October 29, 2015 MRAG Americas announces that the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska flatfish fisheries did not receive an objection following posting of the Final Report and Determination. The MRAG Americas Certification Committee has determined that the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska flatfish fisheries may be recertified as sustainable against the MSC standard. Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska flatfish fisheries are now recertified for 5 more years, subject to successful completion of annual surveillance audits. MRAG has produced a public certification report for these fisheries, available on the MSC website at https://www.msc.org/track-a- fishery/fisheries-in-the-program/certified/pacific/gulf-of-alaska-flatfish/reassessment-downloads and https://www.msc.org/track-a-fishery/fisheries-in-the-program/certified/pacific/bering-sea-and- aleutian-islands-flatfish/reassessment-downloads. 2017 SUSTAINABILITY RATING SCORE How did Tradex Score for Sustainably Sourced Raw Materials in 2017? VICTORIA, BC, February 28 - THE STATS ARE IN! Our Sustainability Rating Score for 2017 increased to 92 percent for all production of our three SINBAD brands. This means that 92 percent of all raw materials used in the production of our SINBAD, SINBAD Gold, and SINBAD Platinum products in 2017 were harvested from sustainable fisheries. This is up 7 percent from our 2016 score of 85 percent. Tradex uses guidance from Seafood Watch, Ocean Wise, and the Marine Stewardship Council to determine the sustainability status of raw materials. Their ratings are then entered into our inFINite™ Sustainability Production Tracker to arrive at a score out of 100. Below is a breakdown of how sustainable our SINBAD, SINBAD Gold, and SINBAD Platinum brand products measured up by category. 100% Sustainably Harvested Raw Materials in 2017 Below are the species that scored 100% on sourcing from sustainable fisheries Atlantic Cod Chum Salmon Coho Salmon Haddock Ocean Perch Pink Salmon Pink Shrimp Pollock Rock Sole Sockeye Salmon Tilapia Yellowfin Sole Pacific Rockfish Less than 100% Sustainably Harvested Raw Materials in 2017 Below are the species that scored less than 100% on sourcing from sustainable fisheries Species Results Improvement Plan In 2018, whenever possible, Tradex will source from the MSC Certified Alaskan Fishery. MIXED PROGRESS IN 2008 ALASKA FLATFISH FISHERIES When the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (the Council) cut the 2008 Bering Sea pollock quotas by 28%, it supplemented the total all-species quota in the Bering Sea with major increases to quotas of various flatfish species. Although these flatfish species command lower prices than pollock or Pacific cod, the Council felt increased flatfish quotas could somewhat offset quota holders for the lost pollock revenue. ESTIMATED IMPACTS OF HYPOTHETICAL OIL SPILL ACCIDENTS OFF PORT MOLLER, PORT HEIDEN AND CAPE NEWENHAM ON EASTERN BERING SEA YELLOWFIN SOLE by Francis M. Fukuhara INTRODUCTION The yellowfin sole (Limanda aspera) is a flounder of the family Pleuronectidae and is the most abundant of the commercially important species of the eastern Bering Sea benthos. The species ranked first or second in abundance of all fish taken in the trawl surveys of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center (NWAFC) trawl surveys in 1975-80. Although information for more recent years was not available, their abundance ranking probably remains unchanged. This large biomass is ubiquitously distributed over the eastern Bering Sea, therefore, any oil spill scenario in Bristol Bay will contaminate some of the species’ habitat. The impact of such contamination on the productivity of the eastern Bering Sea yellowfin sole stock will depend upon the concentrations and duration of exposure as well as the physiological state and life history stage of the animals in the contaminated area. Considerable knowledge has been compiled on the life history, distribution, abundance and fishery of yellowfin sole in the eastern Bering Sea (Fadeev 1970a & b, Bakkala 1981, Wakabayashi 1985). The purpose of this report is to summarize information from these and other sources to provide relevant background information for estimating the impact of specific quantities and types of 2 petroleum released at three sites in Bristol Bay on the productivity of the eastern Bering Sea yellowfin sole population. DISTRIBUTION Overall Distribution Yellowfin sole (Limanda aspera) are widely distributed in the northern North Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas.
