Best of the Waitresses gives a good career overview of the band, collecting the bulk of the high points from their two albums, of course including the unforgettable "I Know What Boys Like," as well as some fun non-LP cuts like "Square Pegs" (the theme from the "valley girl" TV show Square Pegs) and the holiday rap "Christmas Wrapping." Best of the Waitresses offers ample proof that the band deserved more than one-hit wonder status, although this collection is probably all that most people need. The more ambitious should add the King Biscuit Flower Hour disc for a sampling of the band's truly inspired live shows. The best of the waitresses download album rar. The Waitresses was an experimental New Wave band from Akron, Ohio. The group was led by guitarist/songwriter Chris Butler with lead vocals performed by Patty Donahue. They were best known in the UK for the song "Christmas Wrapping", which still gets airtime on the radio every Christmas. In the USA they had minor success with the song "I Know What Boys Like," from their 1982 debut album Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful . "I Know What Boys Like" was originally released as a single in 1980 but did not chart. In 1982 the song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100, #23 on Billboard' s Top Tracks chart and #14 on the Australian Singles Chart (Kent Music Report). The Waitresses also recorded the theme song to the television program Square Pegs which aired during the 1982–1983 season. Their new wave Christmas song "Christmas Wrapping" was originally released on the ZE Records album A Christmas Record in 1981, and became a #45 hit in the United Kingdom in 1982. The song was subsequently covered by the Spice Girls in 1998, as the B-side of their single "Goodbye". Butler's diverse musical interests are apparent from the use of prepared piano on "No Guilt," microtonal background vocals on the chorus of "Wise Up," tape loops and short wave receiver on "Jimmy Tomorrow," and the title of "Make the Weather" (taken from Hugo Ball's autobiography Flight Out of Time ). Saxophonist and reed player Mars Williams had also worked as Anthony Braxton's copyist. The band's lead singer Patty Donahue left in summer 1984 and was briefly replaced by Holly Beth Vincent. Vincent left the band two weeks later, and Donahue later came back. The band finally split up in late 1984 after the departures of Carney and Klayman. After the group's break up, talks of reunions took place. However, in 1996 lead singer Patty Donahue died of lung cancer at age 40 so the idea of reuniting came to an end. Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? (1982) Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? is The Waitresses' debut album, released on January 11, 1982 originally on ZE Records and subsequently licensed by Polydor . The album peaked at # 41 in the Billboard chart and included the earlier single "I Know What Boys Like." The only single taken from this album was I Know What Boys Like, which charted to #62 in the U.S. 1-) No Guilt. 2-) Wise Up. 3-) Quit. 4-) It's My Car. 5-) Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? 6-) I Know What Boys Like. 7-) Heat Night. 8-) Redland. 9-) Pussy Strut. 10-) Go On. 11-) Jimmy Tomorrow. Bruiseology is the second and last studio album by The Waitresses, released in May, 1983. The album became a flop and they disbanded a year later. The album charted to #155 in the U.S and once again just one single was taken from this album and that was Make the Weather. Stream Top Podcasts. If you can never get enough true crime. I’m Glennon Doyle, author of Untamed – the book that was released at the very start of the pandemic and became a lifeline for millions. I watched in awe from my home while this simple phrase from Untamed – WE CAN DO HARD THINGS – the mantra that saved my life twenty years ago, became a worldwide rally cry. Because we experienced the hardship of the pandemic collectively, many of us finally acknowledged what was true before COVID and will be true after: That life is freaking HARD. We are all doing hard things every single day – things like loving and losing caring for children and parents; forging and ending friendships; battling addiction, illness, and loneliness; struggling in our jobs, our marriages, and our divorces; setting boundaries; and fighting for equality, purpose, freedom, joy, and peace. On We Can Do Hard Things, my sister Amanda and I will do the only thing I’ve found that has ever made life easier: We will drop the fake and talk honestly about the hard. Each week we will bring our hard to you and we will ask you to bring your hard to us and we will do what we were all meant to do down here: Help each other carry the hard so we can all live a little bit lighter and braver, more free and less alone..

  • Edgy Music Gives Akron Fringe Status Page 1 of 2
Edgy music gives Akron fringe status Page 1 of 2 Posted on Thu, Jun. 10, 2004 Edgy music gives Akron fringe status By David Giffels When the body of Robert Quine was discovered last weekend in his New York City apartment, he became the first of a puzzling subgeneration of Akron-born artists to pass into the great beyond. At 61, he was the elder statesman of an absurdly brilliant bunch, all born roughly between 1945 and 1950, who collectively represent the city's most noteworthy contributions to art and pop culture. Most of their eventual obituaries will include the adjectives that apply to Quine: iconoclastic, adventurous and influential. In music, there are the Mothersbaugh and Casale brothers, who formed Devo and now make soundtracks and commercials. There is Tin Huey, which spewed out the solo career of horn player Ralph Carney and Chris Butler's band the Waitresses. There is Chrissie Hynde, a virtual lock for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In film, there's Jim Jarmusch, the grittily independent director, beloved by critics, the darling of Cannes and Sundance, forever flirting at the edges of the mainstream. In comics, there's Paul Mavrides, co-author of the underground Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and yet another whose influence is more notable than his popular success. In literature, there's Rita Dove, the Pulitzer Prize winner and two-time U.S. poet laureate, whose more refined tone may place her in a different aesthetic category, but who (like Hynde) has passed blithely through glass ceilings -- iconoclastic, adventurous and influential.

  • Turtle Rock Guitar Book 5.Pdf
Preface to the 5th Edition This book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because one of my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official camp song book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. That summer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities were cancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into the lodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing all afternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung our favourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never even heard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) I remain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo that afternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords for the rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first edition of The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book. Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of new songs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bring everything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. On Birch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out on Mi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to the camp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's also where we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in the morning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer.
