The species is remarkable by the presence of flat tubers, from which shoots with a single or few basal leaves and large and lax inflorescences (pair-flowered cymes) emerge. The corolla is white or pale violet and obliquely campanulate. Also remarkable is the bright yellow stigma with strongly expanded and sometimes slightly emarginate lower lip. This “chiritoid” stigma form supports the recent inclusion of most species of Chirita sect. Chirita into the newly defined genusHenckelia . The closest relative of H. pradeepiana is probably H. missionis, known from the Western Ghats of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, some 400 km away from the former. Frahmia 5:1-10. This article presents the diversity of Bryophytes of the lowlands and midlands of the Calicut (Kozhikode) district of Kerala in the Peninsular India. It provides a list of 57 species, mainly from the thickly populated areas. 1. Introduction The Calicut is well known as the historical spot where Vasco da Gamma, the Portugese explorer, landed in search of bio-resources of India. Currently it is known as Kozhikode. It is of great historical relevance as the capital of the kingdom of the Zamorin’s and later that of the Malabar district during the British period. It is notable for its rich biodiversity at all levels from habitats and species. It offers almost all types of habitats available in Southern India, from coast, sandy plains, brackish water system, mangroves, rivers, midland scrubs to the misty forests of high altitudes of the Western Ghats. Located between latitudes 11o 08' & 11o 50' north and longitudes 75o 30' & 76o 08' east, the Calicut district is in the northern part of Kerala state of India. It lies bordered by Kannur district on the north, Wayanad district on the east, Malappuram district on the south and more than 80 km stretch of Arabian sea on the west (Fig. -

(2014): Genus Bryum Hedw. in Peninsular India. Frahmia 4:1- 11. The present study is aimed mainly to document the diversity of genus Bryum Hedw. in Peninsular India. During the revision of the genus 26 taxa are distributed in four states (Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu) and one union territory (Goa) of Western Ghats, whereas 8 species reported from 3 states (Andhra Pradesh, parts of Odisha and Tamil Nadu) of Eastern Ghats. Bryum tuberosum Mohamed & Damanhuri is reported for the first time from Shimoga district of Karnataka and B. wightii Mitt. from Munnar (Idukki district) of Kerala. 1. Introduction The geography of South Indian region encompasses two maountain ranges i.e. the Western and Eastern Ghats and a plateau heartland of which Western Ghats itself is a biodiversity hotspot. The region covers an area of about 635780 square km i.e. 19.31% of the total area of India. The region comprises the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and some parts of Odisha as well as union territories of Goa, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. This region is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the west, Indian Ocean in the south and Bay of Bangal in the east. The Western Ghats constitute a mountaineous range along the western side of India which are not true mountains, but are the faulted edge of the Deccan Plateau. -

This is the first record of this species from Kerala. Key words: Kerala, little known, new record, Porella perrottetiana, Porellaceae INTRODUCTION Porella is the best known and widely distributed tropical genus of the order Porellales with about 60 species in the world and 27 taxa in India (Dan- dotiya et al. 2011, Daniels 2010, Nair et al. 2005, Singh and Nath 2007, Singh and Singh 2006, 2015). Chopra (1943) recorded a few species from South India. Most of the genera earlier reported from South India were under Madotheca and Hattori (1978, 1979) synonymised all the species known under Madotheca to Porella. Hence a total of eight species, one variety and one subspecies viz., Porella acutifolia (Lehm. et Lindenb.) Trevis. var. acutifolia, Porella caespitans (Steph.) S. Hatt. var. cordifolia (Steph.) S. Hatt., Porella campylophylla (Lehm. et Lindb.) Trevis. subsp. campylophylla, Porella campylophylla (Lehm. et Lindb.) Trevis. subsp. lancistipula (Steph.) S. Hatt., Porella chinensis (Steph.) S. K. RAWAT Abstract. Bryophytes are an important part of the flora of the Nilgiri Hills of Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. This paper gives an updated catalogue of the Hepaticae of the Nilgiri Hills. The list includes all available records, based on the authors’ collections and those in LWU and other renowned herbaria. The catalogue of liverworts indicates their substrate and occur- rence, and includes several records new for the Nilgiri bryoflora as well as for Western Ghats. The list of Hepaticae contains 29 families, 55 genera and 164 taxa. The list of Anthocerotae comprises 2 families, 3 genera and 5 taxa belonging to almost all life form types. The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level. -

Chembra Peak Kerala Chembra Peak is the highest point on the Wayanad Hill Range Famous for the steep and rewarding trek that leads up to the peak, and a heart-shaped lake which falls on the way, the Chembra Peak is the highest point on the Wayanad Hill Range in Kerala, a part of Western Ghats mountain range. Beautiful views of the surrounding tea estates that encroach upon the lower regions of the Wayanad ranges, can be seen along the trek. Chembra Peak Trek Starting Point: Trekkers to Chembra peak arrive mostly from the nearby town Meppadi. From Meppadi, several jeeps run that take visitors to the Chembra Trek starting point. Visitors arriving from Kalpetta travel to Meppadi first. The trek provides views of the entire Wayanad district, and some hill ranges even beyond it. The trek can be divided into sections, which mark difficulty levels, and make it easier for trekkers to decide how far they can go up during the trek. 1. Starting point to watch tower : It is a fairly easy trek to the watch-tower, and provides great views of the surrounding greenery. The distance to the watch-tower is 0.62 miles (1 kilometer). This easy trek lasts up to twenty minutes. 2. Watch tower till the end of the forest : From the watch tower, a small forest starts that soon leads to an open grassland. 3. Forest to heart-shaped lake : The walk now is moderately difficult, and leads to a beautiful heart-shaped lake. The lake is called Hridaya Saras in local language. -

J D Hook through protocorm-like bodies K P Martin & Joseph Madassery* Department of Biotechnology, University of Calicut, Calicut 673 635, India Received 10 January 2005; revised 16 March 2005 Rapid propagation of I. malabarica (Reichb. f.) J D Hook. an endemic and endangered orchid of the Western Ghats of Kerala. India through conversion of axillary buds to protocorm-like bodies (PLBs). and subsequent plant regeneration was achieved. Growth regulators and sugar displayed significant influence in the induction of PLBs. In vitro derived shoots from field grown rhizomes of Ipsea cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with 13.3 ~ N6-benzyladenine (BA) containing 2% commercial grade sugar turned the axillary buds to PLBs within 25 days. and developed a mean of 33.1 PLBs within 50 days. Kinetin (KIN) did not induce PLBs, but facilitated axillary bud proliferation. Transfer of PLBs on medium having same concentration of BA and sugar facilitated rapid multiplication. and developed a mean of 47.5 PLBs. No decline of PLB proliferation was observed up to 10th subculture. Half strength MS medium with 6.97 ~ KIN facilitated conversion of 98% PLBs to plantlets. On this media, a mean of 5.8 roots were also developed per shoot. Shoots developed bulbs during culture were grown to rhizomes. Increase of sugar to 6 or 8% hastened the development of bulbs/rhizomes. Reintroduction of PLB-derived plantlets in the natural habitat i.e. -

(Melastomataceae) was established by Linnaeus in 1753 since when more than 250 species have been added to it, mainly from the paleotropics (Mabberley, 2005). A total of 67 taxa of Memecylon (40 species and 27 varieties) were included in the Flora of British India (Clarke, 1879) of which nine species and three varieties are from modern-day India.
