisterous fans in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center on Friday night. The No. 17 ranked Lady Yotes were able to keep a pair of long win streaks intact - defeating EOU for the 32nd-straight time, while winning their 49th -straight Cascade Conference home game. Set 1 saw Eastern use an 8-1 push early in the frame to take a 10-4 lead, including a pair of kills from Irene Walters. The C of I got within 20-17 on a Harris kill, but back-to-back kills from Walters and Katie Shower, gave EOU the early edge. Set 2 was all C of I, sprinting out to an 11-4 lead and never saw their opponent get closer than three points. The Mounties never trailed in Set 3, though the Yotes clawed within one point on 12 separate occasions, but could not get over the hump. EOU had a chance to close out the match in Set 4, as a combo-block from Shower and Alisha Crane gave the visitors a 19-15 lead, but the Coyotes responded with an 8-1 push, keyed by a pair of blocks and three Eastern hitting errors, with another block evening the match at 2-2. In the clincher, the Coyotes took an early 3-0, only to watch EOU even the score at 9-9 on a Kaitlyn Duncan ace. However, kills by Lauren Bourgeau (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Harris gave The C of I a lead it wouldn't relinquish, with a Naomi Reimer ace ending the match. Harris had seven digs and a pair of blocks in her big performance, with Ciciley Fox (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) adding 13 kills and seven digs. Newcomer Danielle Montalbo (Mountain Home, Idaho / College of Southern Idaho) had a career-high eight kills, with Bourgeau adding nine kills and six blocks. Madie Machurek had 30 assists and 14 digs, while Reimer had 23 assists and seven digs. Whitney Owen led all players with 39 digs - one of four players with double-digit digs. EOU had a monster night from Walters, who finished with 17 kills and 15 digs, with Showers adding 11 kills and five blocks. Jessica Lea had eight kills 24 assists, and 16 digs, with fellow setter, Emily Sampson logging 19 assists and 12, while Duncan had a Mountie team-high 28 digs.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her tenth season as The C of I head volleyball coach. During her first nine seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to eight consecutive CCC tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Last season, the squad won their fourth-straight CCC title, claimed their fourth-straight CCC Tournament title, and advanced to the NAIA Tournament Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa (where they finished in a tie for ninth) – with Mendiola earning her fourth-straight CCC Coach of the Year honors, while being ranked as high as No. 6 in the national poll. During her career, she has amassed a record of 220-82, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history. In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors. The Yotes won their first CCC championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss. The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second- straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships – with that team setting a school-record with 22 straight wins. Her 2010 club will take a 44-match CCC home win streak into the season and have won 61 of their last 62 home matches. Mendiola was an assistant for the Coyotes on two separate occasions – from 1995-96 and from 1999-2000, before elevating to head coach. She has also coached club volleyball at Emmett High, for the Treasure Valley Volleyball Club, the Boise River Volleyball Club, and various camps in the Northwest. A native of Jerome, Mendiola graduated from The C of I in 1996 with a degree in elementary education, and taught kindergarten in Nampa before becoming head coach in 2001. A two-year member of the Coyotes, Mendiola set school records for kills per game (4.86) in 1994, and holds the school mark for kills per game in a career (4.46). She earned All-CCC honors following her senior season with the Yotes. Mendiola is married to former Coyote baseball standout and current C of I softball coach Al Mendiola. The Mendiola’s have two children, Aleah and Micah.

GAME RECAP – WESTMINSTER 1, C OF I 0: Jessie Harris scored the game's lone goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half, as Westminster College defeated The C of I, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Simplot Stadium. After the hosts dominated the first 25 minutes – but unable to score, Westminster persevered, as Harris knocked home a rebound off the crossbar from Heather Hillam with 30 seconds left in the period, slotting the ball underneath C of I keeper Melissa Holmes (Antioch, Calif. / Antioch Senior HS), for the game-winner for the visiting Griffins. The Lady Yotes had chances in the second half, but breakaway attempts from both Erika Mouritsen (Wellsville, Utah / Dixie State Coll.) and Macy Egerman (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) missed the target, as Lindsay Bekken recorded her seventh shutout of the season. The C of I had a 14-9 edge in total shots – but struggled against an offsides trap that Westminster employed throughout the match. Bekken was solid in goal, making six saves on the afternoon.
