To answer these questions, I analyze archival materials related to the Dillingham Commission (1907-1911), an investigative commission that conducted the most comprehensive study of immigrants ever undertaken by the federal government. With the rapid increase of immigration in the late nineteenth century, there was a growing sense that immigration was a problem, and both the public and elite policymakers deliberated over immigration control. The Dillingham Commission was tasked with providing a scientific foundation for immigration policy-making by sorting out “desirable” immigrants from “undesirable” ones based on a massive amount of statistical and ethnographic data. The importance of the Dillingham Commission, however, lay in the fact that it captured the ways in which immigration was transforming racial boundaries – those within and around the the whiteness. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: ARTFUL IDENTIFICATIONS: CRAFTING SURVIVAL IN JAPANESE AMERICAN CONCENTRATION CAMPS Jane E. Dusselier, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Dissertation directed by: Associate Professor, Seung-kyung Kim Department of Women’s Studies “Artful Identifications” offers three meanings of internment art. First, internees remade locations of imprisonment into livable places of survival. Inside places were remade as internees responded to degraded living conditions by creating furniture with discarded apple crates, cardboard, tree branches and stumps, scrap pieces of wood left behind by government carpenters, and wood lifted from guarded lumber piles. Having addressed the material conditions of their living units, internees turned their attention to aesthetic matters by creating needle crafts, wood carvings, ikebana, paintings, shell art, and kobu. Dramatic changes to outside spaces of “assembly centers” and concentration camps were also critical to altering hostile settings into survivable landscapes My second meaning positions art as a means of making connections, a framework offered with the hope of escaping utopian models of community building which overemphasize the development of common beliefs, ideas, and practices that unify people into easily surveilled groups. “Making Connections” situates the process of individuals identifying with larger collectivities in the details of everyday life, a complicated and layered process that often remains invisible to us. By sewing clothes for each other, creating artificial flowers and lapel pins as gifts, and participating in classes and exhibits, internees addressed their needs for maintaining and developing connections. “Making Connections” advances perhaps the broadest possible understanding of identity formation based on the idea of employing diverse art forms to sustain already developed relationships and creating new attachments in the context of displacement. -

Preface and Acknowledgements I undertook the writing of the article, Japanese American Alumnae: Their Lives and Legacy in 2010 when the editors of the Chronicle of the University of California, Carroll Brentano, Ann Lage and Kathryn M. Neal were planning their Issue on Student Life. They contacted me because they wanted to include an article on Japanese American alumnae and they knew that the Japanese American Women/Alumnae of UC Berkeley (JAWAUCB), a California Alumni club, was conducting oral histories of many of our members, in an attempt to piece together our evolution from the Japanese Women’s Student Club (JWSC). As the daughter of one of the founders of the original JWSC, I agreed to research and to write the JWSC/JAWAUCB story. I completed the article in 2010, but the publication of the Chronicle of the University of California’s issue on Student Life has suffered unfortunate delays. Because I wanted to distribute our story while it was still timely, I am printing a limited number of copies of the article in a book form I would like to thank fellow JAWAUCB board members, who provided encouragement, especially during 2010, Mary (Nakata) Tomita, oral history chair, May (Omura) Hirose, historian, and Irene (Suzuki) Tekawa, chair. -

There seemed to be no one home at the Victo- rian home where the couple had lived for 20 years. Or per- haps another explanation could be offered, perhaps they Wpreferred the consolation of darkness on a day that had caused them such personal pain. ■ The next day, Professor Ichihashi – a Stanford alumnus and teacher for 30 years – peered into his classroom and asked apprehensively, “Shall I come in?” The students welcomed him into the room. Though sympathetic to the people of his homeland, Ichi- hashi condemned the Japanese military for starting the con- flict and began monthly purchases of hundred-dollar U.S. war bonds through the university. And despite the compas- sion of his students, Ichihashi, feeling betrayed and disgraced by his homeland, was too distraught to continue teaching. He visited Edgar Eugene Robinson, the chair of the History Department, and talked about what he should do. After the meeting, Robinson wrote in his diary that Ichi- hashi had been “the gentleman” he always had been and that his longtime friend had seen “the death of all his hopes and his life.” Ichihashi next went to see Stanford President Ray Ly- man Wilbur and submitted his resignation. -

Gebhard Title: COMMUNITY IDENTITY IN “THE GRANADA PIONEER” Advisor: Richard Clemmer-Smith Degree Date: June 2015 ABSTRACT My research examines how the writers of the Granada Pioneer, a newspaper published in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, used the editorial column of that publication to shape the community identity of that camp. The newspaper was published by Japanese America internees living in that camp, but their readership was composed of Japanese American internees and also non-interned non- Japanese Americans. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, I found that the internee writers were using the editorial column to shape a community habitus within the internment camp while at the same time attempting to reshape the imagined community of “America” within the minds of all their readers. -
