American-born Kundry () to open a Festival and the first mezzo-soprano to perform Lady Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera.

On retirement from her performing career, Miss Dalis returned to her native San José, where she was appointed a full professor of music by the president of San José State University. Her principal focus there, the opera workshop program, quickly surpassed the production standards expected of collegiate opera. The program produced such a large number of career entry-level performers that Miss Dalis was able to establish a professional regional company, Opera San José, in 1984. The company showcased talented West Coast singers and provided, for the first time, a season of professional operatic entertainment in San José. The company has received excellent notices in journals from Warsaw, Berlin, London, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and of course, San José. Opera San José is the only resident ensemble opera company in the United States that contracts its principal artists on a 12-month basis. In addition to salary and benefits, Opera San José artists receive housing—also unique in this country.

Irene Dalis' credits include principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Covent Garden, , Chicago Lyric Opera, Berlin, Rome, Naples, and others. Her awards include Fulbright Award, 1951; Richard Wagner Medallion, Bayreuth, West Germany, 1963; Grand Prix du Disque, 1964 (Parsifal recording, Phillips, Bayreuth Festival, 1962, under conductor ); Tower Award, San Jose State University, 1974; honored by the board of directors of the Metropolitan Opera Association on the occasion of her 20th anniversary season, 1977; Woman of Achievement Award from the San Jose Mercury News and the League of Friends of Santa Clara County, Commission on the Status of Women, 1983; commendation from the Honorable John Vasconcellos, 23rd Assembly District, 1983; inducted into the California Public Educators Hall of Fame, 1985; Award of Merit from the People of the City of San Francisco, 1985; Honored Citizen of the City of San José, 1986; Hall of Fame Induction and Medal of Achievement, Academy of Vocal Arts, 1988; San Francisco Opera Gold Medal Award, 1998; Silicon Valley Arts & Business Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Arts Council Silicon Valley, 2008. Miss Dalis is listed in Who's Who in America (since 1958), Who's Who in Opera (since 1971), and Who's Who in Music. She obtained her bachelor's degree from San José State University, her master's from Columbia University (New York), and her honorary doctorates from and the California State University system.

July 30 Meeting Recap by Arthur Taylor

Last Friday's meeting was "international guest day." Peter Anderson, who is from the Morgan Hill Rotary and is the district chair for International Service, brought his wife, Elena, and Veronica, a member of a Rotary Club in Buenos Aires. Sully, Veronica's mother, is a member of La Rueda Femenina club. Also visiting was the past president of the Rotary Club Karachi North, Pakistan, Saleem Chaudhry, who complimented our president on the meeting. Naturally, Mr. Chaudhry was invited back.

Dave Evens gave the thought of the day. He carried it off without the benefit of his script, which he left at his office.

George Uccelli provided the Rotary Minute without the benefit of his voice. Because of George's laryngitis, President Art reminded members who had not paid their dues to pay up.

Jose reminded us of the A's game and the great food he will be preparing.

Andy invited us to make a donation to help children in Mexico who benefit from our club project there. This can allow members to have a more personal relationship with one of the kids we serve. If you are interested, see Andy.

On September 18, we will hold our club's 30-year anniversary party. Kit http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/Bulletin/SendBulletinEmail.aspx?cid=5953[8/2/2010 5:05:23 PM] Rotary Club of San Jose North - North Wind

circulated a signup sheet.

Jaime circulated another signup sheet for our first service project for this year, to be on August 14. All members are encouraged to participate.

President Art announced that Andy will fill in for him for the meeting of August 13 as he will be on a 50-mile hike on the Lost Coast with the Boy Scouts.

Toney Delas spoke on the loan mortification process. It was interesting information that ideally will not be needed by any of our members. Mortification can be beneficial but it doesn't sound like fun.

The joker is still wild, so the money is still waiting to be won.
