One miner and political activist, Chris Evans, gave me a long interview ranging across the history of locality, mining, work, and his hopes for a socialist future. In describing the nature of life and work, he moved into recitation mode and said: I go to work, to earn money to buy bread to build up my strength, to go to work to earn money to buy bread to build up my strength to go to work . We laughed wryly. I enjoyed the way in which he had reduced the whole cycle of life and work into one rhythmic account. In literary terms, it turns the intricate interactions of existence into emblems, single vignettes that flow one to the other, contrasting with each other. It is, then, a particular kind of storytelling used with the in- tent of revealing or alerting a reader or listener to what the speaker thinks is an unsatisfactory state of affairs. The fact that the story doesn’t end with a conclusion hits the button because through its never- ending form (rather than through words themselves) it re- veals the folly, drudgery, and wrongness of what is being critiqued. 1 For general queries, contact [email protected] © Copyright, Princeton University Press. -

ABSTRACT The thesis argues that the most distinctive feature of the Labour Church was Theological Socialism. For its founder, John Trevor, Theological Socialism was the literal Religion of Socialism, a post-Christian prophecy announcing the dawn of a new utopian era explained in terms of the Kingdom of God on earth; for members of the Labour Church, who are referred to throughout the thesis as Theological Socialists, Theological Socialism was an inclusive message about God working through the Labour movement. By focussing on Theological Socialism the thesis challenges the historiography and reappraises the significance of the Labour -

Between L.S. Lowry and Coronation Street: Salford Cultural Identities Susanne Schmid Abstract: Salford, “the classic slum”, according to Robert Roberts’s study, has had a distinct cultural identity of its own, which is centred on the communal ideal of work- ing-class solidarity, best exemplified in the geographical space of “our street”. In the wake of de-industrialisation, Roberts’s study, lyrics by Ewan MacColl, L.S. Lowry’s paintings, and the soap opera Coronation Street all nostalgically celebrate imagined northern working-class communities, imbued with solidarity and human warmth. Thereby they contribute to constructing both English and northern identities. Key names and concepts: Friedrich Engels - Robert Roberts - Ewan MacColl - L.S. Salford as an Imagined Northern Community For a long time, Salford, situated right next to the heart of Manchester, has been known as a place that underwent rapid and painful industri- alisation in the nineteenth century and an equally difficult and agonis- ing process of de-industrialisation in the twentieth. If Manchester, the former flag-ship of the cotton industry, has been renowned for its beautiful industrial architecture, its museums, and its economic suc- cess, Salford has been hailed as “the classic slum”, as in the title of Robert Roberts’s seminal study about Salford slum life in the first quarter of the twentieth century (Roberts 1990, first published in 1971). The equation of “Salford” and “slum”, however, dates back further than that. Abstract This thesis demonstrates that the First World War did not have a major long-term impact on the evangelical free churches of Birmingham. Whilst many members were killed in the conflict, and local church auxiliaries were disrupted, once the participants – civil and military – returned, the work and mission of the churches mostly continued as they had before the conflict, the exception being the Adult School movement, which had been in decline prior to the conflict. It reveals impacts on local church life, including new opportunities for women amongst the Baptist and Congregational churches where they began to serve as deacons. The advent of conscription forced church members to personally face the issue as to whether as Christians they could in conscience bear arms. The conflict also speeded ecumenical co-operation nationally, in areas such as recognition of chaplains, and locally, in organising local prayer meetings and commemorations. -
Manchester and Salford Politics and the Early Development of the Independent Labour Party
JEFFREY HILL MANCHESTER AND SALFORD POLITICS AND THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDEPENDENT LABOUR PARTY The grass-roots activities of the Independent Labour Party have been the subject of increased scrutiny from historians over the past few years, especially in the pages of this journal.1 Consequently we can now be a little surer about the contribution of the party to the development of an in- dependent labour movement in Britain at the end of the nineteenth cen- tury, though with every fresh case-study a different local strategy seems to come to light. The one outstanding profile in this field is the closely observed account of the ILP in Bradford by J. Reynolds and K. Laybourn, who identify several key features in the party's growth in that city, notably the reformist nature of ILP socialism and the close associations with local trade unionism. "From the outset", they tell us, "Bradford trade unionism and the Bradford ILP were seen as two aspects of a single homogeneous labour movement aimed at the emancipation of the working class from poverty and exploitation."2 But how far this pattern of development was repeated elsewhere is a different matter. David Rubinstein's account of the ILP's intervention in the Barnsley bye-election of 1897, for example, reveals that the ILP in this area did not take up a Bradford-style policy of labour alliance until the late 1890's, and suggests that this was the case for the ILP as a whole.3 Yet studies of the party's activities on the other side of the Pennines indicate a different story still. -

Socialism and Education in Britain 1883 -1902 by Kevin Manton A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) Institute of Education University of London September 1998 (i.omcN) 1 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the policies of the socialist movement in the last two decades of the nineteenth century with regard to the education of children. This study is used to both reassess the nature of these education policies and to criticise the validity of the historiographical models of the movement employed by others. This study is thematic and examines the whole socialist movement of the period, rather than a party or an individual and as such draws out the common policies and positions shared across the movement. The most central of these was a belief that progress in what was called the 'moral' and the 'material' must occur simultaneously. Neither the ethical transformation of individuals, nor, the material reformation of society alone would give real progress. Children, for example, needed to be fed as well as educated if the socialist belief in the power of education and the innate goodness of humanity was to be realised. This belief in the unity of moral and material reform effected all socialist policies studied here, such as those towards the family, teachers, and the content of the curriculum. The socialist programme was also heavily centred on the direct democratic control of the education system, the ideal type of which actually existed in this period in the form of school boards. The socialist programme was thus not a utopian wish list but rather was capable of realisation through the forms of the state education machinery that were present in the period. -

It focuses in particular on the movement’s emergence in the 1890s and the first three decades of operation. Situated amidst a growing international field of comparable socialist children’s initiatives, socialist Sunday schools attempted to connect their local activity of children’s education to the broader politics of international socialism. In this discussion I explore the attempt to make this con- nection, including the endeavour to transcend party differences in the creation of a non-partisan international children’s socialist movement, the cooption of traditional Sunday school rituals, and the resolve to make socialist childhood cultures was the responsibility of both men and women. Defending their existence against criticism from conservative campaigners, the state, and sections of the left, socialist Sunday schools mobilized a complex and contested culture of socialist childhood. INTRODUCTION The British Socialist Sunday School movement (SSS) first appeared within the sanguine temper of turn-of-the-century socialist politics. The volumes of this have long been out of print. The remaining seven chapters of the book consist of An Appendix concerning " His Days and His Ways," from 1871 to 1898, when he died. This part of the story is of necessity told very briefly, and with some scruples concerning a few left in the land of the living The writer hopes he may be pardoned if anything is thought to be amiss. He aims only at a truthful record, without " malice aforethought " to any living soul. The portrait is from an excellent photograph taken at Malvern in 1895. HS3112/EH3612 The life and times of George Orwell 1903-50 Academic session 2003/04 SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES The Life and Times of George Orwell 1903-50 A moral history of the first half of the 20th century Module Description Eric Blair was born on 25 June 1903 at Motihari, in Bengal, and died of pulmonary tuberculosis at University College hospital London on 26 January 1950. This is his centenary year. The life he lived was mainly a writer’s life but it was also an active life where he got involved in the things that mattered to him. ‘Getting involved’, and then writing about it, Blair did in the guise of ‘George Orwell’. Blair was an intensely serious and well-read man who in his guise of George Orwell pretended not to be. Instead he pretended to be ordinary, and it was as the ordinary and broadest Englishman that he put his moral self on the line. Orwell’s literary achievements alone would have made him interesting to historians. But in the personality he adopted, and in the moral issues he was interested in, and faced down, Orwell was more than a good writer. He is a way into the century’s dilemmas. This module considers Orwell in history. It considers also the moral and political battle over his reputation. Module Objectives We will endeavour to learn something of Orwell’s life and times; to reflect critically on those times; to read selected works by Orwell and about him; to discuss the moral issues of his day; to understand that there are varieties of ways of interpreting those issues and the history behind them; to construct arguments and deploy supporting data; and most importantly to write and talk about all these things clearly and accurately - much as Orwell himself tried to do.
