He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form jazz poetry. Hughes is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "Harlem was in vogue." Biography Ancestry and Childhood Both of Hughes' paternal and maternal great-grandmothers were African-American, his maternal great-grandfather was white and of Scottish descent. A paternal great-grandfather was of European Jewish descent. Hughes's maternal grandmother Mary Patterson was of African-American, French, English and Native American descent. One of the first women to attend Oberlin College, she first married Lewis Sheridan Leary, also of mixed race. Lewis Sheridan Leary subsequently joined John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859 and died from his wounds. In 1869 the widow Mary Patterson Leary married again, into the elite, politically active Langston family. Her second husband was Charles Henry Langston, of African American, Native American, and Euro-American ancestry. He and his younger brother John Mercer Langston worked for the abolitionist cause and helped lead the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society in 1858. Charles Langston later moved to Kansas, where he was active as an educator and activist for voting and rights for African Americans. Charles and Mary's daughter Caroline was the mother of Langston Hughes. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, the second child of school teacher Carrie (Caroline) Mercer Langston and James Nathaniel Hughes (1871–1934).

Following on and extending Dewey’s work, she defined her philosophy of aesthetic education as signifying “an initiation into new ways of seeing, hearing, feeling, moving…the nurture of a special kind of reflectiveness and expressiveness, a reaching out for meanings, a learning to learn" (p. 7). Imaginative inquiry, the vehicle for enacting an aesthetic education curriculum, is a practice that is fueled by curiosity by which the imagination interacts with the world to bring about multiple possible meanings and ways of understanding. The Langston Hughes House on East 127th Street in Harlem was the home of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes where he wrote works like “Montage of a Dream Deferred” and “I Wonder as I Wander.” The Lewis Latimer House in Flushing, Queens, honors Lewis Howard Latimer, an African- American inventor and humanist born to fugitive slaves who lived in the home from 1903 until his death in 1928.     Landmarks Preservation Commission August 11, 1981, Designation List 146 LP-1135 LANGSTON HUGHES HOUSE, 20 East 127th Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1869, architect Alexander Wilson. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan, Tax Map Block 1751, Lot 64. On May 13, 1980, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Langston Hughes House and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (No. 7). The hearing had been duly adver­ tised in accordance with the provisions of law. Four witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS This modest brownstone rowhouse, built in 1869, was designed in the Italianate style by architect Alexander Wilson. Built by two real estate developers, James Meagher and Thomas Hanson, it is typical of rowhouses built in Harlem during the period after the Civil War. The house ach.ieves its significance, however, as the home for 20 years of Langston Hughes, author and poet and one of the foremost figures of the Harlem Renaissance, a literary movement of the 1920s-30s that focused on the question of Negro Identity. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, on February 1, 1902, son of James Nathaniel Hughes and Carrie Mercer Langston Hughes. The family moved frequently during his youth; he graduated from grammer school in Lincoln, Illinois, in 1915, and from high school in Cleveland where he lived with his mother. At that time his father was manager for an electric company in Toluca, Mexico. Hughes came to New York to attend Columbia College during the academic year 1921-22; he transferred to Lincoln University in Philadelphia the following year~ finally graduating in 1929.

    THE HARLEM FAMILY INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT 2017 & 2018 ANNUAL REPORT 2017 & 2018 Letter from the Chairman and President Dear Friends, We are pleased to bring you this update on the Harlem Family Institute and to tell you how we’ve thrived and grown, as we pursued our two-fold mission of providing psychoanalytic training and therapy in 2017 and 2018: ● HFI provided free or low-fee long-term psychotherapy, parent workshops, mother- baby classes and related services to more people than ever before over a two-year period. In areas of NYC that especially need our help, our therapists worked with children, their parents, caregivers and others at our clinical sites in schools, community centers and houses of worship — including a new HFI training and service site at a Central Harlem church, Fresh Oils Ministries. ● We significantly increased enrollment of candidates in our training institute, expanding from 10 candidates in 2017 to 17 in 2018 This growth was facilitated by our gaining New York State approval in 2015 to train suitable individuals holding at least a Master's degree in any field to become licensed or certified psychoanalysts through our low-cost, diversity-sensitive training program. HFI has received high praise for its work in attracting and training, as well as treating, people of color. With the Institute’s deep roots in Harlem, we are especially involved with African American and Latinx individuals and communities. HFI believes that psychoanalytic theory and therapy need to transcend their Eurocentric, middle-class roots and more fully recognize and address the diverse sociocultural and historical backgrounds of those whom the profession seeks to serve today.
