ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University School of Education Title: JOB SATISFACTION AMONG PSYCHOLOGISTS IN A MANAGED- CARE ENVIRONMENT Name of researcher: Walter R. Kosinski Jr., Ph.D. Date completed: May 2001 The Problem The efforts of managed care to balance resources, cost, and quality of services have created new issues among mental health professionals, affecting their careers and having the potential to affect their job satisfaction. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate how managed care has impacted career satisfaction among professional psychologists. The M ethod The present investigation examined 21 factors in the prediction of job satisfaction among licensed psychologists. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. psychologists located in California, Oregon, and Washington was randomly selected from the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Three hundred seventeen participants responded and 312 provided useable data. Participants completed a 44-question survey; 20 items were from the Short-Form Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Short-Form MSQ; Weiss et al., 1967) and 24 items measured job characteristics and attitudes regarding managed care. The Results Bivariate correlations indicated that only 4 of the 21 variables were significantly related. Job satisfaction was positively correlated with the number of colleague providers present in a psychologists' practice and negatively correlated with (1) the general perception that managed care has a negative impact on the quality of care, (2) the specific perception that managed care has a negative impact on the quality of care by taking control of patient care, and (3) the perception that managed care has a negative impact on treatment by affecting the types of interventions used. Conclusions Stepwise regression procedures that were used in combination with theoretical and statistical criteria resulted in a prediction model of job satisfaction that included annual income, number of colleagues in practice, the general perception that managed care has a positive impact on the quality of care, and the specific perception that managed care has a negative impact on the Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Eminence was measured by scores on 3 quantitative variables and 3 qualitative variables. The quantitative variables were journal citation frequency, introductory psychology textbook citation frequency, and survey response frequency. The qualitative variables were National Academy of Sciences membership, election as American Psychological Association (APA) president or receipt of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and surname used as an eponym. The qualitative variables were quantified and combined with the other 3 quantitative variables to produce a composite score that was then used to construct a rank-ordered list of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. The European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP), which has been awarded to approximately 6,000 therapists from different European countries, defines the standards and criteria for the professional practice of psychotherapy. This article compares psychotherapy regulations in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, France, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Bulgaria, United Kingdom and Belgium and shows their benefits and weaknesses. They can be seen as a learning opportunity and used in the process of developing an effective regulation of psychotherapy in countries where there is no such regulation yet, like for example in Slovenia. In 2005 a new phase in the development of psychotherapy in Europe and worldwide began with opening of the bachelor, master and doctor faculty study of psychotherapy science at Sigmund Freud Private University (SFU) in Vienna.     A Model Prescribing Act For Psychologist Seeking Prescriptive Authority The Patient Safety Evidence Based Prescribing Act. The following is a model legislation for prescriptive authority and is an evidence based model derived from the best available science related to the prescribing of psychotropic medications. Its aim is to demonstrate the differences between psychologists who utilize medications as a proficiency in providing medications related services and those prescribers in other disciplines. It is our believe that psychologists who seek prescriptive authority must demonstrate a significant difference in the ways we would provide these services because simply adding another class of prescribers to the existing list is unacceptable and not in the best interests of patients who require treatment for mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. This model is science based. The elements of the legislation are consistent with our training as psychologists and our training in the relevant medical and pharmacological issues. NIBHQ believes that patient safety is foremost and medications are not and should not be first line treatments for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. It is clear that there will always be a place for psychiatric drugs to control psychiatric disorders. However, we advocate that this intervention must only be used when other less intrusive and safe methods have been exhausted first, and only when the medications show overwhelming support to be effective for the specific patient. We look towards the research on neurogenesis and autoplasticity of the brain, learning theory and science, psychotherapy in its broad array of techniques, psychological rehabilitation, nutrition, exercise, pharmacology and psychopharmacology for the develeopment of prescribing standards.

The Handbook was conceptualized in 2005, under the Presidency of Lisa Grossman, J.D., Ph.D. Division 31 has maintained a commitment to increasing diversity within SPTAs and APA. As part of this commitment, we are providing you with this handbook. The primary goal of the Diversity Initiative of the Committee of State Leaders has been to involve more ethnic minority psychologists in membership and leadership positions in SPTAs. The Initiative has continued to grow since 2000, which was when SPTAs were invited to nominate ethnic minority psychologists for funded participation in the State Leadership Conference. Since its inception, the Diversity Initiative has grown in terms of participation of delegates and the inclusion of the initiative within psychological associations. Many of the delegates are now being funded by their own SPTA. In addition, many of the delegates have been elected to office within their SPTA. The 2003-2009 diversity delegates and the diversity subcommittee of the Committee of State Leaders provided updates of the diversity initiatives within their SPTA. Much of the information obtained in this Handbook was obtained from these reports. The initial Handbook was presented to diversity delegates in 2005 and has been on the Division 31 website as a resource to SPTAs and divisions as they begin to develop and expand their initiative.
