Granite (Building Stone) is the most commonly used metal in road, railway track construction etc. Rapid industrialization and growth in infrastructure has made global as well as domestic demand for building stone. Being a construction material, the mineral will be used in local market. The excavated mineral will be crushed into requir ed sizes and made ready for use. The mining project will fulfill its end uses in construction purposes. The mining and associated activities in the mineral bearing areas will add to the revenue of the state through royalty on the mineral . 4 GRANITE STONE QUARRY OWNED BY ABDULLA T T KOZHIKODE TALUK, KOZHIKODE DISTRICT, KERALA, EXTENT: 2.0437Ha, SY NO: 172 Employment potential: The quarry shall provide direct employment to 13 people including technical & professional competent staff experienced in quarrying &allied activities . The working hours at the quarry will be 8hours/day for 300days/year . The employees will be assigned job relating to drilling, the handling of the building stone and waste &other routine works in the quarry. Main rock type in the study area is charnockite. At places where they are exposed, the charnockite is medium to coarse grained with dark grey quartz. The soil & over burden thickness is varies from avg. 1.2 m. to 0. 6 m. Topographically, the area is undulating. Type of project including interlin ked and interdependent projects This is a semi mechanized open cast mining project. Mineral will be used in the construction works. Building construction and other infrastructural facilities are the areas, where the material will be consumed. The quarry will be linked with a crusher unit available near the complex. The fine mineral is sold to the vendors who manufacture hollow block / solid block and hence they are i nterdependent projects attached to the mining project. Location (M ap showing general location, specific location, project boundary and project site layout) with coordinates The proposed quarry site is in private own land with rocky area at Survey No. 172 of Kodiyathoor Village, Kozhikode Taluk, Kozhikode District , Kerala for an area of 2.0437 hectare . The geographical location of the mine with respect to the boundary p illars of the lease area (extreme most points) is given below: - The site is geographically located between Latitude (N) : 11° 16’55.74 ” to 11° 17’1.06 ” N Longitude (E) : 7 6 ° 02 ’ 20.58 ” to 7 6°02 ’ 26.64 ” E The google map superimposed with project boundary showing location of the lease area is provided in Plate 10 (Mining Plan) . The species is remarkable by the presence of flat tubers, from which shoots with a single or few basal leaves and large and lax inflorescences (pair-flowered cymes) emerge. The corolla is white or pale violet and obliquely campanulate. Also remarkable is the bright yellow stigma with strongly expanded and sometimes slightly emarginate lower lip. This “chiritoid” stigma form supports the recent inclusion of most species of Chirita sect. Chirita into the newly defined genusHenckelia . The closest relative of H. pradeepiana is probably H. missionis, known from the Western Ghats of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, some 400 km away from the former. • A New Scapigerous Species of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) from India
Bangladesh J. Plant Taxon. 18(2): 141-148, 2011 (December) © 2011 Bangladesh Association of Plant Taxonomists A NEW SCAPIGEROUS SPECIES OF IMPATIENS (BALSAMINACEAE) FROM INDIA 1* M.K. RATHEESH NARAYANAN, N. ANILKUMAR, R. MEERA RAJ, M. SIVADASAN 1 AND A.H. ALFARHAN M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Puthoorvayal 673 121, Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala, India Keywords: Balsaminaceae; Impatiens minae; Western Ghats; India; Scapigerous species. Abstract Impatiens minae Ratheesh, Anil Kumar & Sivad. a new scapigerous species of Impatiens from Wayanad district in Kerala, India is described and illustrated. The new species resembles Impatiens denisonii and I. scapiflora by its 3-lobed lateral united petals and lower sepal with a long spur; but differs from the latter in having a curved band of dense fleshy clavate papillae at the base of lateral united petals, and from the former in the absence of a dorsal filiform appendage or auricle at the base of the lateral united petals. Introduction The genus Impatiens L. (Balsaminaceae) is one of the largest and difficult genera of angiosperms comprising over 1000 species (Mabberley, 2008), and several new species are being recognized and described each year. The earliest detailed study of the genus was by Hooker and Thomson (1859); and revision by Warburg and Reiche (1895) with infrageneric classification. The major contributions on Indian species are those of Hooker (1874-1875, 1904, 1905, 1906). In India the genus is represented by over 203 taxa mainly distributed in three major centres of diversity, i.e. Western Himalayas, North East India and the Western Ghats, each characterized by its own species groups and sections (Hooker, 1910; Gamble, 1915; Rajalal et al., 1996; Vivekananthan et al., 1997).

Bryophyte Diversity of the lowlands and midlands of Kozhikode District 1 Bryophyte Diversity of the lowlands and midlands of Kozhikode District, Kerala, India 1 K.P. RAJESH AND C.N. MANJU 1 Department of Botany, the Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, Kozhikode 673014, Kerala, India. Emails: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract: Rajesh, K.P. and Manju, C.N (2014): Author (year): Bryophyte Diversity of the lowlands and midlands of Kozhikode District, Kerala, India. Frahmia 5:1-10. This article presents the diversity of Bryophytes of the lowlands and midlands of the Calicut (Kozhikode) district of Kerala in the Peninsular India. It provides a list of 57 species, mainly from the thickly populated areas. 1. Introduction The Calicut is well known as the historical spot where Vasco da Gamma, the Portugese explorer, landed in search of bio-resources of India. Currently it is known as Kozhikode. It is of great historical relevance as the capital of the kingdom of the Zamorin’s and later that of the Malabar district during the British period. It is notable for its rich biodiversity at all levels from habitats and species. It offers almost all types of habitats available in Southern India, from coast, sandy plains, brackish water system, mangroves, rivers, midland scrubs to the misty forests of high altitudes of the Western Ghats. Located between latitudes 11o 08' & 11o 50' north and longitudes 75o 30' & 76o 08' east, the Calicut district is in the northern part of Kerala state of India.
