GAME RECAP – SOUTHERN OREGON 3, C OF I 2: Emma Gasman had 18 kills and five blocks helping Southern Oregon survive a tough five-set marathon over the C of I, Friday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. The win for the No. 13 ranked Raiders was their second-straight five-set win at C of I. Southern never trailed in the decisive fifth set, as both teams trade four-point rallies to open the period. The Raiders would build a 14-12 lead on a double contact call – but the Lady Yotes fought off four match points, before a net violation broke a 16-16 tie and a Sam Boehnke kill after a long rally, ended the match. Gasman was dominant in the first two sets, as SOU built an early lead. The opening period featured 12 ties, the last at 22-22, before a Motade Atanda kill, a Lauren McGowne-Gasman combo-block, and a Gasman spike gave the Raiders the win. Set 2 was back-and-forth, as Southern got three Atande kills in an opening 10-4 run, only to watch C of I storm back to grab a 17-16 lead on an Emily Ottinger stuff of an overpass. The Raiders tightened up their block, stuffing a pair of Coyote attacks in a four-point run that gave them the lead for good. The Lady Yotes got into system in Set 3, as Bailee Kendall (Mount Pleasant, Utah / Salt Lake CC) and Janessa Koelliker (Kaysville, Utah / Salt Lake CC) each had four kills in the period, as C of I used a 7-1 run to take a 13-6 lead and never looked back. Ottinger was dominant in Set 4, recording seven kills, including a smash in a three-point run that broke a 22-22 tie to force the fifth set. Atanda had 16 kills and 15 digs for SOU, with Boehnke adding 12 kills and Paulla Pinheiro registering 11 kills and a team-high 26 digs. McGowne led the Raiders with 56 assists in the win. Ottinger led all players with 20 kills, with Kendall adding 13 kills and four blocks. Koelliker had a season-high 12 kills and five blocks for the Yotes; Katy Robinson (Kimberly, Idaho / Kimberly HS) had 12 kills; Sierra Porter had 57 assists; and Kilee Lopez was one of four C of I players in double-figure digs, recording 35.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 3, OREGON TECH 0: Emily Ottinger led the way on her Senior Night with 10 kills, helping the C of I cruise past Oregon Tech 25-16, 25- 22, 25-17, Saturday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. Ottinger, the lone senior on the Lady Yotes squad, added two of C of I's six aces, while helping force the visitors into 24 hitting errors on the night. C of I never trailed in Set 1, sprinting to a 9-3 lead, extending the margin to 17-9 on a Bailee Kendall kill. The Owls got back-to-back aces from Jennifer Lakin to cut the gap to 20-16, but could not get closer. OIT held an 8-7 lead in Set 2, only to watch the Yotes force five errors in a 10-2 run to take a 17-10 lead. Kelsey Sampson led a spirited Owls rally, spiking consecutive kills to get the visitors within 21-20, but a Kendall kill and an Ottinger ace, ended the threat. Set 3 was tight through 20 serves, but C of I forced six Tech hitting miscues in rattling off 8-of-9 points, taking an 18-10 lead en route to closing out the match. Kendall had eight kills, Kylie Porter had six kills, and Katy Robinson added five kills for C of I. Sierra Porter logged 28 assists, with libero Kilee Lopez leading the team with 15 digs. Whitney Webster had eight kills to lead OIT, with Sampson recording seven kills and 12 digs. Both Tori Porter and Waverly Green had 15 assists, with Brooke Malloy adding 15 digs.

School CCC Overall ABOUT THE SHOOT-OUT: This weekend marks the 28th edition of the newly sponsored Taco Bell Shoot- Southern Oregon 0-0 3-0 Out, tabbed over the years as the “Premier Small College Tournament in the West. Originally started in College of Idaho 0-0 2-0 1987 as the Golden Rule Shoot-Out by Duane Wolfe and the Golden Rule Auto Dealers, the tournament Concordia 0-0 2-0 continued for years as the Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shoot-Out after his passing in 1993. This Northwest 0-0 2-0 season, Taco Bell has kept the tradition going as the title sponsor of the Shoot-Out. A total of 35 different Oregon Tech 0-0 2-0 teams have played in the tournament from 1987-2013, which has seen six different champions – Eastern Oregon makes their fifth appearance; Walla Walla appears for the fourth-straight year; and Arizona Warner Pacific 0-0 2-0 Christian heads to the tournament for the first time. Seven CCC squads have played in the event (Oregon Corban 0-0 1-0 Tech, Corban, Concordia, Northwest, Warner Pacific, Evergreen, and Eastern Oregon) – as only Southern Northwest Christian 0-0 1-0 Oregon and Northwest Christian hasn't made a tourney appearance. MEET THE FIRESTORM: C of I will open the Taco Bell Shoot-Out against Arizona Christian, the No.17 team in the NAIA Division I poll. Based out of Phoenix, the Firestorm (1-0) opened the young season with a 103-86 victory over No. 23 ranked St. Xavier (Ill.). Brandon Newman led ACU with 32 points and two assists in the win. On paper, the Yotes have a height advantage over ACU as the Firestorm have no players on their roster over six-foot, eight-inches, but they bring back a lot of experience from last year’s NAIA National Tournament team that finished the season 23-7. ACU also recorded a 4-0 record against non-conference teams on the road in 2013-14. The meeting will mark the first time the two schools battle on the hardwood.

MEET THE WOLVES, AGAIN: The Yotes will close out the Taco Bell Shoot-Out against Walla Walla, the same squad the Yotes toppled at the Quinn Classic last week. The Wolves (0-4) are still searching for their first win, averaging just 59 points per contest. The Wolves are a young team, with just two seniors, and may have trouble inside against a big C of I squad, as WWU has two players on their roster over six-foot, six-inches. Returning guard Tyreek Luckett (14.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is a two-year starter, as is forward Luke Spady (11.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg). The meeting will be the ninth time the two programs have hooked up with the Yotes coming away victorious in each of the bouts so far.

OPENING DAY WIN: Josh Wilson had 18 points and flirted with a triple-double as the Yotes opened their 2014-15 season with a 89-71 win over Walla Walla in the first game of the 2014 Aramark Quinn Classic hosted by Eastern Oregon. Tied at 25 with 5:15 left in the first half, Jordan O’Byrne (Lompoc, Calif. / Hancock CC) drilled a three to start a 19-8 run to close the period and grab control of the game. Wilson scored a team-high 18 points with eight assists, seven boards, four steals, and one block. O’Byrne came off the bench to hit a team-high four three-pointers to go with his 16 points and six rebounds. Led by a game-high 20 points from Luke Spady, the Wolves hung around early but shot 31-percent in the second half, including a 14-percent from behind the arc to fall into a hole they were unable to dig out of. Marco Kovacevic hit a jumper with 5:05 left in the game to give the Coyotes their largest lead of the game at 83-56. Against C of I reserves, Walla Walla would cut the deficit to 16 in the final minute.

TWO -FOR-TWO: Joey Nebeker led five C of I players in double-figures with 15 points, as the Coyotes rolled to a 95-55 victory over Portland Bible to close out the Quinn Classic. The Yotes bolted out to a 14-1 lead in the first four minutes to win back-to-back games to start a season for the first time since 2006-07. Demetrius Perkins (Compton, Calif. / Glendale CC) scored seven of his 10 points in the opening run, including an alley-oop dunk on the first C of I possession, as the Yotes lead never fell below double-digits. C of I led 47-27 at the half, with Nebeker fueling a 21-4 run early in the second half with three baskets and a pair of free throws, as C of I took a 78-10 lead with nine minutes to play. Bryce Layne led the Wildcats with 13 points and three assists.

YOTES NO. 7 IN PRESEASON NAIA NATIONAL POLL: The Coyotes were voted No. 7 in the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Oct. 28 by the national office. The ranking is the highest a C of I team has begun a season since the 2009-10 team opened No. 8. The Coyotes started last season outside the Top-25 and did not crack the poll until Jan. 7, eventually climbing up to the No. 2 position in the final regular season poll. "We are very excited that the national raters recognize our program as one of the elite in the NAIA," head coach Scott Garson said. "Preseason rankings do not mean a whole lot, but this confirms that we will have a target on our back throughout the season with every opponent that we face." C of I will face some stiff competition in the coming months, playing a combined five ranked teams in the NAIA Division I and NAIA Division II preseason polls, including a bout against the NAIA Division I 2013-14 National Champion and preseason No. 1, Vanguard University. Two other Cascade Conference foes cracked the NAIA Division II poll – Southern Oregon at No. 17 and Concordia at No. 25.

ABOUT THE COACH: Scott Garson is in his second season the Coyotes head coach. During his rookie season, Garson led the Yotes to a 28-6 record, climbing to No. 2 in the NAIA Division II Top-25 poll, winning both the CCC regular-season and tournament titles – advancing to the NAIA Division II National Championships. For his efforts, he was named CCC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Don Meyer NAIA Coach of the Year and the Jewish Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year awards. The native of Calabasas, Calif., was an assistant for Ben Howland at UCLA from 2006-13, serving two prior seasons as the Bruins video coordinator. Garson was responsible for the development of perimeter players – including current NBA stars, Russell Westbrook, Arron Afflalo, Darren Collison, Kevin Love, and Jrue Holiday. Garson also was responsible for the recruitment of Zach LaVine, the 13th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. During Garson’s tenure at UCLA, the Bruins amassed a record of 222-90, including Pac-10 titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, a Pac-12 title in 2013, as well as Pac-10 Tournament titles in 2006 and 2008. The Bruins qualified for six NCAA National Tournaments and made trips to the Final Four in 2006, 2007 and 2008 – reaching the national championship game in 2006. Garson was instrumental in the recruiting efforts for the Bruins, who claimed ESPN’s No. 1 recruiting class in both 2008 and 2012. A total of 15 players recruited or coached by Garson have been selected in the NBA Draft. The 38-year-old served as the video coordinator at Pepperdine University for one year before spending five seasons at the University of Utah under hall-of-fame coach and mentor, Rick Majerus. Garson was a graduate assistant for three seasons, video coordinator for one and assistant coach for another as the Utes won three titles and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament four times. Garson played one season of college basketball and baseball at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., before transferring to UC-Santa Barbara, where he earned a bachelor of arts in law and society. While at Utah, he received a master of science in exercise and sports science, with an emphasis in sport psychology.

Brittany Wirth canned a pair of three's and Jones had a lay-up, as C of I took a 14-13 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half. Back-to-back Hattie Thatcher baskets started the big Digger run, with Machinal and Martha Dembek hitting three's for MT, as the hosts pushed the lead to 44-28 at the half. MT extended the margin to 58-35 with 13 minutes remaining, but the Coyotes rattled off seven-straight points, capped by a Jones jumper, to get within 16. DeWitt answered with a three-point play, and Tech was never threatened again.
