Gustafson began photographing seriously less than 10 years ago. SIGMA Lens Corporation asked him to photograph Florida wildlife using its lenses. This was his first photography assignment. A friend suggested he call father, who was a teacher and a machinist, and his mother, Arthur Morris, a Floridian who was well known for his bird Louise Carlson ’47 Gustafson, accepted the challenge. photography. His wife, Julie Stenstrom ’82 Gustafson, whom he met at Augustana at trumpet auditions in 1978, sometimes accompanies him. While Gustafson has primarily led photo safaris in Africa and Costa Rica, he is now organizing photo tours to China. Instead of wildlife, his Chinese trips will emphasize photographing architecture, landscapes and people. Photographs from his past safaris are published in various travel catalogues and used by The Discovery Channel as signature images and by the National Geographic Society. In addition to the Smithsonian Institution Museum of Natural History, Gustafson’s photos are displayed in the African House at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo and the St. Louis Children’s Memorial Hospital, among other places.
