    The Search for San Ffraid ‘A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts’ 2012 Jeanne Mehan 1 Abstract The Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, called in Ireland and Scotland St Brigid (also called Bride, Ffraid, Bhríde, Bridget, and Birgitta) have not previously been documented. This Irish saint is said to have traveled to Wales, but the Welsh evidence comprises a single fifteenth-century Welsh poem by Iorwerth Fynglwyd; numerous geographical dedications, including nearly two dozen churches; and references in the arts, literature, and histories. This dissertation for the first time gathers together in one place the Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, integrating the separate pieces to reveal a more focused image of a saint of obvious importance in Wales. This collection consists of material received from a Wrexham solicitor, relating to his personal and business affairs, and to some of his clients. The bulk of S.P.Bevon's personal papers consist of correspondence about properties he owned in Wrexham, and reports and prospectuses of various mining and plantation concerns abroad, in which he owned shares. There is no autobiographical material. The rest of the collection has been sorted into sequence by parish, with separate sections for court cases and election papers, as there is no large quantity of material relating to an individual client. Perhaps the most interesting item is a photograph showing the range of products made by Ewloe Potteries, Buckley, in the 1920s. Other interesting subjects include Ffos-y-go Colliery, Gwersyllt, 1901-4; the appointment of a receiver for the New Llangollen Slate and Slab Company. 1898-1903; prospectus of Broughton Hall Iron Company, c.1890; complaints about conditions at Croesnewydd Military Hospital, Wrexham, 1917; and a dispute over building costs of a new church at Brynteg, 1894-5. Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast A LESSER-KNOWN development in medicine in Great Britain was the opening in 1923 of Ruthin Castle, North Wales, the first private hospital for the investigation and treatment of obscure internal diseases. Apart from the inevitable publicity it evoked, and although the clinic acquired a wide reputation, it remained unadver- tised except for a regular notice in the Quarterly Journal of Medicine. This announced simply that pati- ents could be received for investigation and treatment on the authority of their doctor and that mental cases would not be accept- ed. It also commented briefly on the historic setting of the Castle and the beauty of its environ- ment. The clinical director was Doctor, later Sir Edmund Ivens Spriggs, K.C.V.O., M.D., F.R.C.P., J.P., who for years had been a con- sultant physician on the staff of St. George's Hos- pital, London, following an academic career in which his training in physiology had played a major part. His withdrawal from prac- tice in London in 1910 was brought about by a severe illness: pleurisy with effu- sion, after which in due course he was persuaded not to return to London but 22 to take on the clinical directorship of a small private hospital at Duff House, Banff, designed for medical cases rather than tuberculosis, which was managed and financed by a group of doctors, notably Dr.
